  • Vehicle simulators provide an effective and safe environment for training operators. Many vehicle simulators have been developed but only a few have reached the stage of widely available tools; these tools are usually expensive and run on workstations only We have developed a low-cost, PC-based excavator simulator for training operators. Currently the simulator is dedicated to operating the boom, Em, bucket, and driver's cabin for digging by the action of the operator on two joysticks. This paper presents the implementation of the excavator simulator and some implementation results.

  • This paper describes the design methodology of the operator training simulator for power monitor and control system in the railway system. In power system, the purpose of energy management system was to monitor, control, and analyze the performance of generation and transmission system based on H/W and S/W. Network analysis applications provide a clear picture of power system characteristics using state estimation, power flow and short circuit analysis. In this respect, the operator training system in the railway system should be equipped with the methodology of these systems. First, the proposed database structure in the railway system was introduced. Then the overall structure of operator training system based on railway analysis applications was proposed. Finally, a methodology to verify the performance of the developed applications was described.

  • Operator training simulator, within a training environment designed to understand the principles and behavior of the railway system with respect to operator's entries and predefined scenario, can provide a very strong benefit in facilitating operators' handling undesired operations. This simulator consists of computer system and applications, and the purpose of applications is to generate the power and voltage and analyze the AC substation and DC railway, respectively. This paper describes a novel approach to the new techniques for AC/DC hybrid simulation for the operator training simulator in the railway system. We first propose the structure the database of railway system. Then, topology processing and power flow using a linked-list method based on the proposed database, full or decoupled newton-rapshon methods are presented. Finally, the interface between the analysis for AC substation using a newton-rapshon method and the analysis for DC railway system using a time-interval power flow method is described. We have verified and tested the developed algorithm through the extensive testing for the proposed test system. To demonstrate the validity of the developed algorithm, comparative simulations between the proposed algorithm and PSS/E for the test system were conducted.

  • The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Crew Resource Management (CRM) training program for operators in the Main Control Room (MCR) simulator of APR-1400 Nuclear Power Plant. The experiments were conducted for two different crews of operators performing six different emergency operating scenarios during four-week period. Each crew consisted of the five operators: senior reactor operator, safety technical advisor, reactor operator, turbine operator, and electric operator. All crews (Crew A and B) participated in the training program for the technical knowledge and skills which were required to operate the simulator of the MCR during the first week. To verify the effectiveness of the CRM training program; however, only Crew A was selected to attend the CRM training after the technical knowledge and skills training. The results of the experiments showed that the CRM training program improved the individual attitudes of Crew A significantly. Team skills of Crew A were found to be significantly better than those of Crew B. The CRM training did not have positive effects on enhancing the individual performance of Crew A; however, as compared to that of Crew B. Implication of these findings was discussed further in detail.

  • This paper presents an operator training simulator for power system restoration against massive blackout. The system is designed especially focused on the generality and convenient setting up for initial condition of simulation. The former is accomplished by using power flow calculation methodology, and PSS/E data is used to set up the initial state for easy setting. The proposed simulator consists of three major components-a power flow(PF), a data conversion(CONV), and, a GUI module. The PF module calculates power flow, and then checks over-voltages of buses and overloads of lines. The CONV module composes a Y-Bus array and a database at each restoration action. The initial Y-Bus array is composed from PSS/E data. A user friendly GUI module is developed including a graphic editor and a built-in operation manual. The maximum processing time for one step operation is 15 seconds, which is adequate for training purpose.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed at developing a tractor-driving simulator for the safety training of agricultural tractor operators. Methods: The developed simulator consists of five principal components: mock operator control devices, a data acquisition and processing device, a motion platform, a visual system that displays a computer model of the tractor, a motion platform, and a virtual environment. The control devices of a real tractor cabin were successfully converted into mock operator control devices in which sensors were used for relevant measurements. A 3D computer model of the tractor was also implemented using 3ds Max, tractor dynamics, and the physics of Unity 3D. The visual system consisted of two graphic cards and four monitors for the simultaneous display of the four different sides of a 3D object to the operator. The motion platform was designed with two rotational degrees of freedom to reduce cost, and inverse kinematics was used to calculate the required motor positions and to rotate the platform. The generated virtual environment consisted of roads, traffic signals, buildings, rice paddies, and fields. Results: The effectiveness of the simulator was evaluated by a performance test survey administered to 128 agricultural machinery instructors, 116 of whom considered the simulator as having potential for improving safety training. Conclusions: From the study results, it is concluded that the developed simulator can be effectively used for the safety training of agricultural tractor operators.

  • Aerial working platform is recently used broadly in heavy industry and construction field and also the utilization of it is growing. However, the raise of critical incident caused by unskilled operator is increased gradually. To reduce and prevent such incident, the training for operating is essential. It's not easy to cover the requirements for the training with real platform because of the high price of it, safety and weather condition. This paper proposes a simulator for the training based on virtual reality to give the training safely regardless to the weather condition and the simulator is deliverable in lower price than real one. The simulator proposed in this paper is available to be set according to the level of trainee's skill managing and be also applied for the design of general heavy equipment training simulator.
