Abstract
This study aims to develop a swimsuit textile design using the motifs of the "Chung"(忠) character from Hyojemunjado. The geometric characteristics and symbolism of the Chung character were analyzed and reinterpreted into modern swimsuit textile design. The research method involves a literature review to explore the history and meaning of Hyojemunjado, followed by empirical research that derived the formative characteristics of 36 Chung character motifs. Subsequently, a survey was conducted to select appropriate colors, tones, and patterns for textile design. In the design process, symbolic elements such as dragons, carp, shrimp, clams, and bamboo were transformed into textile patterns, which were applied to the final swimsuit design through FGI with fashion designers and consumer feedback. The results revealed that consumer awareness of traditional patterns was low, but the swimsuit designs utilizing these patterns were perceived as unique and original. Particularly, colors including black, blue, and green, along with vivid and pastel-toned geometric or abstract patterns, were favored. This study demonstrates the potential for a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean patterns and suggests that it can contribute to promoting Korean culture in the global fashion market.
