Abstract

This study aimed to examine the composition of digital literacy elements in authorized elementary science textbooks for third- and fourth-grade students, and based on the finding, to propose directions and implications for improving digital literacy education. The results were as follows. First, the analysis by grade showed that "Use of digital information" appeared most frequently, whereas "Creation and collaboration of digital information" appeared least frequently. "Use of digital devices and software" was more prevalent in third-grade textbooks, while "Digital ethics and information protection" showed a notable increase in fourth-grade textbooks. Second, the analysis by publisher revealed substantial variation in the composition and distribution of digital literacy elements, indicating a potential digital literacy gap depending on textbook selection. Third, analysis by content area showed that "Use of digital devices and software" and "Use of digital information" were emphasized in the movement and energy domain, whereas "Use of digital information" and "Digital ethics and information protection" were more prominent in other domains. Overall, these findings highlight the need to promote balanced development of digital literacy elements across grade levels and content areas, encourage digital learning activities that reflect the characteristics of each domain, and expand attention to elements such as digital problem-solving and collaborative problem-solving.
