  • This is the evaluation report of clinical competence of undergraduate medical students in Plastic Surgery field using OSCE(Objective Structured Clinical Examination) executed in three years. OSCE comprises of assessment of subject, choice of clinical stations sampling, identification of components of clinical competence to be evaluated, the level of performance required, development of specification table, editing of OSCE presentation page and assessment of practicability and results exploitation. About fifty students were examined annually. Seven station stimuli with simulated patient participation were carried out. The mean OSCE score was $82.3{\pm}6.19$. The reliability of the total station was 0.72. The examination shows a positive response to the OSCE. Our experience shows OSCE's feasibility for Plastic Surgery during the initial course of education. Referring to our experiences, the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KPRS) applied the OSCE test for Korean Plastic Surgery Board Certification

Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 10.0. Results: Among the subjects, 122(51.9%) had performed a health examination in the past, and 113(48.1%) had not. Variables that have a significant influence on getting a health examination were: previous disease experience, perceived barrier and perceived seriousness. Those who did not have previous disease experience(2.6 times) and whose perceived seriousness was high(1.1 times) were more likely to have a health examination, and those with perceived barrier high(0.9 times) were less likely. Conclusion: Therefore, to increase the rate of health examinations, it is necessary to advertise the importance of health examinations particularly for the people who had disease experience and the seriousness of target diseases; and furthermore, to remove barriers of a health examination.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the 6-year clinical pharmacy curriculum in Korea among 35 schools of pharmacy and to compare the pharmacy practice experience curriculum with the U.S. Methods: Data on the 6-year clinical pharmacy curriculum was collected and analyzed from 35 schools of pharmacy in Korea. Data were collected from each school's website, or through professors in clinical pharmacy or the administrative office, when not available online. Guidance for U.S. clinical pharmacy curriculum was referenced from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Accreditation Standards and Guidelines. Results: Pharmacotherapy was the only course that was offered in every school of pharmacy with average of $11.5{\pm}2.8$ credit hours offered. Only six subjects were offered in more than half of the schools. Average pharmacy practice experience credit hours in Korea were $1.8{\pm}0.6$, $7.8{\pm}1.5$, $4.9{\pm}1.2$, $3.5{\pm}1.1$, $11.8{\pm}1.2$ in introductory, hospital, community, pharmaceutical industry and administration, and intensified pharmacy practice experience, respectively. While the U.S. required introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) to be conducted in the real pharmacy setting, the IPPE in Korea was conducted as an in-class simulation. The total required hours of IPPEs and APPEs were 1400 hours in Korea and 1740 (300+1440) hours in the U.S. Conclusion: Clinical pharmacy curriculum in Korea is offered through a variety of courses and the pharmacy practice experience curriculum has been adopted by every school of pharmacy. A guidance outlining the major required contents of clinical pharmacy curriculum could help standardize and advance the clinical pharmacy education in Korea.

  • Transcranial Doppler (TCD) was introduced in 1982 to assess intracranial arteries noninvasively, since when it has been widely used to assess and monitor cerebrovascular hemodynamics. The clinical applications of TCD are broadening to include other fields that require monitoring of the cerebral blood flow. TCD has fewer temporal and spatial restrictions than other methods, can be performed on less-compliant patients, and causes no harm to the body. However, its reliance on high levels of examiner skill and experience, as well as a lack of standardized scanning protocols are obstacles that still need to be overcome. In this report we review TCD examination techniques and interpret their findings for several conditions.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical competence of medical student using short case test items. Development of short case test items with definition of an assessment of subject, choice of clinical stations sampling, identification of components of clinical competence to be evaluated, and assessment of practicability and results exploitation. For the last three years 28, 48 and 30 topics were developed annually. Among them 20, 23 and 23 topics were selected. About 50 students were examined annually. The mean score was 72.7, 57.1, 64.3 respectively. The mean preparation time of the students for the examination was 9.8 hours. About 60% of the students prepared the test in small group activity. Our experience suggests that short case test items be feasible for evaluation of student learning in Plastic Surgery. This method should be considered as a useful tool to assess medical student's competence or even an examination for board certification.

  • The objective of this study was to identify bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) awareness and experience level of patients by medical doctors who prescribes bisphosphonate being used, analyze dental examination referral reality and to utilize its result as basic education data for early diagnosis of BRONJ and its prevention. The study was carried out through a self-administered questionnaire distributed among a sample 192 residents and specialists. They belonged to family medicine, internal medicine and orthopedics of 6 tertiary medical centers located in Seoul. The survey consisted of 22 questions; general characteristics, bisphosphonate therapy, awareness of BRONJ, implementation level of dental examination referral. Among 192 medical doctorss, 78.1% (n=150) showed awareness of BRONJ. Only 8.9% (n=17) had correct response in all 5 BRONJ knowledge questions. Dental examination referral by medical doctors was implemented in below 30% of the total patients. At the time of bisphosphonate administration, specialist of oncology most highly recognized necessity of dental examination referral and it was represented in the order of endocrinology, rheumatology, family medicine, orthopedics specialists. As recognition of medical doctors for BRONJ and implementation level of dental referral were represented to be low, it is considered that enhancement of BRONJ recognition for medical doctors and development of high accessible education program for increasing implementation rate of dental examination referral would be required.

  • tisue disease of dog and cat, resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in man. EDS is characterizedby loose, hyperextensible and, fragile skin, it is attributed to mutations in connective tisue gene. Thesemutations cause defects in type I or II collagen synthesis and as a result lack of strength or elasticityto skin, joint, ligament and vessels. EDS-affected animals often experience subcutaneous hematomas thathave long bleeding times. The 4-years old male Yorkshire terrier was evaluated because of subcutaneoushematoma after stifle surgery. Clinical examination revealed a thin and hyperextensible skin and jointlaxity. The degree of skin extensibility index was 23.4%, marked skin stretchy. Clinical diagnosis wasconfirmed by histophathological examination of a skin biopsy revealing reduced packing density ofcollagen fiber of skin.
