Abstract

In order to explore the potential use of Ecklonia cava which is abundant under coastal ocean in Korea for helping human's skin health in textiles, cotton fabric was dyed with Ecklonia cava extract at varied conditions including temperature, duration, dye concentration, pH, and dyeing repetition and it was evaluated as for fastness, antimicrobial activity, and sun protective property. As results, Ecklonia cava extract was estimated by HPLC to have $1,576{\mu}g/mg$ of Fucoxanthin known as a main functional colorant in brown algae. The fabric was optimized for maximum dye uptake at temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, duration of 50 min along all dye concentrations. The dyed fabric showed a color spectrum from Red Purple through Red to Yellow Red depending on dye concentrations. Repetition dyeings with lower concentration such as 50% and 90% owf respectively provided better fastness grades than single dyeing conditions showing identical color shade to them. They were also revealed to exhibit excellent anti-microbial activity even up to ten repetitions of laundry. As for sun protective property, dyeing with more than 50% owf Ecklonia cava on cotton fabric seemed to give higher UPF than 30 while undyed fabric had 8.4. These results imply that Ecklonia cava has a great potential to be used in textile dyeing for dermally functional clothing.
