A Intertextuality on the “Bordering Night” and the “Dawning Night”

본 논문은 김동환의 「국경의 밤」이 1925년에 출간된 후 「지새는 밤」이 1930년에 발표되어 5년이라는 시간차를 두고 있지만 인물, 사건, 배경 등의 서사구조인 소설기법을 시에 수용하여 긴밀한 관계를 형성하고 있는 상호텍스트성에 주목하였다. 김동환이 발표한 「국경의 밤」은 전통적인 서사시처럼 과거의 영웅을 주인공으로 하지 않고 평범한 인물을 내세워 민족 공동체의 운명을 드러낸 서사시이다. 이 서사시의 영향을 가장 많이 김억의 서사시 「지새는 밤」은 서사구조와 인물들의 행적, 주제의식 등에서 「국경의 밤」과 밀접하게 연관된 상호텍스트적인 관계를 형성하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 두 작품의 제목에서부터 젊은 남녀 간의 사랑을 만남-이별-재회라는 낭만적인 서사, 이향과 귀향의 모티브, 두만강과 압록강의 작품 배경인 국경, 이주민의 실상, 식민지 민족의 비극성을 드러낸 주제의식 등이 거의 비슷하게 전개되고 있었다. 특히 두 작품의 공간적 배경인 두만강과 압록강은 원초적인 생명을 상징하는 서사시 배경의 핵심적인 상관물로 자리하여 1930년대 이후 전개되는 서사시의 배경에 영향을 끼친다. 따라서 이 두 작품은 1920년대 서사시는 서구개념의 서사시의 영향보다 한국 전통서사를 계승 발전한 현대서사시의 출발점을 마련하는 데 기여하고 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.

The characteristics of epic poetry were examined starting from 1920sthrough comparing the “Bordering Night” by Kim Dong-hwan and the“Dawning Night” by Kim Eck. After the “Bordering Night” waspublished in 1925 as the first modern epic poem, the “Dawning Night”(1930) was published. This thesis started by paying attention to the factthat they are formed in a very similar structure of figures, incidents andbackgrounds for both works.Unlike the characteristic that a protagonist in a traditional epic poemtakes the responsibility for the destiny of a national community as ahero in the past, the epic “Bordering Night” started in a new stylewhere the national consciousness is addressed under the superficialhighlight that the tragic love between an ordinary man and an ordinarywoman. Even Eok evaluating the “Bordering Night” as the first longepic has the common aspects as he made a creative work the“Dawning Night” addressing the national consciousness around theromantic epic between a man and a women.Both Kim Dong-hwan and Kim Eck are poets who introduced thetraditional folk songs to the poetry. In their epic poetry, we can findcommon aspects where they inserted folk songs and revealed thetragedy of people in a colonial land through the romantic epic in thelove, separation and reunion between a young man and a young woman(Sangji University)with their specific backgrounds and facts of migrant people amongothers. Through those aspects, the characteristics of sentimentalismaccommodated in the epic poetry could be considered as therepresentation of romanticism in the lyrical poetry from the epic poetryof both the “Bordering Night” and the “Dawning Night”. Accordingly,the implications from the epic poetry in 1920s can be considered asreality was applied to the epic poetry, where the contemporary realitycould be recognized with the revelation of romantic sentimentalism withthe insertion of Korean traditional folk songs, rather than the influenceof epic poetry under the Western concept.
