Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture at the SP12 in a patient with hip pain after total hip arthroplasty for avascular necrosis of the femoral head. A 67-year-old man with total hip arthroplasty was treated with ultrasound-guided pharmacopuncture at the SP12 and herbal medicine during a 16-day hospitalization. Patient assessments included numerical rating scale (NRS), physical examination, EuroQoL-5 dimension (EQ-5D), hip Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (hip WOMAC) and blood labs. After treatment, NRS decreased from 8 to 2 and hip WOMAC decreased from 66 to 12. EQ-5D increased from 0.406 to 0.730. On physical examination, active hip range of motion increased, edema was reduced and walking state improved. Analgesics were tapered. On follow-up blood labs, inflammatory markers decreased. Symptomatic improvement was sustained over the treatment period, and no serious adverse events were observed.
