Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment including ultrasound-guided epidural pharmacopuncture for acute lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Three patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed LDH were treated with Korean medicine treatment including ultrasound-guided interlaminar epidural pharmacopuncture. Patient assessments included herniated disc extent, herniated disc anterior-posterior diameter, EuroQoL-5 dimension (EQ-5D), numeric rating scale (NRS), Oswestry disability index (ODI). All cases showed decreases in NRS and ODI and an increase in EQ-5D. On follow-up MRI, cases 1 and 3 showed marked improvements in nerve root compression. Notably, the changes observed during hospitalization were significant. This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment including ultrasound-guided epidural pharmacopuncture may effectively reduce low back pain and radiculopathy; however, further research is needed to confirm these results.
