  • Polychlorinated biphenyls, (PCBs) are a group of highly toxic chlorinated industrial chemicals used as dielectrics, coolants and lubricants in electrical transformers. This article reviewed the state-of-the-art on technologies for decomposition of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), one of the persistent organic materials (POPs). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of decontaminating PCBs contaminated pollutants using treatment technologies such as chemical dechlorination, photodegradation and biological transformation.

Biodegradation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) within Insulating Oil by Pseudomonas sp. P2 (Pseudomonas sp. P2에 의한 절연류 내의 Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)의 분해)

  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCBs)의 생물학적 처리가 시도되고 있으며, PCBs를 분해할 수 있는 미생물을 이용할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 폐기된 절연유의 생물학적 처리를 위하여 PCBs를 분해하는 균을 분해하였으며, 분해된 균을 이용하여 절연유 내의 Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCBs) 분해를 회분식 실험에서 연구하였다. 대구의 신천으로부터 유일한 탄소원으로 Biphenyl을 포함하고 있는 고체배지에서 PCBs를 분해할 수 있는 Pseudomonas sp. P2 균주를 분해하였다. PCBs의 용해도를 높이기 위해 사용된 유화제 alkyl aryl ethoxylated phosphate가 200 mg/L에서는 Pseudomonas sp. P2 균주의 성장에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 1000 mg/L의 Biphenyl과 PCBs에 Pseudomonas sp. P2를 접종하여 160시간 배양후에 Biphenyl과 PCBs의 분해가 각각 97.5%, 58.0%였다. Biphenyl 1000 mg/L에서 최대성장율($\mu_{max}$)은 0.34 $day^{-1}$, 0.26 였다. 따라서 염소가 결합되지 않은 Biphenyl는 염소가 결합된 PCBs보다 분해가 빠르게 진행되었다. 또한 Pseudomonas sp. P2는 Biphenyl과 PCBs의 분해로 부터 유도된 황색의 분해대사산물을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 Pseudomonas sp. P2 균주가 절연유 내의 PCBs를 분해할 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다.

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are anthropogenic contaminants found globally in water, ice, soil, air and sediment. Modern analytical techniques allow us to determine these chemicals in environmental matrices at parts per trillion levels or lower. Environmental forensic on PCBs opens up new avenues of investigation such as transport and fate of water masses in oceans, sedimentation, onset of primary production, migration of marine mammals, their population distribution and pharmacokinetics of drugs inside organisms. By virtue of persistence, bioaccumulation, bioconcentration and structure-activity relationship PCBs emerge as unconventional chemical tracers of new sort.

  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) interfere with gas chromatographic analysis of multiple organochlorine pesticide residues. In the present work, existing Florisil column chromatographic method has been modified as to improve separation of organochlorine pesticides and their metabolites from PCBs. It was amply demonstrated that separation of $\alpha-BHC,\; \gamma-BHC$ Heptachlor epoxide Dieldrin, p.p-DDD, p.p'-DDT from PCBs such as Aroclor 1254 is complete and recovery of the pesticides is found quantitative. Aldrin and Heptachlor in the Aroclor eluant can be separately analyzed by comparison of the chromatographic pattern of standard Aroclor 1254 with that of Aroclor 1254 a dmixed with the two pesticides. The Florsil column technique can be utilized in the routine evaluation of the organochlorine pesticide residues by gas chromatography.

  • The bacterial strain P2 degrading polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was isolated from the soil around the Shinchun stream in Taegu after enrichment culture in a media containing biphenyl as the sole carbon source. The isolate was identified as a strain of Pseudomonas sp. based on its morphological and physiological characteristics. The optimal conditions of initial pH of media and temperature for growth were 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Degradation of biphenyl and PCBs was confirmed by GC during the culture of Pseudomonas sp. P2 in a media containing them at a concentration of 500 mg/I. It was observed that Pseudomonas sp. P2 could degrade 97.0$%$ of biphenyl and 60.0$%$ of PCBs after 160 h culture.

  • The effects of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on the reproduction of the oily bitterling, Acheilognathus koreensis were investigated using histological methods. The experimental fishes were exposed to 0. 3.4, 9.3 and 25.8 ${\mu}g\; L^{-1}$ PCBs fey 8 weeks. Dead fishes and abnormal behavior were not observed in control and PCBs exposure group. In compared with control group, PCBs exposure fishes showed differences of gonadal development, gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (BSI), nuptial color index (NCI) and ovipositor length index (OLI). These results showed that PCBs could disrupt reproductive process in the fish.

  • To assess present status of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination in Kyeonggi Bay, Namyang Bay, and Lake Shihwa, 63 sediment samples were analyzed and applied to equilibrium partitioning approach. Sediment quality criteria (SQC) for exposure to Kanechlor mixture (KC-mix) was calculated as a value of 16 ${\mu}$g/g-organic carbon (OC). Two sites (Sites Kl8 and Kl9) within Incheon North Harbor (INH) with total PCBs concentrations 48 and 38 ${\mu}$g/g-OC, respectively, exceeded SQC, indicating a potential of adverse biological effects. The advantage and disadvantage of equilibrium partitioning approach has been discussed.
