  • Eriocaulon sieboldianum (ES) is used in traditional oriental medicine for various medicinal purposes including headache, toothache, and inflammation. However, the anti-cancer effect of the ES is still not fully understood. In the present study, the human leukemia cell line HL-60 was used to characterize the apoptotic effects of ES. ES induced cytotoxicity of HL-60 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. ES induced the generation of reactive oxygen species, and the release of cytochrome c in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, we showed that ES-induced apoptosis was accompanied by activation of caspase-3. Taken together, our results demonstrate that ES possesses anti-cancer activity in HL-60 cells.

  • The policies of oriental medicine, changes of medical systems, development of oriental medical education and research activities of oriental medicine were reviewed in this paper from 1945 to 1995 and several opinions were suggested to relevant government authorities and doctors of oriental and western medicine. The history of oriental medicine had to come a long and winding road since the Political Reform in 1894. However, national effort of oriental medicine people in Korea has kept the oriental medicine as national medicine. In this paper, the right direction of the medical systems for government were suggested together with timely roles of medical doctors of both oriental and western medicine. 1. After excluding other variables which affect in the profit of oriental medicine clinics with multiple regression model, when considering only advantage of treatment for particular kinds of illness, specialized oriental medicine clinics win the more profit of 18.3 percent than general oriental medicine clinics. The specialization of oriental medicine clinics can become one of the positive measures in the situation of enlargement of medical of oriental medicine, falling of oriental medicine price and conflict of western and oriental medicine, etc. The specialization can help western medicine replace with oriental medicine, and level and scientific system of oriental medicine improve.
