Effectiveness of Manual Therapy on Urinary Incontinence: A Systematic Review

초록

Objectives This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated manual therapy for urinary incontinence compared to various control treatments. Methods For the systematic reviews and meta analysis, we searched 11 domestic and international databases. The study included research published up to July 2024 and only included randomized controlled trials. Results A total of 883 articles were retrieved, out of which 12 articles were finally selected. The most studies were published in 2022. The total number of study participants was 2,832, with 1,465 in the treatment group and 1,367 in the control group, all of whom were women. In the treatment group, the most frequently used intervention was myofascial techniques, while in the control group, pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) was the most commonly used. A total of 42 evaluation indicators were used in the study. Conclusions Excluding standalone massage therapy and integrated Korean medicine treatment (visceral manual therapy and PFMT), standalone manual therapy and combined Korean medicine treatments (massage with PFMT, manual therapy with pilates, manual therapy with physical therapy, myofascial manual therapy with PFMT, and massage with acupuncture therapy) have been proven effective in treating urinary incontinence. Among the 42 different evaluation indicators, further research is necessary to establish criteria that more accurately assess urinary incontinence symptoms.
