  • The characteristics of waveguide, electrode and packaging fabricated for acousto-optic tunable filters(AOTF) used for optical communications were analyzed. A $Ti:LiNbO_3$in-diffusing method was employed for the formation of the optical waveguide with a dimension of width $8{\mu}m$, length $30000-50000{\mu}m$ and varying the thickness. The diffusion was carried at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours to pattern the optical waveguide. The resulted waveguide exhibited a single mode at 1550nm optical wavelength. The width of IDT, with 10 SAM periods, was $5000{\mu}m$ . Impedances of the electrodes deposited with Au were analyzed using a network analyzer; $48.1\Omega$ at the center frequency of 193MHz for electrode thickness of $1500{\AA}$ and $50.7\Omega$ at the center frequency of 192MHz for $1600\AA$. And the characteristics of packaged AOTF was analyzed. When the electrical frequency 177.1MHz was applied to the device, the mode conversion efficiency was measured as 63% at the optical wavelength 1515nm.

The optical waveguide dimensions that is consists of Mach-zehnder interferometric and single channel waveguide based on the single-mode conditions in LiNbO$_3$ device was utilized and fabricated by wet etching technique. This Polymer material for core layer is SU-8/5O(Microchem.) and its refractive index from prism couping method was measured about 1.59 thickness about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at wavelength 0.6328${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the results, this work can show the possibility of fabricating a flexible optical waveguide in the field of integrated optics.

  • This paper demonstrates the development of optical temperature sensor based on the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include design and fabrication of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating, investigation of the grating reflection characteristics, and temperature measurement capabilities. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ~0.2nm and ~7%, respectively, at a wavelength of ~1552nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change of the optical sensor is found to be slightly non-linear over ~20$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Theoretical models for the grating response of the sensor based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • In this paper, we developed a 94 GHz waveguide VCO(voltage controlled oscillator) using a GaAs-based Gunn diode and a varactor diode. The cavity is designed for fundamental mode at 47 GHz and operated at second harmonic of 94 GHz. Bias posts for diodes operate as LPF(low pass filter) and resonator. The fabricated waveguide VCO achieves an oscillation bandwidth of 760 MHz. Output power is from 12.61 to 15.26 dBm and phase noise is -101.13 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency from the carrier.

  • The polarization characteristics of ultracompact polarization-insensitive directional coupler (PIDC) based on double sandwiched rib-type waveguide are explored in detail by using longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). To obtain the polarization-insensitive condition of ultracompact directional coupler, the coupling length and coupling efficiency as functions of the refractive index and thickness of sandwiched rib-type waveguide are analyzed for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes. The numerical results show that the ultracompact polarization-insensitive coupler with hundreds of micrometer scales is realized by properly choosing structural and material parameters of double sandwiched layers. Furthermore, the influence of fundamental mode profile, which is distributed in lateral waveguide of coupler, on the coupler performance has been investigated.

  • Q-switched Waveguide $CO_{2}$ laser using polygon mirror were constructed and their output characteristics were measured. Waveguide was made of the beryllium oxide tube of inner diameter of 2 mm, outer diameter of 20 mm, and length of 200 mm. A flat ZnSe output coupler of 80% reflectivity was placed on the 9 mm distance from the end of the waveguide. Convex lens was used to reduce the coupling loss between the polygon mirror and the waveguide. The polygon mirror was located behind of convex lens. With this condition, continuous output of the laser were measured as 1.2 W. In the Q-switched mode. pulse width 120 ns were measured with rotational speed 7,559 RPM. and peak power of up to 250 W. 250 W.

  • In this article, a 20 kHz ultrasonic waveguide for nano-surface treatment was designed and manufactured. When designing the system, finite element analysis with ANSYS software was performed to find optimal dimensions of the waveguide, which can raise energy efficiency. Consequently an anti-resonance frequency of an Al waveguide with a piezoelectric actuator was 20 kHz, which predicted the experimentally obtained value of 18 kHz well. For the assessment of the performance, Steel Use Stainless (SUS) 304 and chromium molybdenum steel (SCM) 435 specimens were tested. Cross-sectional microscopies of SUS304 were taken and they showed that the treated thickness was $30{\mu}m$. Additionally, hardness tests of SCM435 were done and the hardness before the process was 14.0 Rockwell Hardness-C scale (HRC) and after the process was 20.5 HRC, respectively, which means 46% increase. Considering these results, the developed ultrasonic system is thought to be effective in the nano-surface treatment process.

  • Based on the polarization selectivity of fiber-to-planar waveguide coupler, a novel fiber optic polarizer has been designed and fabricated. The large structural birefringence of a metal-clad planar waveguide enables the polarizer to have wide operating wavelength range. The polymer and gold were used for the guiding layer and cladding layer of the planar waveguide, respectively. The experimental results showed that either TE or TM polarized lightwave could be created by adjusting the thickness of planar waveguide. Operating wavelegth range satisfying more than 16㏈ polarization extinction ratio was 130nm. The average insertion loss of fabricated devices was order of 0.5㏈.

  • In this paper, we design and analyze a Ka-band microstrip line to rectangular waveguide transition using the expanding-cell FDTD method. The transition under investigation consists of a ridged waveguide, microstrip line, and $\lambda$/4 Chebyshev impedance transformer. To improve the accuracyand efficiency, the expanding-cell FDTD method is applied to analyze the characteristics of a ridged waveguide impedance transformer. To verify the accuracy of the expanding-cell FDTD method, S parameters of the analyzed transition are compared with those of experimental data. The efficiency of the present approach is verified by comparing the computational time for expanding-cell and that for fine cell. The relation between the number of step and operation bandwidth is analyzed by comparing the characteristics of four and three step Chebyshev waveguide impedance transformer.

  • The laser direct writing method using a UV Argon-ion laser is studied for fabrication of waveguide. The laser direct writing system is constructed with a vision camera, a xy-stage, a motion controller and the delivery components of a laser beam. The UV Argon-ion laser has wavelength range of $333.6\~363.8$ nm. A photo-active UV curable polymer for a planar light-wave circuit(PLC) of single mode is used. This polymer is irradiated by Argon-ion laser and developed by a solvent after a post-baking. The optimum laser direct writing condition is obtained experimentally by changing various process parameters such as laser power, writing speed and focal length. The propagation and coupling loss of a optical waveguide was measured as 1dB/cm and 0.6dB/cm, respectively. Also, the minimum width of waveguide of $100{\mu}m$(ZPLW-207) is obtained. Finally, the waveguides of line, bend and branch type are successfully fabricated.
