  • We investigated the quench characteristics accordance with increase of turns and applied voltage of matrix-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with $1{\times}3$ matrixes. The matrix-type SFCL consists of the trigger part to apply magnetic field and the current-limiting part to limit fault current. The fault current limiting characteristics according to the increase of magnetic field and applied voltage were nearly same. This is because the application of magnetic field has not an affect on total impedance of SFCL. When number of turns of reactor increased, the voltage difference between two superconducting units in the current-limiting part according was decreased. The resistance difference generated in two superconducting units also was decreased. Therefore, we confirmed that the differences of critical behaviors between superconducting units by application of magnetic field were decreased. By this results, we could be decided the optimum number of turns of reactor to apply magnetic field.

  • In this paper, we performed the optimum design of reactors for matrix-type superconducting-fault current limiters (SFCLs), using electromagnetic analysis tools. We decided a optimun position within a reactor for superconducting elements of current-limiting parts and trigger parts from the calculation of magnetic flux internsity for reactor structures. Also we decided effective distance length between two reactors through the analysis of the distribution of magnetic field, according to distance lengths between them. We designed and characterized matrix-type SFCLs, based on our optimum design of a reactor. We confirmed uniform distribution of a fault current, resulted from the improvement of simultaneous quench characteristics within our matrix-type SFCL.

  • In this work, we investigated quench characteristics of matrix-type superconducting fault current limiters (MFCLs) according to the turn number of reactors. The reactors used in MFCLs apply magnetic field to superconducting elements within reactors when fault currents surge into MFCL systems. It makes the fast and simultaneous quenches between superconducting elements. Also reactors decrease the fault power burden of superconducting elements by bypassing the partial fault currents to itself, when quench occurs. These structure proposed in this work can be expected to achieve much more current limiting capacity even though it uses less superconductors compared with other type SFCLs. Three reactors were made by Bakelite. These reactors with the turn number of 190, 380 and 570, had the length of 270 mm and diameter of 80 mm. We reported experimental results, including fault currents, fault voltages and resistance in superconducting elements according to the turn number of reactors. We confirmed that experimental results will be useful in next future plan for the real power grid.

  • In this paper we reported the characteristics of 1 line, 2 lines and 3 lines-to-ground fault of matrix-type SFCLs (MFCLs) and the electromagnetic field distribution of reactors for MFCLs under the same cases of ground faults. To do this, we fabricated MFCLs with 6 reactors for 3 phases. Each reactor had the length of 270 mm and diameter of 80 mm. 6 reactors were made by Bakelite. We reported experimental results, including fault currents, fault voltages and magnetic field distribution according to phase differences between each phase. We confirmed that experimental results will be useful in next future plan for real power grid.

  • It is very important for power stability to suppress the excessive fault current happened frequently in the real power grid The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of the most effective ways to reduce the fault current among the facilities developed so far. In this paper, we have investigated the operating characteristics of the power grid with the SFCL according to three types such as the single, double and triple line-to-ground faults. In addition, we analyzed the consumption power of the superconducting units based on the working data of the SFCL. We confirmed that the fault current could be limited lower than its peak value to 85 percentage in initial fault condition and to 85 percentage after one cycle in the matrix-type SFCL. The consumption powers of the superconducting units were almost equal by reduction of the difference of the critical current between superconducting units element.

  • The matrix-type superconducting fault current limiter (MSFCL) consists of the trigger and current-limiting parts. The trigger part with reactors connected in parallel improves the quenching characteristics by applying the external magnetic field into the superconducting units. The current-limiting part with superconducting units connected in parallel and shunt reactors connected in series limit the fault current when the fault occurs. We developed the integrated reactor with the trigger and the current-limiting parts to apply high external magnetic field into the superconducting units. This was composed of a superconducting unit for the trigger part and two superconducting units for the current-limiting parts. We confirmed that the external magnetic field generated in the MSFCL with an integrated reactor was larger than that of the MSFCL with the separated reactors. So the differences of voltages generated between superconducting units were decreased in the difference according to the increment of the applied voltage. The whole magnitude of the SFCL was reduced because the volume of an integrated reactor could be reduced by one-third than that of the separated reactors. We confirmed that the critical behavior between the superconducting units in the MSFCL with an integrated reactor was more improved than that of the MSFCL with the separated reactors.

  • An advanced superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using $high-T_c$ superconducting (HTS) wire has been developed. The SFCL has a non-inductively wound magnet for reducing loss in normal state. Two types of non-inductively wound magnets, the solenoid type and the pancake type, were designed and manufactured by using Bi-2223 wire in this research. Short-circuit tests of the magnets were performed in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system of 65 K. The magnets are thermally more stable and have a higher critical current in 65 K sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system than in 77 K saturated one. Because the resistivity of matrix at 65 K is lower than the resistivity at 77 K, the magnets generate a small resistance to reduce the fault current when the quench occurs. The magnets could limit the fault current to low current level with such a small resistance. The current limiting characteristic of the magnets was analyzed from the test result. The solenoid type was wound in parallel to make it non-inductive. The pancake type was also connected in parallel to be compared with the solenoid type in the same condition. The solenoid type was found to have a good thermal stability compared with the pancake type. It also had as large resistance as the pancake type to limit the fault current in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system.
