  • In order to achieve an oriental lacquer (OL) film with a thick consistency, UV-curable silicone acrylate (SA) was added to OL by a dual curing process. The addition of 5 wt% UV-curable SA to the OL fomulation enabled the preparation via a single drying step of a $77{\mu}m-thick$ film exhibiting excellent surface properties. FTIR-ATR was used to investigate the effect of UV-curable SA on the behavior of film formation during curing, and the relaxation behavior of the produced films was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy. Dielectric properties were measured in the frequency range $10^{-2}-10^5\;Hz$ at various temperatures between -100 and $200^{\circ}C$. The results demonstrated that OL modified by UV-curable SA has a higher glass transition temperature and stronger secondary relaxation at a lower temperature than the conventional OL system. The OL film modified with UV-curable SA was presumed to be harder at the surface and tougher than conventional OL film.

  • An issue of major concern in the utilization of laminated composites based epoxy resin is associated with the occurrence of delaminations or interlaminar cracks, which may be related to manufacturing defects or are induced in service by low-velocity impacts. A strong interfacial filament/brittle epoxy resin bonding can, however, be combined with the high fracture toughness of weak interfacial bonding, when the filaments are arranged to have alternate sections of shear stress. To improve this drawback of the epoxy resin, UV-thermal dual curable resin were developed. This paper presents UV-thermal dual curable resin which were prepared using epoxy acrylate oligomer, photoinitiators, a thermal-curing agent and thermoset epoxy resin. The UV curing behaviors and characteristics of UV-thermal dual curable epoxy resin were investigated using Photo-DSC, DMA and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of UV-thermal dual curable epoxy resin impregnated CF prepreg by UV curable resin content were measured with Tensile, Flextural, ILSS and Sharpy impact test. The obtained results showed that UV curable resin content improves the epoxy toughness.

  • UV-Curable hybrid coatings were synthesized to improve the surface properties of plastic film. Organic-inorganic coating solutions were prepared by the sol-gel method using urethane-acrylate oligomer, acrylate monomer, photo initiator and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPTMS) was used as a silane coupling agent to improve chemical interaction between inorganic phases and UV curable acrylate. In this study, the surface hardness and adhesive properties were improved with the use of inorganic component. The experimental results showed that UV-Curable hybrid films containing aliphatic urethane oligomer, hexanedioldiacrylate, trimethylolpropanetriacrylate, hydroxy dimethyl acetophenone exhibited good surface properties. Also, the optimum curing conditions were investigated.

  • UV-curable 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) based urethane acrylate prepolymers for secondary optical fiber coating were prepared from the two isocyanates, and two diols, poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol (PTMG, MW=650) and hexane diol (HD), and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) with dibutyl tin dilaurate as a catalyst. UV-curable coating materials were formulated from the prepolymer and five different diluents and 1-hydroxy cyclohexyl phenyl ketone (Irgacure 184) as a photoinitiator. The effects of chemical structure on the refractive index of W-curable coating materials and the mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of W-cured films were studied. The refractive index of viscose UV-curable coating material increased with increasing hard segment component (HD) content. The TDI based system has higher refractive index than that of IPDI based system at the same composition. As the content of HD increased, the Young's modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and dynamic storage modulus of UV-cured films of both TDI and IPDI based systems increased, however, the elongation at break decreased. The glass transition temperature of leV-cured films of both TDI and IPDI based systems increased as the content of HD increased.

  • Electron beam (EB) and ultraviolet (UV) curable monomers (AF-1 with mono functionality and AF-2 with tetra functionality) containing hydroxy and acrylate group for anti-fogging coating were synthesized and applied to EB and UV-curable coating systems. The synthesized reactive AF-1 and AF-2 monomers were first formulated into UV-curable system and the optimization of film properties for anti-fogging coating was investigated. The 5:17.5 ratio for AF-1 and AF-2 was found to be the best optimized formulation for anti-fogging coating without destroying the other essential properties such as hardness, solvent resistance, and adhesion. The optimized formulation was applied to the EB-curable system, and EB and UV-curable systems were compared. The results demonstrated that both EB and UV-cured films coated on PC sheet showed excellent anti-fogging properties; however, the EB-cured film exhibited better hardness, adhesion, and water repellent properties than the UV-cured film.

  • In this study, acrylic resin-based ultraviolet curable oligomers were synthesized for a dual-crosslinking system applicable to thermosetting pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). In addition, dual-curable PSA tapes were prepared by blending thermoset PSAs and UV curable oligomers. UV curable oligomers were synthesized using acrylate monomers, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and propylene imine (PI). Acrylate monomers were added at a constant rate to IPDI for selective bonding to a single isocyanate group of IPDI, and a polymerization inhibitor was added to prevent polymerization. Additionally, the binding sites that were bonded to the adhesive backbone were formed by adding PI at a constant rate, after solvent addition. The synthesized UV oligomers were confirmed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and 1H NMR, and then the adhesive properties of the PSA tapes prepared by blending thermoset PSAs and UV curable oligomers were measured.

  • A series of UV-curable powder coatings with different contents of photoinitiator (0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%) were formulated and measured gel content, tensile strength of cured film. Heat-sensitive substrates such as MDF, plywood and PVC were coated UV-curable powder and cured coatings were measured physical properties by pendulum hardness tester, glossmeter, pull-off adhesion tester. With increasing photoinitiator content, adhesion force between coating and substrate decreased because of crosslinking density increasing. The results of pendulum hardness was not significantly changed but gloss was changed according to different substrates. Adhesion of UV-curable coatings was enough to apply for heat-sensitive substrates. From these results, we concluded that contents of photoinitiator was a effective factor in UV-curable powder coatings. UV-curable coatings was a portential candidate for heat-sensitive substrates.

  • This study investigated the material properties of UV-curable Resin in order to identify stable materials for use in the restoration of glass cultural properties. Tested samples were based on acrylic UV-curable Resin (SECURE CP-7321®), to which urethane UV-curable Resin (FLGPCL04 Clear®) was added in 10% increments to produce eleven samples. The results showed that all eleven samples had similar properties in terms of refractive index, density, adhesive strength, and anti-yellowing. But the surface hardness and compressive strength were optimal and effective for maintaining the shape of artifacts after restoration treatment when the proportion of urethane resin was in the range of 10-20%. Based on these findings, the mixing sample [acrylic UV-curable Resin(9) : urethane UV-curable Resin(1)] was applied in the conservation treatment of a glass cultural propertie (Hwangbuk 519) excavated from the North Mound of Hwangnamdaechong, Tomb in Gyeongju.
