Abstract
This study compares elementary science-gifted students' and general students' perceptions of science and pseudoscience through scientific and pseudoscientific situations commonly encountered by students in mass media. Accordingly, a descriptive questionnaire comprising two scientific situations and four pseudoscientific situations was developed and administered to 32 elementary students enrolled in a university-affiliated science-gifted education institute and 67 general elementary students. The collected data were analyzed in terms of response accuracy, reasons for judging each situation as science or pseudoscience, and understanding levels based on the quality of students' reasoning. Differences in levels of understanding between the two groups were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Wright maps based on the Rasch model. The results indicated that science-gifted students generally achieved higher rates of correct responses than general students; however, these differences varied across items and did not reach statistical significance in terms of overall mean scores. Additionally, both groups appeared to rely more heavily on the characteristics of the problem situations and the superficial features of the presented materials than on consistently applying stable criteria when judging science and pseudoscience. Regarding their reasoning, science-gifted students more commonly considered experimental processes, scientific explanations, and consistency with prior knowledge, whereas general students relied more on logical explanations, comprehensibility, and usefulness in daily life. Analysis of understanding levels derived from students' reasoning revealed that science-gifted students provided more high-level responses than general students. However, even science-gifted students had difficulty distinguishing science from pseudoscience. Based on these findings, this study highlights the importance of explicitly addressing the nature of science, evidence-based reasoning, fairness in experimentation, and critical interpretation of data in elementary science education and science-gifted education programs.
