Abstract
This study examined how elementary school teachers guide and reflect on student-led physics inquiries during the preparation process for science fairs, thereby providing a detailed understanding of inquiry-based teaching practices in elementary physics education. The participants were five elementary school teachers who had supervised science fair projects in the physics domain within the past 3 years. Their instructional approaches were analyzed through time-sequenced narrative case analyses, focusing on their interactions, instructional decisions, and reflective practices. The findings revealed that the participating teachers moved beyond traditional, answer-centered instruction to fostering collaborative, inquiry-oriented learning environments. They engaged students in actively co-constructing experimental structures, encouraged repeated trials and modifications, and valued their students' sensory expressions and intuitive language as starting points for scientific conceptualization. During the presentation phase, teachers supported students in reflecting metacognitively on their inquiry processes and articulating their learning in their own words. This instructional approach helped reposition students from passive recipients of knowledge to active explorers and designers of scientific understanding. This study highlights the potential of science fair projects as meaningful contexts for facilitating student agency and conceptual development in elementary physics education; it also underscores the pedagogical value of teacher-student interactions in shaping inquiry-based science learning and provides implications for designing instructional models that support student-centered inquiry in elementary-level science and physics education.
