  • Copying of designs has been condoned in the fashion industry. However, the industry argues that whether fashion design should be protected by law and what constitute design copying in fashion. This study has been performed by in-dept interviews with employees in the fashion industry. The study finds that respondents perceived copying of design to be some extent beneficial to the industry. While, they also observed that it has a negative effect on the industry due to indiscriminate copying. • This study suggests the way of revitalization of strategic specialized industry from the perspective of design business model. In order to revitalize the regional strategic specialized industry, it is necessary to overcome traditional production-based industry structure. For the industry's side, companies should convert their traditional production-based business perspective into market-oriented or design-oriented one. For the designer's side, they need to lead the design-centered industry structure by suggesting active design sources to industries escaping from passive design development perspective. Namely, the revitalization of strategic specialized industry can be peformed by design-based and market-oriented business execution. The formation of market-oriented industry can be accomplished by designers who do their design development works with design-business perspective and play an active role in the industry system. For the suggestion of concept mentioned above, this study conceptualized the meaning of design business, and applied the concept of it to the case study for bamboo industry of Damyang province. The case study suggests the possibility that designers are able to create higher profit through various sources such as sales royalty, production royalty etc by playing an active role for design development, industry selection, business system establishment and so on. In addition, the study implies that industries can increase the possibility of business success through design-based business execution mentioned above.

  • This study discuses the strategies for the reestabisgment of Korean textile industry by emphasizing the area of textile design which plays an important role in developing textile materials. The textile industry in Korea has been in stagnancy for a long period of time and appears to find no answer to the problem. The big part of the problem is that the industry itself does not realize the importance of textile design and its management does not understand its critical role in contributing the growth of the industry. To develop textile design, first, we need to foster textile designers who have the creativity, an understanding of international trend and a mind f management. This can be achieved through an education system with a close tie to the textile industry. Second, we need to globalize our textile design in three aspects : design, technology and marketing. A balanced and harmonized progression of these three aspects will guarantee a successful globalization of textile design. This progression, however, demands creativity, identity, and interaction on the design side, digital and networking on the technology side, and culture marketing, brand value, and global agent networking on the marketing side.

  • Although design industry belongs to one of the creative industries and contributes significantly to urban cultural economy based on its cluster formation, researches on design industry are rarely made explicit from the perspective of creative industry cluster. After reviewing the life cycle of design industry clusters in Euljiro and Hongdae Area in Seoul, this study compares these two clusters with respect of diverse dimensions of creative industry cluster such as agglomeration economy, spin-off activities and institutional environments. Research methodology includes the analysis of ?Seoul Business Statistics? and the in-depth interviews with 14 professional designers. The result shows that design industry cluster in Euljiro is close to the traditional industry cluster mainly dependent on printing industry with very limited impact on urban economy, while Hongdae Area develops creative industry cluster by virtue of university spin-offs, art markets, hybrid cultural consumption spaces and the active participation of designers contributing to urban economy in diverse ways. This comparative analysis highlights the importance of various environmental components to encourage creative activities in developing the creative industry cluster.
