  • The lily symptomless virus (LSV) is the most common virus in Korean native lilies and causes various types of damage to overall plant growth. This study was carried out to investigate the elimination rate of the LSV by the in vitro scale culture (scaling) method in Korean native lilies and to test reinfection rates of the LSV under several field culture conditions of bulb production. Four Korean native lilies (Lilium dauricum, L. distichum, L. lancifolium, and L. maximowitzii) were used and their scales were cultured in vitro for micro-scale formation. The micro-scales were subcultured repeatedly using MS culture medium supplemented with 30 or $90g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sucrose. The culture conditions were $24{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD with 16 hour daylength using fluorescent lamps and maintained at $22{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The virus-free bulblets were grown for one to three years in the greenhouse and transplanted to the field in October or March. Virus infection rates were investigated by direct tissue blotting immunobinding assays and measurement of chlorophyll and protein contents. Virus-free plants could be obtained from the 5th subculture of micro-scales in L. lancifolium and L. maximowitzii or from primary culture in L. dauricum and L. distichum. LSV-free plants were reinfected during bulb production in the field. Reinfection rates were higher at older bulb ages and under higher planting density. The plants planted in October and at inland Gyeongsan had higher infection rates than those planted in March and at coastal area Pohang. The reinfection rate of L. maximowitzii was higher than those of L. dauricum and L. lancifolium. The LSV-infected plants had lower chlorophyll contents and unchanged protein contents compared to virus-free plants.

  • Stump pyometra is defined as a reinfection or inflammation of uterine remnant after ovariohysterectomy. We surveyed four bitches which were serviced in the veterinary medical teaching hospital of Seoul National University. In this Paper we studied the method for diagnosis of stump pyometra by symptoms, blood tests, and ultrasound films. To detect the stump pyometra is difficult because clinical signs are verb similar to the normal pyometra. Especially symptoms could noticed be noticed even by their owner until dogs have a vaginal discharge. Blood test also were in normal range in each item except in the elevation of the number of while blood cells. We conclude ultrasonic observation add experimental laparotomy has a significant meaning to diagnosis the stump pyometra.

  • Eight dogs were experimentally infected with Sarcocystis by oral inoculation of cardiac muscle from naturally infected cattle. The infected dogs commenced discharging of sporocysts in the feces after 10 to 12 days of inoculation, and continued until 20 and 35 days after inoculation. Three dogs were reinfected with cardiac muscle from the naturally infected cattle. Sporocysts reappeared in the feces on 12 to 13 days after reinfection. Sarcosystis sporocysts collected from the experimentally infected dogs were fed to each of the two 30-day-old Korean native calves. The infected calves remained clinically normal, except for the high fever (${\geq}{\;} 40^{\circ}C$) and decreased hematocrit values on day 30 to 40 post inoculation. Muscular cysts of Sarcocystis were found from infected calves on day 40 post inoculation. Proliferative forms of Sarcocystis were also observed in the muscle of infected calves. These results suggest that the Sarcocystis cruzi found in Korean native cattle has a 2-host life cycle with dogs as the definitive host and Korean native calves as the intermediate host.

  • Oriental liver fluke (Clonorchis sinensis) infection was surveyed among residents of Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea during the period of January 2001 to March 2002. Total 1,041 stool samples were collected from residents who visited Public Health Center and its branches in Hamyang-gun and examined using formalin-ether sedimentation method. The overall egg positive rate was 16%, male showing higher positive rate (21%) than female (10%). The age group of 30 to 50 years had the highest egg positive rate of C. sinensis from 20% to 22%. The positive examinees were treated with praziquantel and educated individually to prevent reinfection . Egg positive rate in this area was decreased when compared with results recorded in the past, however, still remained more than 10%. This study suggests that periodic examination, treatment as well as education of residents should be continued and systematized.

  • Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis is a warty form of cutaneous tuberculosis. It is a paucibacillary disorder caused by external reinfection of mycobacteria into the skin of previously sensitized individuals with moderate to strong cell-mediated immunity. Inoculation arises at sites of minor wounds, or rarely from the patient's sputum. Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis begins as a small papule and grows slowly by peripheral expansion, sometimes reaching a size of several centimeters or more in diameter. For definitive diagnosis of cutaneous tuberculosis, the demonstration of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is essential. However, the laboratory diagnosis of paucibacillary cutaneous tuberculosis is very difficult owing to the poor sensitivity of routine available methods. Herein, we report two cases of tuberculosis verrucosa cutis definitively confirmed by mycobacterial culture in Korean patients who had received bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination earlier in life.

  • Objectives The purpose of this report is to represent decubitus ulcer(pressure sore) improved by carbon arc and oriental medicine. Methods Patients with decubitus ulcer were treated with carbon arc, acupuncture, herbal medicine and simple dressing. Laser was irradiated at ulcer site once a day for 5 hour, using cored carbon number 3000,3002. Simple dressing with wound cleansing was performed to prevent reinfection. Herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment were applied to improve patients' general condition. Ulcer sizes and aspects were carefully checked by one week. Results Sizes of the decubitus ulcer decreased. Stage of ulcer was improved from stage 3 to stage 2. These results show that carbon arc may play a role in treating the decubitus ulcer with oriental medicine.

  • In Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, antibodies against strains of Orientia tsutsugamushi, Kato, Karp and Gilliam, were produced in order to investigate their longevity and cross-reactivities to their corresponding homologous and heterologous antigens. By immunofluorescence assay (IFA) of IgG and IgM, it was shown that the immunity to the homologous strains persisted at a higher level (longevity of at least 34 weeks with higher IFA titers). On the other hand, the immunity to the heterologous strains persisted at a lower level (longevity of 10 to 34 weeks with lower IFA titers). Since infection with one strain of O. tsutsugamushi does not preclude reinfection with other strains, understanding of the antigenic diversity of O. tsutsugamushi and duration of the immunity to both homologous and heterologous strain is very important in diagnosis of scrub typhus.

  • During the past decade, the use of osseointegrated implants as a foundation for prosthetic replacement of missing teeth has become highly predictable and successful. SPT(Supportive Periodontal Therapy) identified as regular visits to the therapist for periodontal control and maintenance in a well-organized scheme, the number of appointments per year following a pre-designed subject-tooth/implant-site risk assessment method. Peri-implant disease was a frequent finding in subjects having natural healthy dentition and in subjects without periodontitis. Supportive periodontal program were found to be strongly related to implant survival. This study demonstrates that regular maintenance reduces the risk for peri-implant inflammation significantly as compared with irregular maintenance. This underlines the value of the SPT in enhancing the long-term outcomes of implant therapy, particularly in subjects affected by periodontitis, in order to control reinfection and limit biological complications. It is highly recommended to maintain implant patients under a strict supportive periodontal treatment protocol that might contribute to implant survival, and regular maintenance reduces the risk for periimplant inflammation significantly as compared with irregular maintenance. Ideally, patients may be informed on the beneficial effect of a regular patient-related post-therapy care before implant insertion.
