Abstract

This study analyzed the impact of overpass-type wildlife crossings and environmental factors on wildlife roadkill occurrences in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea. Using roadkill data from 2021 to 2023, the study examined the effect of overpass-type wildlife crossings on roadkill occurrences and investigated the correlation between land cover types, NDVI, and roadkill presence. The average number of roadkill incidents in areas with overpasses was 9.52, which was significantly lower than the 15.83 incidents recorded in areas without overpasses. Furthermore, the variability in roadkill occurrences was found to be lower in areas with overpasses. A logistic regression model examining the relationship between roadkill presence and surface environmental factors showed an AUC value of 0.77, indicating a satisfactory level of predictive power. Roadkill occurrences were positively correlated with urban/built-up areas, agricultural lands, and forest areas, while negative correlations were observed with water bodies and the r_NDVI mean. These results confirm the effectiveness of overpass-type wildlife crossings in reducing roadkill. To develop effective roadkill mitigation strategies, it is necessary to consider habitat environmental factors when designing and managing wildlife crossings to develop effective roadkill mitigation strategies.
