  • To investigate the necessity and background of the metal recycling from urban mine resources, 4 bigger problems such as the limitation of the underground resources, consumption of the metal resources, contamination of environment and metal recycling business were reviewed. Waste management and recycling are the foremost issues facing Korea on its path to sustainable development in the 21st century. Especially, metal recycling from urban mines is the most urgent fact for global environment and resources conservation. In order to build a recycling-oriented society, it is necessary to develop the recycling technology, recycling practices and a recycling-oriented economic system.

  • In order to review the recycling status of urban mine resources in Taiwan, background and history of recycling industries, system of the recovery fund management committee(RFMC), copper recycling with non-ferrous metals, recycling of ELV(end of life vehicles) and recycling of EAF dust were surveyed. Taiwan is a leading country of the world in the metal consumption per capita. Therefore, a lot of waste metals were generated. In other words, urban mine resources are abundant in Taiwan and have some advantages in recycling. There are more than thou-sand recycling plants in Taiwan. Half of them are non-ferrous metal recyclers.

  • Prior to discuss on recycling status and future prospects for the non-ferrous metals in the Korea, Japan and U.S.A. respectively, worldwide resources of non-ferrous metals and characteristics with recycling of non-ferrous metals are reviewed. In case of recovery non-ferrous metals, recycling of automobile shredder dust and E.A.F. dust are illustrated. Finally, the problems and technological developments associated with recycling of non-ferrous metals are summarized.

  • In order to prospect current recycling status in Korea, wastes generation and recycling rate were reviewed. Approximately 188,600 ton/day of wastes was generated in 1998; 44,600 ton/day of domestic waste and 144,000 ton/day of industrial waste. During the last five years, waste management laws such as recycling law and environment friendly industry law were prepared. In this article, concerning over waste generation and recycling, the problems and technological developments associated with recycling were summarized.

  • Sustainable supply of minerals and energy is global problem. Metals and energy consumption in the world has increased with economic growth. Currently more than 40 metals are systematically extracted and used in many different fields in civilized society. Recycling and reuse have become very important because recycling contributes to supplying the materials and protecting the environment of society. It is not realistic that all waste materials are capable of being recycled, because recycling metals have fundamentally been competing with primary production. In this point of view, prior to discuss on current recycling technology of waste resources in Korea, world wide trend and Korean recent activity in the supply-demand far minerals and energy resources are reviewed.

  • Currently, the global atmosphere around the world is altering at a very rapid pace. Among those changes, some are beneficial, but most of the changes are lead to destruction to our planet. The area of environmental science is a significant resource for learning more about these changes. Due to the urbanization, the human population is increasing, natural resources becoming very limited. To solve the limited resources issues, recycling is absolutely an alternative source for the new demands and limitations. Recycling education is very important to raise awareness among students and their communities about the need for recycling and what materials are recyclable locally. In this paper, we reported the role of sustainability science and technology and the impact of recycling research education in the middle schools, both in developing countries and Asian countries and also we included the brief data of global recycling of waste.
