Abstract

Research on the Buddhist architecture of Goryeo Dynasty has not been active enough compared to the case of earlier development such as Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla Period. This paper aims to identify the general nature of temple architecture of Goryeo Dynasty focusing on the site condition of ruined temples as well as the background motivation of temple construction. The research was based on both excavational and literary materials. More than 40 excavated temple sites were investigated discussing on the issues such as dates of construction, scale of the site, locational condition, and so on. These information were analysed based on the viewpoints like background motivation of the temple construction and periodical pattern of change. This research, at least, can provide useful base of historical development for the future study of Goryeo Buddhist architecture. This research, too, is earlier step which will be followed by consecutive publications in the near future on the architectural development of Buddhist architecture of Goryeo Dynasty.
