Spatial Distribution and Characteristics of Urban Sprawl Patterns: A Case Study of Jinju-City, Gyeongnam

Abstract

지방 중소도시에서 도시 스프롤 현상이 심화되고 있으며, 효과적인 도시성장관리 방안을 마련하기 위해 스프롤 현상에 대한 분석 및 진단이 요구된다. 이에 본 연구는 경남 진주시를 사례로, 2007년과 2024년의 토지피복도를 활용하여 스프롤의 공간적 특성을 분석하였다. 스프롤 지역을 도심확장형, 부도심형, 군집형, 선형, 분산형으로 유형화하고, 유형별 분포와 인구·사업체, 건축물, 지가 등 속성을 종합적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 진주시는 도심 중심부에 시가화가 집중되고 외곽으로 갈수록 시가화 면적이 감소하는 연속적·저밀도 확산 구조가 나타났다. 부도심이 도심 수준으로 성장하였으며, 군집형 스프롤 지역의 면적은 감소하였으나 내부 속성은 크게 증가하였다. 따라서 도심과 부도심을 중심으로 압축 성장을 유도하고, 외곽에 분산되어 있는 인구 및 시설은 군집형 지역으로 유도하여, 도심-부도심-군집형 지역 간 연결을 강화하는 도시공간구조를 고려할 필요가 있다.

Urban sprawl has intensified in small and medium-sized cities in Korea, underscoring the need for effective analysis to support urban growth management. This study analyzes the spatial characteristics of sprawl in Jinju, Gyeongnam, using land cover data from the year 2007 and 2024. Sprawl areas were categorized into five types-CBD expansion, sub-center, clustered, linear, and scattered-and their spatial distribution was examined alongside attributes such as population, businesses, buildings, and land value. Results show that built-up areas are concentrated in the city center and gradually diminish toward the periphery, forming a continuous low-density pattern. Sub-centers have developed to levels comparable to the CBD, and although clustered areas have decreased in size, their characteristics have significantly intensified. Based on these findings, compact growth should be focused around CBD and sub-center areas, while dispersed populations and facilities in outer zones should be guided toward clustered areas to strengthen spatial connectivity.
