A review on - Focused on a character Gang Nam-hong -

『옥루몽』소고 - 강남홍 인물 분석을 중심으로 -

This study took ‘Hanmunhyuntobon (typography, 1915) as mainsubject and I have studied ideal female icon that 19 century noblemendesired for through detailed analysis on characters and change of classin spatial structure of Gang Nam-hong in .Gang Nam-hong was a humble courtesan. She met an intellectualYang Chang-gok and actively made a connection with him with thedream to escape from her class. However, she failed in this primarilyand kept her faithfulness by devoting her life. She dreamed to elevateher class as a life of female general performances but her social valuewas recognized only in the relationship with Yang Chang-gok under thereality of patriarchalsystem although she had outstanding talents.Moreover, she was a concubine in the family but dominated on the wifeand concubine that she executed actual leadership and firmly establishedsocial and domestic authority through ‘womb family.’Gang Nam-hong was devoted to patriarchal order such as ‘a wifeshould follow her husband’ ‘a wife should concur her husband’s opinion’and ‘three laws a wife should obey’ but also adversely used them torealize her desire to elevate class and live a successful life.GangNam-hong was an ideal female icon under patriarchalsystem illustratedby 19 century noble male writer.

본 연구는 ‘한문현토본(활판, 1915)’을 주요 연구 대상으로 사용하였으며, 『옥루몽』에서 강남홍의 공간적 구조에 따른 인물형상, 신분 등의 변화에 대한 세밀한 분석을 통하여 19세기 사대부들이 지향하는 이상적인 여성상을 살펴보았다. 강남홍은 천한 관기로서 양창곡이라는 수재를 만나 능동적으로 결연함으로써 자기의 신분 탈출을 꿈꾸지만 일차적으로는 좌절을 당하며 목숨으로 자신의 정절을 지킨 여성이었다. 여장수로서의 삶과 그의 활약상을 통해 신분 상승 욕망을 꿈꾸지만 가부장제 현실 하에서 비범한 재능을 겸비하였다 할지라도 양창곡과의 관계에서만 사회적 가치를 인정받았다. 또한 가정에서는 비록 첩 신분이지만 처첩의 위에 군림하여 실제적인 주도권을 행사하고 ‘자궁 가정’을 통한 사회적, 가정적 권위의 확립을 공고히 한 인물이다. 강남홍은 여필종부(女必從夫), 부창부수(夫唱婦隨), 삼종지도(三從之道) 등 가부장적 질서에 충실하면서 오히려 그것을 역으로 이용하여 궁극적으로 자신의 신분 상승의 욕망을 실현하고 성공적인 삶을 산 여성상이라고 볼 수 있다. 강남홍은 19세기 사대부 남성문인이 그려낸 가부장제 하의 이상적인 여성상이라고 할 수 있다.
