A Qualitative Study of Major Exploration Experiences among Undeclared STEM Students

이공계열 학생들의 전공탐색 경험에 관한 질적 연구: A대학 자율전공학부 학생들의 성찰 에세이를 중심으로

This study aims to qualitatively analyze major exploration essays written by students in the science and engineering track of the Exploratory Major System to gain an in-depth understanding of the patterns of major exploration experiences within this institutional context. To achieve this aim, reflective essays written by 22 students eligible for entry into science and engineering disciplines under University A's Exploratory Major System were used as analytical data. The major exploration process was structured into three stages-preparation, execution, and settlement-and a theoretical thematic analysis was conducted. The findings revealed that during the preparation stage, students experienced initial difficulties such as a lack of self-understanding, limited access to information, and anxiety over decision-making. In the execution stage, the gradual specification of major selection was observed through curricular and extracurricular experiences and social interactions. In the settlement stage, the internalization of major choice was confirmed through the formation of major identity and the establishment of agentic career identity. Based on these findings, this study provides practical evidence for designing stage-specific, tailored major exploration support frameworks for science and engineering students enrolled in the Exploratory Major System.

본 연구는 이공계 자율전공학부 학생의 전공탐색 에세이를 질적으로 분석하여, 전공자율선택제 맥락에서 나타나는 전공탐색 경험의 양상을 심층적으로 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 A대학 자율전공학부에서 이공계열 진입이 가능한 재학생 22명이 전공탐색 교과목에서 작성한 성찰적 에세이를 분석 자료로 활용하여, 전공탐색 과정을 '탐색 준비기-탐색 실행기-탐색 정착기'의 3단계로 구조화하고, 이론 지향적 주제 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 준비기에서는 자기 이해 부족, 정보 접근의 한계, 선택 불안 등 초기 어려움이, 실행기에서는 교과·비교과 경험과 사회적 상호작용을 통한 전공 선택의 구체화가, 정착기에서는 전공 정체감 형성과 주체적 진로 정체성 확립 등 선택의 내면화가 확인되었다. 이를 바탕으로 전공자율선택제 맥락에서 이공계 학생을 위한 단계별 맞춤형 전공탐색 지원체계 설계의 실질적 근거를 제시하였다.
