  • Recently, the development of a new class of anti-fouling paint resin which has excellent anti-fouling performance and no persistence in the marine ecology is necessary. In this study, we first polymerized polyurethanes (PUs) as the other type of matrix which have carboxylic acid groups by using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and 2,2'-bis(hydroxyl methyl)-propionic acid (DMPA). And next, we synthesized final resins having quaternary ammonium salts on pendant acid groups of PUs. After synthesis, the physical self-polishing property of resin by the measurement of reduced thickness in sea water was tested. The mechanical property of antifouling paint resin was good when the molecular weight of PEG was 600 or less. It was confirmed that the adhesion of PU resin was deteriorated when the content of quaternary ammonium salt was incorporated over specific value.

  • Quaternary ammonium salt terminated silane was prepared from aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane with methyliodide and ionized 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane $(Li^+TCNQ^-)$ was prepared from TCNQ with methyliodide and lithium iodide. Quaternary ammonium salt silane-TCNQ adduct (ST) was prepared by reacting quaternary ammonium salt terminated silane with $Li^+TCNQ^-$ solution. Poly (dimethylsiloxane)-ST adduct (PST) was prepared by condensation of $\alpha,\omega-hydroxyl$ group terminated poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with ST. Maleated polyethylene modified with PDMS (PST-g-MPE) was prepared by melt polymerization of maleated PE and PST in internal mixer and PST-g-MPE/carbon black (CB) and MPE/CB composites were prepared by compounding PST with MPE and PST-g-MPE, respectively. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were measured and dispersion characteristics of CB in matrix rosins show that the dispersion of CB in PST-g-MPE/CB was better than that of MPE/CB composite.

  • In this study, novel quaternary plastomers consisting of ethylene, 1-hexene, high ${\alpha}$-olefin, and divinylbenzene were prepared using Zr metallocene catalyst, borate type cocatalyst, and tri-isobutylaluminium. The molar ratio changes of 1-hexene and high ${\alpha}$-olefin (1-octene, 1-decene, and 1-dodecene) had an effect on the properties of the quaternary plastomers. The structure of the quaternary plastomers was characterized using $^1H$ NMR. Molecular weight properties, crystallinity, and thermal properties of the plastomers were determined by GPC, WAXS, and DMA, respectively. Compared with the terpolymers prepared in our previous study, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the quaternary polymers were very similar, whereas glass transition temperature ($T_g$) was very low. Also, hardness and tensile properties of the quaternary plastomers were measured.

  • Maleic anhydride (MA) modified ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (MEPDM) was pre-pared from solution polymerization. MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was prepared by melt polymerization of male ate d EPDM and quaternary ammonium silyl polydimethylsiloxane -7,7,8,8- tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) adduct (PST) in internal mixer and MEPDM-g-PST/HDPE/CB (MPEC) was prepared by com-pounding HDPE, MEPDM-g-PST copolymer and carbon black (CB, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), and HDPE/ CB (PEC) by compounding HDPE and CB (5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), respectively. The structure of MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was confirmed by measuring the FTIR. The maximum grafting ratio of MA onto EPDM was 2.35%. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were measured and dispersion characteristics of CB in matrix show that CB in MPEC was better dispersed than that in PEC composite.

  • The major classes of antimicrobial agents for textiles include organo-metallics, phenols, quaternary ammonium salts, and organo-silicones. These finishes should be durable, have selective activity towards undesirable organisms, be compatible with other finishes and dyes, and be nontoxic to man [1]. Chitosan, as a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is a natural, non-toxic and biodegradable polymer. Chitosan is also known as an antimicrobial polysaccharide due to antimicrobial action of the amino group at the C-2 position of the glucosamine residue.(omitted)

  • A fluorescing, copolymer(Q)-bearing, quaternary ammonium pendant was mixed with excess natural salmon sperm DNA with a molecular weight of $1.3{\times}10^6$(2,000 base pairs) to afford highly fluorescing, complex mixtures. The fluorescence life-time of the polymer Q was greatly increased when mixed with DNA: for the mixture of Q:DNA=1:750 the fast and slow decay lifetimes increased from ca. 10 to 100 ps and from 20 ps to ca. 1 ns, respectively. The enhanced fluorescence of the mixtures was ascribed to efficient compartmentalization and reduced conformational relaxation of the polymer Q by complexation with excess DNA.

  • In this paper, the isothermal crystallization kinetics of a functional PP (FPP) with different grafting yields (GY)-methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) grafted PP were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the crystallization rate of FPP (GY=4.83%) was the highest for all of the studied samples. Furthermore, for the FPP with different GY, the value of $t_{1/2}$ became longer with increasing the grafting yield (GY). The possible explanation was that the quaternary ammonium groups introduced affected the crystallization process of the FPP in two opposite directions, i.e. promoting the nucleation and hindering the transport of the chain molecules towards the growing nuclei. Polarized optical micrographs showed that the DMC chains acted as nucleating agents, which accelerated the nucleation. In addition, the results showed the FPP had lower nucleation free energy than the PP. This study would be useful for designing the processing parameters of the grafted samples.

  • Na-bentonite (local clay mineral) and Na-montmorillonite were treated with quaternary alkylammonium cations. The effect of the molecular structure and functional groups of the surfactants on the organoclays was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the preparation of nanocomposites, organoclays were melt-blended with polypropylene in a twin screw extruder and $Surlyn^{(R)$. ionomer was used as a reactive compatibilizer. The clay dispersions in the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD spectra showed no peak at low angle indicated that the silicate clay layer has a nearly exfoliated dispersion in the polymer matrix. Thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were higher than those of PP.
