Measurement of Initial Tension Force Acting on Wire Rope

Abstract

A tension force of tension member in suspension structure plays an important role in structural stability evaluation. Methods of measuring the tension force such as string theory, linear regression method, vibration method, and image processing technique have been developed recently. This paper provides the method of measuring the tension force acting on a wire rope of structure through considering a variable ${\alpha}$ about a length of wire lope. This study suggests a equation to estimate initial tension force $T_0$ from measuring tension force T changed by lateral force V and lateral displacement ${\delta}$. According to the equation, when the length of the measuring part is smaller than the total length of the tension member ($${\alpha}{\frac{._-}{.}}{\infty}$$), axial stiffness EA of tension member would be neglected and the tension force is only measured by the deflection ratio ${\beta}$. The experiments were carried out and the equation was derived by considering various variables. As a result of the experiment, it is appropriate to measure the initial tension force with the error range of about 10% when the lateral displacement ${\delta}$ corresponds to L/15 (${\beta}=15$) for the length L of the measuring part. In case of ${\beta}=15$, $T_0/V$ is converged by 3.54 when the total length of the wire rope is longer than the length of the measuring part relatively.
