Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the recent clinical trends of the traditional Chinese medicine modality of acupuncture for ankle sprain and suggest directions for future research. Methods We investigated recent clinical studies on acupuncture for ankle sprain by searching the database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure. We analyzed the characteristics of the selected studies by study design, published year, sample size, treatment methods, periods, and evaluation methods. Results Twenty clinical studies published from 2019 to 2023, comprising 13 randomized controlled trials and 7 case reports, were analyzed. In these studies, several types of acupuncture treatments were performed, and the most common treatment was manual acupuncture. The most used evaluation method was effective rate. Conclusions Overall, Chinese literature reported acupuncture to have a positive effect on ankle sprain. However, a lack of high-grade well-designed clinical studies and objectivity of the outcomes are the limitations of the included studies. Further studies are required on acupuncture for ankle sprain.
