본고는 박목월 시에 나타난 절망과 죽음에 관하여 논의하였다. 박목월은 역동적인 변화와 깊이 있는 사유를 보여주었다. 그의 시를 높이 평가하게 되는 이유 중 하나는 그의 시에 나타난 삶의 질곡과 비애 때문이었다. ‘2. 현실적 고뇌와 치유의 소망’은 초기시의 내면구조를 분석하였다. 이 시기에 나타난 자연의 형상 속에는 현실적 고뇌가 숨어 있다. 시인은 세속을 초월하여 싶은 자의 꿈과 고뇌를 형상화하였다. ‘3. 죽음의 인식과 화해의 지향’은 중기시의 내면구조를 분석하였다. 이 시기에 나타난 죽음의식은 화해의 시의식과 이어진다. 시인은 가족과 이웃의 삶에 대한 인식을 형상화하였다. ‘4. 종교적 귀의와 죽음의 포용’은 후기시의 내면구조를 분석하였다. 이 시기의 작품들은 주로 기독교의식에 근간을 둔 신앙시다. 시인은 죽음을 승화하려는 시의식을 형상화하였다. 박목월은 한국현대시사의 중요한 시인이다. 그의 시가 높은 문학적 성취에 도달한 것은 생의 구체성 덕분이었다. 특히 그의 시세계에 깃든 절망과 죽음은 그의 시에 깊은 사유를 불어넣는 데에 기여하였다.
