Effects of surface modification with hydroxyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane on the corrosion protection of polyurethane coating

  • Polyurethane coating was designed to give a hydrophobic property on its surface by modifying it with hydroxyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane and then effects of surface hydrophobic tendency, water transport behavior and hence corrosion protectiveness of the modified polyurethane coating were examined using FT-IR/ATR spectroscopy, contact angle measurement and electrochemical impedance test. As results, the surface of polyurethane coating was changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic property due primarily to a phase separation tendency between polyurethane and modifier by the modification. The phase separation tendency is more appreciable when modified by polydimethylsiloxane with higher content. Water transport behavior of the modified polyurethane coating decreased more in that with higher hydrophobic surface property. The decrease in the impedance modulus ${\mid}Z{\mid}$ at low frequency region in immersion test for polyurethane coatings was associated with the water transport behavior and surface hydrophobic properties of modified polyurethane coatings. The corrosion protectiveness of the modified polyurethane coated carbon steel generally increased with an increase in the modifier content, confirming that corrosion protectiveness of the modified polyurethane coating is well agreed with its water transport behavior.

  • Dyeing and fastness properties of acid dyeable polyurethane have been compared with those of regular polyurethane. The Exhaustion and color strength on acid dyeable polyurethane was relatively better than regular polyurethane at heavy depth dyeing. The washing fastness properties of acid dyes on acid dyeable polyurethane were similar to those of regular polyurethane.

  • Silylated waterborne polyurethane was synthesized by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymer, prepared from isophrone diisocyanate, poly(tetramethylene glycol) and dimethylol propionic acid, with aminopropyl triethoxysilane. Subsequently, it was mixed with colloidal silica to prepare silylated waterborne polyurethane/silica nanocomposites. The average sizes of nanocomposite particles, measured by dynamic light scattering, showed almost the same value, irrespective of increasing silica content. However, the prepared nanocomposites showed better thermal stability than pure waterborne polyurethane.

  • As a coating material for loudspeaker dampers, resilient polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins were synthesized to replace conventional phenol resin and examined the physical properties, which are not only environmentally friendly but also not harmful to human. Five types of polyurethane resins were synthesized in the step-shot method using methylene diisocyanate, three polyols such as poly tetramethylene ether glycol(PTMEG, MW:2000), poly(1,4-buthylene adipate(PBAP, MW:2000), and poly carbonatediol(PCD, MW:2000), and three chain extenders such as ethylene glycol(EG), neopentyl glycol(NPG), and 1,4-buthandiol(1,4-BD). The five types of synthesized polyurethane resins and commercially available bisphenol A type epoxy resin were blended in weight ratios of 90:10, 70:30, and 50:50 to synthesize 15 types of polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins. Among the polyurethane resins, the one that was synthesized using PCD and 1,4-BD showed excellent tensile strength, 100% modulus, low extension, and relatively high viscosity. Polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins with higher epoxy resin contents showed better thermal properties and water resistance while those with higher polyurethane contents showed higher flexibility. The polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resin made by blending the polyurethane based on PCD and 1,4-BD with a bisphenol A type epoxy resin in a weight ratio of 70:30 was identified to be the most suitable to be used in speaker dampers.

  • Waterborne polyurethane as a new polymer electrolyte was synthesized by using relatively hydrophilic polyols. The morphology of polyurethane was changed as it was dispersed in water. In contrast to polyurethane ionomer, waterborne polyurethane did not form an ionic cluster but produced a binary system composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. In the colloidal system, the former and the latter existed at outward and inward, respectively. Waterborne polyurethane was prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) /poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) copolymer, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), ethylene diamine as a chain extender, and three ionization agents, 1,3-propane sultone, sodium hydride and lithium hydroxide. PEG/PPG copolymer was used for suppressing the crystallinity of PEG and N-H bond was ionized for increasing the electrochemical stability of polyurethane. Low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol dimethyl ether) (PEGDME) were used as plasticizers. DSC, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR of the waterborne polyurethane were measured. Also, the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes based on waterborne polyurethane and various concentrations of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) or PEGDME were measured by AC impedance.

Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane Foam Prepared from Prepolymer with Resin Premix (Prepolymer와 Resin Premix로 부터 제조된 Polyurethane Foam의 기계적 성질)

  • Polyester type polyurethane foam has low hydrolysis resistance. It was overcome with addition of acrylic polyol by quasi prepolymer method. Tensile strength and hardness of polyurethane foam contained acrylic polyol was increased with increasing of acrylic polyol contents. But split tear strength and tear strength was slightly changed. Hydrolysis resistance of polyurethane foam was measured by loss % of tensile strength. It was improved with increasing of acrylic polyol contents from 25.5g to 102g.

  • Polyurethane(PU) was mixtured by the treatment with flame retardants such as Tri(chloroisopropyl) phosphate(TCPP), Triethyl phosphate(TEP) and Trimethyl phosphate(TMP) at about $90^{\circ}C$. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced using the mixured products as flame retardants. The mechanical property and flammability of rigid polyurethane was investigated. The mixtured polyurethane shows reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. Mechanical strength of mixtured polyurethane also shows as high as that of virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the mixtured polyurethane foams, heat release rate(HRR) of the foam was measured by cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of mixtured PU shows uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

  • For the purpose of development of polyurethane sealing material, polyurethane resins reinforced with CuO were prepared from polyol and MOAC(4,4'-Methylenebis(2-chlorobenzeneamine)). And the effects of compositions on the mechanical properties of the reinforced polyurethane resin were experimentally examined. The polyurethane resin got to be thermally decomposed at $260^{\circ}C$ and completely carbonized around $500^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the polyurethane resin increased with the content of MOCA. CuO was uniformly dispersed in the polyurethane resin by 1 minute's ultrasonic radiation. Tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the polyurethane resin reinforced with CuO increased with the content of CuO. Tensile strength and hardness of the reinforced polyurethane resin increased with particle size of the CuO, but elongation decreased. CuO showed higher tensile strength and hardness than any other additives, and lowest elongation.

  • It is possible to shorten developing process by making model using polyurethane foam in the area of automobile development process, etc. However, this skill is too difficult to be of practical use because machining is not easy due to characteristic of polyurethane foam. Domestic and foreign automobile company use clay, polyurethane foam. etc,, those are easy to handle and to make model after completing design sketch. But these materials is difficult to the machined and be worked by humans hand, There are so many difficult problem for machining by making model using polyurethane foam since cutting of elastic body like polyurethan foam has never been studied. Therefore, in this study, it is investigated to measured cutting force that is generated in case of polyurethane foam machining, and to make systematize tool compensation of polyurethane foam cutting work on automobile model by modification of tool offset method on existing steel.

  • In this study, We were studied on the properties of polyurethane elastomer containing the polyol, chain extender and isocyanate in polyurethane elastomer. Polyurethane elastomer had the best properties with poly(tetramethylene) glycol for in-line skate wheel. With more incorporation of chain extender content in polyurethane elastomer, tensile strength and hardness increased and elongation decreased. And then properties of polyurethane elastomer with the bulky type isocyanate had better than the flexible type isocyanate.
