We also examined exports and imports trends about China, USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan in Korea's major trading nation. The purpose of this study is to examine how much Korea's exports and imports of Vietnam have increased and to compare how much it has risen compared to other major countries. To this end, we used imports and exports data for Korea, China, USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan using data from January 2000 to February 2018 for 218 months. During the past 218 months, Korea's exports to Vietnam have increased rapidly, leading to Korea's exports to the world. Korea's exports to Vietnam showed a 10 times increase rate compared to Korea's exports to the world. Vietnam has grown to be an important export country in Korea.

Even in the case of China's exports, US short-term interest rate has a significant positive effect. However, in the case of China's imports, in contrast to exports, US short-term interest rate do not have a significant effects and US real effective exchange rate has a significant positive effect. On the other hand, China's policy interest rate has a negative impact on China's imports and not statistically significant, but it has a significant positive effect on China's exports.

  • The substitution of Electronic Commerce(EC) for the traditional transactions triggers the changes of the industry structures and promotes the cost reductions of the firms in the areas of distributions and other administrative operations associated with purchase via EC. Our study clarifies the changes of the environments attributable to EC which are faced inter-and-externally by firms and try to exhibit the trend of EC market growth through such descriptions. Regardless of the rapid spread of EC, recent studies do not show appropriately its impact on the relevant industries and our domestic economy. Therefore, our study focuses on the forecasting of the impacts of EC on the domestic productions and imports. To this end, we develop an analytic framework using the existing data in Input/Output Analysis and the estimations of the EC market growth in the future. We, finally, identify the industrial sectors whose productions and imports are estimated to be accelerated by the extension of EC and forecast the whole effects of EC on domestic productions and imports.

  • The United States is the world's leading importer of frozen processed groundfish products, with over two thirds of total world imports. Over 90% of the U.S. groundfish demand is met by inports, while about 2 million mt of groundfish are taken from U, S. waters by joint-venture and foreign fleets. The objective of this paper is to provide descriptive information concerning the U.S. groundfish market and the potential for groundfish resources off Alaska to become a major source of supply to this market. The size of the U.S. market, U.S. imports, trade policies, and catch from U.S, waters are discussed, and a comparison is made between the potential domestic catch of groundfish off Alaska and current U.S. groundfish consumption. The total optimum yield of 2.3 million mt for flounders, cod, and pollock is about four times the round weight equivalent of U.S. imports of these species in 1984.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the quantitative loss of the consumer surplus due to the tariffs on clothing imports during the WTO starting periods. For 1984-1996, the import price elasticity of the clothing was estimated from the regression of pet capita clothing imports on Per capita GNP, import price index and domestic producer price index. Then the quantitative losses of the consumer surplus in clothing were obtained from the simplified formula for 1990-1995. In spite of the decrease in textiles St clothing tariff rates, consumer costs were increasing, which was caused by the tremendous increase in clothing imports during the same period. The loss of the consumer surplus was 7131 billion wonts in 1995, which accounted for 6.4% of the total clothing expenditure.

  • This study aims to present the effects of the introduction of the Compliance Program in Korea on real trade and its implication by empirical analysis. First, through regression analysis based on the data of the amount of permitted export by CP items (HSK10 units) during the period of 2010-2016 in Korea, it is revealed that the increase in export license of CP enterprises has a relatively greater effect on the increase in total imports by item. Second, since the introduction of the rating system under the optional CP in 2014, the increase in export licenses of CP companies has had a greater impact on the total export growth by items than before. Also, it is analyzed that the increase of export permission of CP companies has a relatively less effect on the increase of total imports by item than that of total exports. The results of this empirical analysis show that CP has a positive effect on exports and imports, but it needs to be supplemented in terms of efficiency.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of China's trade relationships with and dependency on the countries participating in the Belt and Road initiative and to present some implications. This study collected annual total imports, exports, and GDP data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 198 countries and the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) on 221 countries from 1995 to 2015. China's imports and exports have expanded considerably from the mid-1990s to the present, and China's dependence on imports and exports with the US and Japan has declined, while its dependence on the Middle East, South Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia has increased. China has a very high level of dependence on imports from and exports to the countries participating in the Belt and Road initiative, and as the Belt and Road project progresses, the mutual trade dependency between China and the other participating countries is expected to strengthen and expand.

  • This paper provides empirical evidence on the impact of increasing import penetration on the job stability of Korean workers. The main results are as follows. First, import penetration negatively affects job stability. If an industry's ratio of imports to total supply increases by 1 percentage point, the turnover probability of workers in that industry increases by 4.5 percentage points. Second, the effect of trade liberalization is not symmetric between imports and exports. Unlike the case of imports, an industry's ratio of exports to output does not have a significant effect on job stability. Third, the impact of import penetration is not uniform across different types of workers. The negative impact is greater for workers in small firms, less educated workers, and those not protected by labor unions.
