PDFRecently, constructions of huge reinforced concrete structures such as nuclear power stations have been increased. When massive concrete is placed, cracking due to the hydration heat of cement is recognized as a major problem. The development of thermal stress is influenced by the structure shape and the constraint conditions, and cracks usually occure from tensile stresses which developed due to temperature drop. In this study a protocol specimen is made to examine the distribution of temperature and thermal stress of reaction wall of Daewoo Institute Construction Technology. The size of the specimen is made by considering minimum size of real structure. In this study, concrete strain gauge, concrete stress gauge, concrete non-stress gauge, and thermocouples, are instrumented to measure thermal stress in massive concrete structure. A new measuring technique is proposed to calculate thermal stress. -

PDFThe maturity concept proposes that concrete of the same mix at the same maturity has the same strength, whatever combination of temperature and time makes up that maturity. Maturity is the integral of time and temperature of concrete above a datum temperature. Tests are conducted in order to determine a datum temperature and to measure compressive strengths and maturity of test specimens. This study also proposes some appropriate functions to represent the relationship between maturity and strength development. -

PDFThe main objective of this study is to determine the critical chloride ion concentrations in the pore solutions causing depassivation of steel reinforcement in concrete made with cements of different$C_3A$ contents. Cement pastes with water-ratio of 0.5 were prepared using four cements with$C_3A$ contents of 0.46, 5.97, 9.14, and 9.65 percent. The pastes were allowed to hydrate in sealed containers for 28days and then objected to pore solution expression. The expressed pore fluids were analyzed for chloride and hydroxyl ion concentrations. It was found that the free cholride concentration in the pore solution decreases significantly with an increase in the$C_3A$ content of the cement. With increasing level of chloride addition, although the alsolute amount of bound chloride increase, the ratio of bound to total chlorides decreases. -

PDFThe property of concrete at different places in mass concrete is affected by the age under the same curing temperature. For more accurate analysis of thermal stress in mass cocnrete, it is necessary to obtain the property of concrete with age and curing temperature. In this study, the effects of curing temperature and age (Maturity) on the development of the property of concrete were investigated by using concrete specimens made with type I cement. The curing temperatures are 23$^{\circ}C$ , 5$0^{\circ}C$ , and 8$0^{\circ}C$ , respectively. As the maturity increases, the strength of concrete was increased. The results obtained experimentlly was compapred with the previous models, and good agreements was obtained. -

PDFRecently, nonlinear fracture mechanics was applied to analyze concrete structures more accurately, and new materials property such as fracture energy(Gf) was used for its application. The fracture energy was influenced by many parameters, especially the strength of concrete. Many researches on the relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy were performed. In spite of many researches on the relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy, there is no distinct conclusion. This research includes various the strength levels from low-strength of concrete to high-strength, and then intends to estimate relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy. Concrete used crushed sand is also included, which is going to be used much. In this research, the wedge splitting test method proposed by Prof. Linsbauer is adopted to investigate the fracture energy. Fracture behavior of concrete used natrual sand and crushed sand has the similar trend. In the strength range of 200~500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ , the fracture energy and the maximum splitting forces(F) increase as the strength of concrete increases. In the range of the higher strength, however, the maximum splitting forces(F) increases but the fracture energy decreases as the strength of concrete increases. Through this investigation the fracture energy of concrete was not proportional to the strength of concrete. -

PDFRecently super-flowing concrete has been developed and used in many construction sites in Japan. It is believed that super-flowing concrete will change the construction method and contribute to the durability of concrete structures. In this study the effect of mix proportion on the flowing characteristics of super-flowing concrete was investigated to establish the mix design method. From the result we have found that self-compactability of super-flowing concrete was greatly affected by the unit gravel volume and paste/gravel volume ratio. Therefore the two parameters can be used in mix design of super flowing concrete. -

PDFIn this study, several rheological properties of binder pastes and concrete are investigated for the development of commercially available fly ash super-flowing concrete. Fly ash contents with 5 leves(0, 10, 20, 30, 40%), slag contents with 6 levels(0, 5, 15, 25, 35, 45%), and water-binder ratios with 4 levels(30, 33, 36, 39%) are selected for test variables to evaluate the super-flowing characteristics of binder pastes. For the estimation of the workability of super-flowing concrete, slump flow, funnel time, box height, and L-flow are measured and compared. As the results, the flow is decreased and the viscosity is increased with increasing fly ash content. Super-flowing concrete is succesfully produced with 30% fly ash replacement. -

PDFThis study attemps to investigate the influence of heat of hydration occured during hardening on the strength development of high strength concrete. The concrete design strengths of 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were considered to simulated the square columns having$80\times80cm$ and$100\times100cm$ , respectively. Both standard curing and field curing specimen were prepared at the specified ages, and the cores were drilled out from the structure. The thermal sensors were installed into the specimen to measure the heat of hydration process occurred during the hardening. This paper tries to uncover the relationship between the temperature history of the concrete and strength development. The correlation of core strength and specimen strength with curing condition is also discussed. Further research is desired to enlight the relationship between strength and heat of hydration of high strength concrete. -

PDFProduction of high strength concrete requires a low water-cement ratio and this leads to the high cement content. Mineral admixture like fly ash(FA) is often cheaper than ordinary portland cement(OPC) and this factor in combination with possible improvement in workability and moderation of the heat evolution of the cement-rich mixes tends to encourage its use. The other mineral admixture that its use has been widly advocated is silica fume that increases compressive strength due to its pozzolanic reaction. The objective of this study is to assess the contribution of mineral admixtures(FA, SF) to the workability and the strength of concrete with low water-binder ratios. In this experimental study that investigates and analyzes the properties of fresh concrete, it is presented that using admixtures like flysh and silica fume as binding material increases properties of high strength flowing concrete having very low water cementitious ratios of 0.25 and 0.30. -

PDFTo reduce the size of structural members, high strength concrete has recently been utilized for structure such as ultra-high-rise buildings and prestressed concrete bridges in North America, and its compressive strength has gone up to 1300kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ . In Japan, research on high-strength concrete has been undertaken on a large scale by the national enterprise so-called New RC Project. And high-strength concrete with a design compressive strength over 450kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ has recently been employed for high rised reinforced concrete building. As a result of the serious land availability situation of metropolitan areas in the world, buildings will become taller, and even higher strengths will be required. In the future, the utilization of high-strength concrete will spread widely through the development of new structural concepts, application of steels of a higher yield stress, silica fume, and other new materials. Considering these circumstance, the aim of this experimental study is to develop ultra-high-strength concrete with compressive strength over 1800kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ with domestic current materials. There are so many factors which influence the manufacturing of ultra-high-strength concrete. The experimental factors selected in this study are mixing methods, curing methods, water-binder ratio, maximum size of coarse by silica fume. The results of this experimental study show that it is possible to develop the ultra-high-strength concrete with compressive strength over 1700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 28days, 1800kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 56 days. -

PDFLow temperature associated damage mechanism is not well known for asphalt concrete. Many studies have related the thermal cracking of pavement in the roadway in cold region with overall shrinkage of the pavement surface under assumption of homogeneous material. This study, however, was intiated based on the assumption that thermal incompatibility of materials (heterogeneous) in asphalt concrete mixture would be the primary cause of the damages. Acoustic emission technique and microscopic obsevation were employed to evaluate damage mechanism of asphalt concrete due to low temperature. The first method showed the sufficient evidence that asphalt concrete could be damaged by lowered temperature only. The second method showed that the damage by temperature resulted in micro-cracks at the interface between asphalt matrix and aggregate particle. It was concluded that these damage mechanisms were the primary cause of major thermal cracking of asphalt pavement in cold region. -

PDFThis study was conducted to evaluate performance of asphalt concretes under various densities, using Marshall specimens before and after freezing-and-thawing treatment. Six different compaction blows per side (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 blows) were applied to specimens to produce different densities. Test results showed that the lower density specimens had the weaker resistance to freezing-and-thawing treatment. The density was an index of retaining fatigue life and displacement after freezing-and-thawing. Therefore, poor compaction in pavement was considered to be a major cause of early distress mechanisms such as rutting, ravelling and cracking, which were resulted in a reduced service life. -

PDFThis study dealt with the properties for fly ash of conbined heat power plant and application for concrete industry. For this purpose, fly ash sampled Ulsan conbined heat power plant and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. As analyzed results of fly ash, contents of$SiO_ and Al_O_ $ in the fly ash of Ulsan were less than those of Thermo-electric power plant(Boryuing), but contents of CaO were tem times as much as those of Boryung, because of these differences, it is expected that pozzolanic activity of concrete using fly ash of Ulsan will be different from another fly ash. Concrete specimens were tested to evaluate concrete preformance when 10 to 50 percent of the portland cement by weight in the concrete mix was replaced with fly ash of conbined heat power plant. As test results, workability and consideration in the fresh concrete were increased and concrete strength was showed more than 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the required age. This study would be provided valuable data for the practical utilization of fly ash(conbined heat power plant). In the future, properties of fly ash concrete including long term strength, elapsed time, pozzolanic activity, modulus of elasticity, sulfate resistance, shrinkage, freeze-thaw durability and so on will be studied. -

PDFThe strength development of polymer concrete using an unsaturated polyester polymer varies depending on many factors. However, the strength development is mostly dependent upon the age and curing temperature if the mixture ratios are the same. This study conducted to experimentally describe the relationship between the strength development and maturity which is defined as a function of$\Sigma$ (time$\times$ temperature). The research result may be applied to predict the compressive, tensile and splitting strengths of the polymer concrete by computing the maturinty of the concrete. -

PDFVarious of batches of recycled concretes were produced with different rations of recycled aggregate (20% and 50%) and admixtures based on workable range of slump value and using a fixed w/c ration. Mechanical characteristics of the recycled concretes were evaluated. Test results showed that, in general, relatively high strength recycled concrete could be obtained using a plasticiser. The concrete using fly ash showed somewhat reduced strength, lower elastic modulus and relatively high strain, in general. However, the strength reduction ratio of the recycled concrete due to adding fly ash was relatively minor, compared with normal concrete. Since it has been known that the fly ash is used in place of cement and gives an improved long term strength, a further study may be warranted for a possibility of using fly ash without degrading the strength required. -

PDFPolymer mortars are mainly used as protective coatings in concrete, reinforced concrete, and more rarely, steel, while polymer concretes represent a new type of structural material capable of withstanding highly corrosive environments. The mechanical properties, chemical stability, and some other useful properties are the reasons research, design, and production organizations. However polymer mortars and polymer concretes have been introduced only recently, and many of their properties are still imperfectly known. And, the main technique in producing polymer concrete is to minimize void volume in the aggregate mass so as to reduce the quantity of the relatively impressive polymer necessary for binding the aggregate. In this study, compressive strength and flexural strength of unsaturated polyester resin concrete are related to quantity of resin and solid volume of aggregate. It was founded that the more solid volume of aggregate increase, the less using quantity of resin decrease with out reducing mechnical properties. When solid volume ratio of aggregate is 70.6%, using quantity of resin is minimized to 10wt.%. -

PDFThis work presents a method of optimum design for reinforced concrete building frames with rectangular cross sections. The optimization techniques used is based on the principle of divided parameters. The design variable parameters are divided into two groups, external and internal, and the optimization is also divided into external and internal procedure. This principle overcomes difficulties arising from the presence of two materials in one element, the property peculiar to reinforced concrete. Several search algorithms are tested to verify their accuracy for the external optimization. Among them pattern search algorithms has been found consistent. This work proposes a new method, modified pattern search, and a number of sample problems prove its accuracy and usefulness. Exhaustive search for all local minima in the design spaces for two sample problems has been carried out to understand the nature of the problem. The number of local minima identified is quite more than expected and it has become understood that the researcher's task in this field is to find a better local minimum if not global. The designs produced by the method preposed have been found better than those from other method, and they are in full accord with ACI Building Code Requirments(ACI 318-89). -

PDFFracture mechanics does work for concrete, provided that one used a proper, nonlinear form of fracture mechanics in which a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important rules. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to the toughness induced by the microcracking, so that the bridging is the dominant mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended macrocrck with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with lenear tension-softening curve for the analyses of crack growth in concrete Finite element technique is shown for inplementation of the model. -

PDFIn this study, analytical methods for predicting the long term behavior of steel-concrete composite structures due to creep and shrinkage of concrete are investigated. For structural analysis considering long term behavior, the results are much dependent6 on the predictive models for creep and shrinkage of concrete which are ACI model, CEB-FIP model and BP model and the methods for the time analysis of structures which are AEMM, RCM and IDM. To demonstrate the validity of the program which was developed for this study, a steel-concrete composite column subjected to constant axial deformation was tested, and the experimental results wewe compared with analytical results. It was found that stresses are redistributed between concrete and wide flange steel, and analytical results by ACI model and IDM well predict the experimental data. -

PDFThis paper presents comprehensive test data on the effect of Epoxy-Bonded Steel Plates on the ultimate strengths, ductilities, failure modes and structural deformations of flexural members strengthened with steel plates on the tension face. To achieve the purpose, six specimens with and without Epoxy-Bonded steel Plates were tested. The results show that Epoxy-Bonded Steel Plate is very effective for strengthening the damaged structure, That is, plated members have enhanced ultimate strength at all load levels until failure. However, the failure mode of plated members is brittle as soon as steel plate separates from concrete face. -

PDFThis experimental study is aiming to investigate the hysteritic behavior of high-strength R/C columns subjected to axial load and lateral load reversals. The five 1/4 scaled specimens were made of high-strength concrete with the design strength load(n=0.2f'cAg, n=0.4f'cAg) and type of transverse reinforcement. From the test results, strength and stiffness degradation of columns under higher axial load is much more serious than that under lower axial load. ductility of columns is enhansed with increasing amount of transverse reinforcement, shear strength is depended on the level of axial load. -

PDFThe purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of floor slab structures with high-strength and lightweight CFRC panel using fly ash, PAN-derived and Pitch-derived carbon fiber. As a result, the flexural strength of CFRC is remarkably increased by CF contents, but compressive strength of the CFRC is not so increased as flexural strength. The bulk specific gravity is influenced by FA contents more than by CF contents, The compressive strength and the flexural strength are increased by FA contests, but decreased the case of 30% of contents. In order to increasing the flexural-carrying capacity of floor slab structures, it is recommended that the shape of anchor for reinforcement is required type-C and the spacing of anchor is required below 60mm. -

PDFFrom the previous experimental test results, it has shown that shear that shear strength in lightweight concrete beams was about 85% on that in normal concrete beams. It is speculated that shear connectors in composite beams of steel and lightweight concrete associated with the longitudinal shear strength decrease more in strength than those in normal concrete. So this paper, as a study on strength of shear connectors in composite beams of steel and lightweight concrete slabs, has a purpose to compare the strength formula resulted from the push-out test of thirteen solid slab and four deck Plate slab with the established ones, and then to suggest a proper strength formula of the shear connectors. The established strength formula of the shear connectors is prescribed for$P_ps = 0.50A_s . \sqrt{f_C . E_C}$ by AISC coed, but from the experimental test results the strength values of the shear connectors in lightweignt concrete slabs shows about 70% on those of the shear connectors in normal concrete slabs by AISC code. Therefore, as a strength formula this paper suggests to multiply the established strength formula by reduction factor$(\varphi=0.7)$ . -

PDFIn Precast Concrete Structure, safety of structure depends on strength of joint. Asa result, there exists a necessity to review the effects of elements consisting joints, since these elements are important factors for evalaution of joint strength. However, there elements are different for construction methods and may be changed even during construction. Obviously, the change of elements can cause the change of joint strength; yet, the effects of the variables are not clearly defined. The behavior of the joints are complicated and evaluated only through experiments. Consequently, the main objective of this paper is to review effects of components consisting Precast Joints, I order to keep higher joint strength than specified in the design code. -

PDFRecently, a large number of box girder bridges with cantilevered decks have been constructed. Especially, segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges are widely used as economic and aesthetic solutions for long span bridges. Segmental erection is a particularly attractive construction alternative in cases where continuously supported formwork is impractical or uneconomical. In segmentally erected bridges, the structural systems are changed as the construction stages are progressive and redistribution of member forces occurs due to time dependent effects of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. Then, in segmentally erected bridges, analysis are required at each construction states. In this study, nonlinear analysis progam of the segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges is developed in taking into account nonlinearity of material and geometry, time dependent effect of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. -

PDFThis paper deals with the problem of plate separation and anchorage at the ends of steel plates strengthened by EBSP. Test results show that the reinforced concrete beams strengthened by EBSP occurs the premature failure without the beams achieving their full flexural strength at the end of plates. The premature failure is the cause of stress concentrations in the adhesive layer of plate, reinforced concrete incase of lack of plate length. Then a simple, approximate procedure for predicting the shear and normal stress concentrations is investigated by Robert's the ory based on partial interaction theory. The theoretical results are compared, and show close agreement with test results. A method is derived for determining the plate length that prevents the premature anchorage zone failure -

PDFRoller compacted concrete(RCC) has been attracted due to its growing application to pavement concrete construction. In this study optimum mixing formation of RCC was explored and characterized its properties forcusing on reducing try and error for actual application to construction of pavement. The concrete used for roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) has very low water content per unit volume, so that it develops early high strength. This high early strength development makes pavement constructed open early. This concrete also showed very reduced crack formed on the surface because of expensive cement. -

PDFThe chemical method and mortar-bar method for identification of the susceptibility to Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) was established as KS method by referencing the ASTM methods. However, the chemical method requires skilled chemical engineers and aggregates are tested in very severe condition, and on the other hand, the mortar-bar method needs a long time of 3 or 6 months. Judging from this circumstance that the use of crushed stones are increased due to the shortage of natural aggregates, the development and standardization of a new rapid test method is considered essential. The purpose of this paper is to research for the possibility to apply the rapid method, instead of the chemical method and the mortar-bar method with using the several domestic crushed stones.
