Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find how the ideal houses are expressed for the masses in a society through publication. For this, I compared the media like pattern books, catalogs and brochures dealing the suburban houses printed in two periods when the public interests about the ideal family and house were high: the late 19th century and the mid 20th century. The pattern books and catalogs in the mid 19th century focused on the exterior perspectives while the brochures in the mid 20th century tried to show the interior images including inhabitants. Those image layouts reflect that the most important thing for the ideal house for the masses was the good tastes appeared to the outside in the mid 19th century, while it was the modern life styles with technologies in the mid 20th century.
