An experimental study was performed to develop the rotational fuel injection system of the micro turbojet engine. In this system, fuel is sprayed by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. The test rig was designed and manufactured to get droplet information on combustion space. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational device(Air-Spindle), fuel feeder, rotational fuel injector and acrylic case. To understand spray characteristics, spray droplet size, velocity and distribution were measured by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the length of liquid column from injection orifice is controlled by the rotational speeds and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) is decreased with rotational speed. Also, Sauter Mean Diameter is increased as increasing mass flow rate at same rotational speeds.

This paper deals with the aeroelastic instability of vibrating multiple blade rows under aerodynamic coupling with each other. A model composed of three blade rows, e.g., rotor-stator-rotor, where blades of the two rotor cascades are simultaneously vibrating, is considered. The displacement of a blade vibrating under aerodynamic force is expanded in a modal series with the natural mode shape functions, and the modal amplitudes are treated as the generalized coordinates. The generalized mass matrix and the generalized stiffness matrix are formulated on the basis of the finite element concept. The generalized aerodynamic force on a vibrating blade consists of the component induced by the motion of the blade itself and those induced not only by vibrations of other blades of the same cascade but also vibrations of blades in another cascade. To evaluate the aerodynamic forces, the unsteady lifting surface theory for the model of three blade rows is applied. The so-called k method is applied to determine the critical flutter conditions. A numerical study has been conducted. The flutter boundaries are compared with those for a single blade row. It is shown that the effect of the aerodynamic blade row coupling substantially modifies the critical flutter conditions.

Aero-engine, as one kind of rotating machinery with complex structure and high rotating speed, has complicated vibration faults. Therefore, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system is very important for airplane security. In this paper, a vibration data acquisition and intelligent fault diagnosis system is introduced. First, the vibration data acquisition part is described in detail. This part consists of hardware acquisition modules and software analysis modules which can realize real-time data acquisition and analysis, off-line data analysis, trend analysis, fault simulation and graphical result display. The acquisition vibration data are prepared for the following intelligent fault diagnosis. Secondly, two advanced artificial intelligent(AI) methods, mapping-based and rule-based, are discussed. One is artificial neural network(ANN) which is an ideal tool for aero-engine fault diagnosis and has strong ability to learn complex nonlinear functions. The other is data mining, another AI method, has advantages of discovering knowledge from massive data and automatically extracting diagnostic rules. Thirdly, lots of historical data are used for training the ANN and extracting rules by data mining. Then, real-time data are input into the trained ANN for mapping-based fault diagnosis. At the same time, extracted rules are revised by expert experience and used for rule-based fault diagnosis. From the results of the experiments, the conclusion is obvious that both the two AI methods are effective on aero-engine vibration fault diagnosis, while each of them has its individual quality. The whole system can be developed in local vibration monitoring and real-time fault diagnosis for aero-engine.

This paper presents a numerical model of internal flows in a lubricant supplying and scavenging flow path of an aero-engine lubrication system. The numerical model was built in the General Analysis Software of Aero-engine Lubrication System, GASLS, developed by Northwestern Polytechnical University. The lubricant flow flux, pressure and temperature distribution at steady state were calculated. GASLS is a general purpose computer program employed a 1-D steady state network algorithm for analyzing flowrates, pressures and temperatures in a complex flow network. All kinds of aero-engine lubrication systems can be divided into finite correlative typical elements and nodes from which the calculation network be developed in GASLS. Special emphasis is on how to use combined elements which is a type of typical elements to replace some complex components like bearing bores, accessory gearboxes or heat exchangers. This method can reduce network complexity and improve calculation efficiency. Final computational results show good agreement with experimental data.

In this paper, three-dimensional multiblade row unsteady Navier-Stokes simulations at a hot streak temperature ratio of 2.0 have been performed to reveal the effects of rotor tip clearance on the inlet hot streak migration characteristics in low pressure stage of a Vaneless Counter-Rotating Turbine. The hot streak is circular in shape with a diameter equal to 25% of the high pressure turbine stator span. The hot streak center is located at 50% of the span and the leading edge of the high pressure turbine stator. The tip clearance size studied in this paper is 2.0mm(2.59% high pressure turbine rotor height, and 2.09% low pressure turbine rotor height). The numerical results show that the hot streak is not mixed out by the time it reaches the exit of high pressure turbine rotor. The separation of colder and hotter fluid is observed at the inlet of low pressure turbine rotor. Most of hotter fluid migrates towards the rotor pressure surface, and only little hotter fluid migrates to the rotor suction surface when it convects into the low pressure turbine rotor. And the hotter fluid migrated to the tip region of the high pressure turbine rotor impinges on the leading edge of the low pressure turbine rotor after it goes through the high pressure turbine rotor. The migration of the hotter fluid directly results in very high heat load at the leading edge of the low pressure turbine rotor. The migration characteristics of the hot streak in the low pressure turbine rotor are dominated by the combined effects of secondary flow and leakage flow at the tip clearance. The leakage flow trends to drive the hotter fluid towards the blade tip on the pressure surface and to the hub on the suction surface, even partial hotter fluid near the pressure surface is also driven to the rotor suction surface through the tip clearance. Compared with the case without rotor tip clearance, the heat load of the low pressure turbine rotor is intensified due to the effects of the leakage flow. And the numerical results also indicate that the leakage flow effect trends to increase the low pressure turbine rotor outlet temperature at the tip region.

In this paper, heat transfer coefficients were measured in a channel with one side dimpled surface. The sphere type dimples were fabricated and the diameter and depth of dimple was 16mm and 4mm, respectively. Two channel heights of about 0.6 and 1.2 time of the dimple diameter, two dimple configuration were tested. The Reynolds numbers based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 30000 to 50000. The improved hue detection based transient liquid crystal technique was used in the heat transfer measurement. Heat transfer measurement results showed that high heat transfer was induced downstream of dimples due to flow reattachment. Due to the flow recirculation on the upstream side in the dimple, the heat transfer coefficient was very low. As the Reynolds increased, the overall heat transfer coefficients also increased. With same dimple arrangement, the heat transfer coefficients and the thermal performance factor were higher for the lower channel height. As the distance between dimples became smaller, the overall heat transfer coefficient and the thermal performance factor were increased.

In order to investigate the initiation and propagation processes of a spherical detonation wave induced by direct initiation, numerical simulations were carried out using two-dimensional compressible Euler equations with an axisymmetric assumption and a one-step reaction model based on Arrhenius kinetics with various levels of ignition energy. By varying the amount of ignition energy, three typical initiation behaviors, which were subcritical, supercritical and critical regimes, were observed. Then, the ignition energy of more than
$137.5{\times}10^6$ in non-dimensional value was required for initiating a spherical detonation wave, and the minimum ignition energy(i.e., critical energy) was less than that of the one-dimensional simulation reported by a previous numerical work. When the ignition energy was less than the critical energy, the blast wave generated from an ignition source continued to attenuate due to the separation of the blast wave and a reaction front. Therefore, detonation was not initiated in the subcrtical regime. When the ignition energy was more than the minimum initiation energy, the blast wave developed into a multiheaded detonation wave propagating spherically at CJ velocity, and then a cellular pattern radiated regularly out from the ignition center in the supercritical regime. The influence on ignition energy was observed in the cell width near the ignition center, but the cell width on the fully developed detonation remained constant during the expanding of detonation wave due to the consecutive formation of new triple points, regardless of ignition energy. When the ignition energy was equal to the critical energy, the decoupling of the blast wave and a reaction front appeared, as occurred in the subcrtical regime. After that, the detonation bubble induced by the local explosion behind the blast wave expanded and developed into the multiheaded detonation wave in the critical regime. Although few triple points were observed in the vicinity of the ignition core, the regularly located cellular pattern was generated after the onset of the multiheaded detonation. Then, the average cell width on the fully developed detonation was almost to that in the supercritical regime. These numerical results qualitatively agreed with previous experimental works regarding the initiation and propagation processes. -
Film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate was measured with pressure sensitive paint. The pressure sensitive paint(PSP) changes the intensity of its emissive light with pressure and the characteristic was used in film cooling effectiveness measurement. The film coolants were air and nitrogen, and by comparing the intensity of PSP coated surface with each coolant, the film cooling effectiveness was calculated. Three blowing ratio of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested with two mainstream turbulence intensities. Results clearly showed the effect of blowing ratio and mainstream turbulence intensity. As the blowing ratio increases, the film cooling effectiveness was decreased near the film cooling holes. However, the film cooling effectiveness far downstream from the injection hole was higher for higher blowing ratio. As the mainstream turbulence intensity increased, the film cooling effectiveness was decreased at far downstream from the injection hole.

This paper presents an approach of complex control method(CCM) real-time simulation and rapid prototyping for aero-engine control system and describes its principle and realization in detail. This approach is mainly based on MATLAB/RTW for rapid prototyping from system modeling to embedded implementation. According to the simulation results between automatic code and manual code for an aeroengine multi-variable control method, it shows that this approach is feasible and effective, and not only decreases development cycle but also improves the reliability and universality. So a series of problems can be resolved during the simulation stage and rapid application to prototype testing.

Two cases with circumferential grooves were designed for a transonic compressor, and 3-D numerical simulations were conducted for stall mechanism at three representative speeds. A conclusion can be drawn from the comparison between compressors with or without casing treatment that: with the rising of rotation speed, stall margin increases dramatically under the help of casing treatments, and the case with middle grooves has reasonable compromise between stall margin increment and efficiency cutting. At lower speed, the increment reduces, and grooves at the back of blade tip have more influence on stall margin. Further investigation shows there is a transition in mechanism of compressor stall with the decline of rotational speed: at high rotation speed, the expansion of stall margin mainly results from the suppression of tip leakage vortex by casing treatments, yet it benefits more from the depression of boundary layer separation from suction surface of blade tip.

The weak point of the artificial neural network(ANN) is that it is easy to fall in local minima when it learns too much nonlinear data. Accordingly, the classification ratio must be low. To overcome this weakness, the hybrid method has been proposed. That is, the ANN learns data selectively after detecting the defect position by the support vector machine(SVM). First, the SVM has been used for determination of the defect position and then the magnitude of the defect has been measured by the ANN. In off-design condition, the operation region of the engine is wide and the nonlinearity of learning data increases. The module system, dividing the whole operating region into reasonably small-size sections, has been suggested to solve this problem. In this study, the proposed algorithm has diagnosed the defects of triple components as well as single and dual components of the gas turbine engine in off-design condition.

Because of its advantages of simple structure, fast response speed, strong anti-pollution ability and good stability, high-speed solenoid valve has been widely used in aeroengine control systems, and some performances of the aeroengine control systems were affected directly by the response speed of high-speed solenoid valve. For some two-position two-way highspeed solenoid cone-valve, the paper discusses the establishment of its mathematical model and analyses its response characteristics by simulation model which is run in simulink of Matlab. Further more, a backstepping and segmentation method is used in the research of response characteristics, and the method is proved to be an accurate, fast and new method to get the influences of parameters on the valve s response characteristics.

The UAV propulsion system that will be operated for long time at more than 40,000ft altitude should have not only fuel flow minimization but also high reliability and durability. If this UAV propulsion system may have faults, it is not easy to recover the system from the abnormal, and hence an accurate diagnostic technology must be needed to keep the operational reliability. For this purpose, the development of the health monitoring system which can monitor remotely the engine condition should be required. In this study, a fuzzy trend monitoring method for detecting the engine faults including mechanical faults was proposed through analyzing performance trends of measurement data. The trend monitoring is an engine conditioning method which can find engine faults by monitoring important measuring parameters such as fuel flow, exhaust gas temperatures, rotational speeds, vibration and etc. Using engine condition database as an input to be generated by linear regression analysis of real engine instrument data, an application of the fuzzy logic in diagnostics estimated the cause of fault in each component. According to study results, it was confirmed that the proposed trend monitoring method can improve reliability and durability of the propulsion system for a long endurance UAV to be operated at medium altitude.

This paper investigates the effect of blade deformation, caused by manufacturing inaccuracies, on the performance of a 2-stage axial steam turbine. A high fidelity 3D coordinate Measurement Machine has been employed to obtain the exact geometrical model of the blades. A Streamline Curvature solver was used to predict the overall performance of the turbine. During the manufacturing process of the casts and of the blades themselves, several types of errors can occur which lead to a different geometry from that envisaged by the designer. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of those errors on the performance of a 2-stage experimental axial steam turbine. A high fidelity measurement of the actual geometry of both stator and rotor blades has been carried out, using a 3D Coordinate Measurement Machine. The cross sections of the blades obtained by the measurement were compared with those produced by the design process to evaluate the change in blade inlet/exit angles. In addition, the geometrical deviations from the initial design have been subjected to a statistical study in order to locate the nature of the error. The actual(measured) model has been used as input into a Streamline Curvature solver to evaluate its performance. Finally, a comparison with the performance plots of the original geometry has been carried out. A measurable change of efficiency as well as in the total power delivered by the turbine was found. This suggests that the accumulated error caused during the manufacturing procedure plays a significant role in the overall performance of the machine by making it less efficient by more than 1%. Reverse engineering techniques are proposed to predict and alleviate these errors leading thereby to a final design of each stage with improved performance. -
Most of engine control systems for helicopter turboshaft engines are equipped with dual sensors. For the system with dual redundancy, analytic methods are used to detect faults based on the system dynamical model. Helicopter engine dynamics are affected by aerodynamic torque induced from the dynamics of the main rotor. In this paper an engine model including the rotor dynamics is constructed for the T700-GE-700 turboshaft engine powering UH-60 helicopter. The singular value decomposition(SVD) method is applied to the developed model in order to detect sensor faults. The SVD method which do not need an additional computation to generate residual uses the characteristics that the system outputs in direction of the left singular vector if an input is applied in direction of the right singular vector. Simulations show that the SVD method works well in detecting and isolating the sensor faults.

This paper presents the development status of a subscale precooled turbojet engine "S-engine" for the hypersonic cruiser and space place. S-engine employs the precooled-cycle using liquid hydrogen as fuel and coolant. It has$23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, 2.6 m of the overall length and about 100 kg of the target weight employing composite materials for a variable-geometry rectangular air-intake and nozzle. The design thrust and specific impulse at sea-level-static(SLS) are 1.2 kN and 2,000 sec respectively. After the system design and component tests, a prototype engine made of metal was manufactured and provided for the system firing test using gaseous hydrogen in March 2007. The core engine performance could be verified in this test. The second firing test using liquid hydrogen was conducted in October 2007. The engine, fuel supplying system and control system for the next flight test were used in this test. We verified the engine start-up sequence, compressor-turbine matching and performance of system and components. A flight test of S-engine is to be conducted by the Balloon-based Operation Vehicle(BOV) at Taiki town in Hokkaido in October 2008. The vehicle is about 5 m in length, 0.55 m in diameter and 500 kg in weight. The vehicle is dropped from an altitude of 40 km by a high-altitude observation balloon. After 40 second free-fall, the vehicle pulls up and S-engine operates for 60 seconds up to Mach 2. High altitude tests of the engine components corresponding to the BOV flight condition are also conducted. -

A core engine for pre-cooled turbojet engines is designed and its component performances are examined both by CFD analyses and experiments. The engine is designed for a flight demonstration of precooled turbojet engine cycle. The engine uses gas hydrogen as fuel. The external boundary including measurement devices is set within$23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, in order to install the engine downstream of the air intake. The rotation speed is 80000 rpm at design point. Mixed flow compressor is selected to attain high pressure ratio and small diameter by single stage. Reverse type main combustor is selected to reduce the engine diameter and the rotating shaft length. The temperature at main combustor is determined by the temperature limit of non-cooled turbine. High loading turbine is designed to attain high pressure ratio by single stage. The firing test of the core engine is conducted using components of small pre-cooled turbojet engine. Gas hydrogen is injected into the main burner and hot gas is generated to drive the turbine. Air flow rate of the compressor can be modulated by a variable geometry exhaust nozzle, which is connected downstream of the core engine. As a result, 75% rotation speed is attained without hazardous vibration and heat damage. Aerodynamic performances of both compressor and turbine are obtained and evaluated independently. -
Rocket Based Combined-Cycle(RBCC) engines are currently being explored as advanced propulsion for space transportation. JAXA has been conducting RBCC engine research by using various experimental facilities. In order to clarify the experimental results and contribute to the improvement of designing, the analysis of the RBCC engine in an ejector-jet mode was carried out using the CFD code developed in-house for unstructured grids. CFD replicated the characteristic flow structures. The numerical simulation of the pumping performance of the ejector driven by different rocket gases(He,
$N_2,\;A_r$ ) and physical conditions were performed, and their effects on the performance were studied. -
An aerodynamic optimization design process of multistage axial turbine is presented in this article: first, applying quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to conduct preliminary design and then adopting modern optimization design methods to implement multistage local optimization. Quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods, which mainly refer to S2 flow surface direct problem calculation, adopt the S2 flow surface direct problem calculation program of Harbin Institute of Technology. Multistage local optimization adopts the software of Numeca/Design3D, which jointly adopts genetic algorithm and artificial neural network. The major principle of the methodology is that the successive design evaluation is performed by using an artificial neural network instead of a flow solver and the genetic algorithms may be used in an efficient way. Flow computation applies three-dimensional viscosity Navier Stokes(N-S) equation solver. Such optimization process has three features: (i) local optimization based on aerodynamic performance of every cascade; (ii) several times of optimizations being performed to every cascade; and (iii) alternate use of coarse grid and fine grid. Such process was applied to optimize a three-stage axial turbine. During the optimization, blade shape and meridional channel were respectively optimized. Through optimization, the total efficiency increased 1.3% and total power increased 2.4% while total flow rate only slightly changed. Therefore, the total performance was improved and the design objective was achieved. The preliminary design makes use of quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to achieve most reasonable parameter distribution so as to preliminarily enhance total performance. Then total performance will be further improved by adopting multistage local optimization design. Thus the design objective will be successfully achieved without huge expenditure of manpower and calculation time. Therefore, such optimization design process may be efficiently applied to the aerodynamic design optimization of multistage axial turbine.

The influence of different grids on numerical prediction of subsonic compressor performance and stall was investigated. Two types of grids were examined, structured H type grid and structured O-H type grid. Evaluations were conducted by comparing the numerical results with experimental results obtained from a low-speed single-stage rig test for a new concept compressor, called diffuser passage compressor, aiming at improving tip clearance sensitivity. At low mass flow operating conditions, the numerical calculation with O-H type grid showed that the lowest mass flow operating point for which the calculation was able to converge was almost the same as the lowest steady mass flow obtained from the rig test. On the other hand, the numerical calculation with structured H type grid diverged at higher mass flow operating point. It was found that this difference was attributed to the effect of double-valuedness of H type grid that existed at leading edge on the boundary layer development on the blade surface. -
A numerical study was performed for a vane of a compressor with a high-turning angle and meridional divergence. At first, the effect of the suction position was discussed. Then, the optimal suction position was applied to the cascades with the aspect ratio of 2.53 and 0.3, respectively, to get the knowledge of the effect of the endwall boundary layer removal on the secondary flow along the blade height. At last, using the critical principles of the three-dimensional separation, the topological structures of the flow patterns of the body surfaces and the separation configurations were discussed in detail. The results show that the largest reduction of the total loss can be achieved when the suction slot is near the suction side. The topological structure as well as the separation configuration varies due to boundary layer removal, which restrains the flow separation at the corner and delays or depresses the separation on the suction surface. Compared with the original cascade, the cascade with the endwall boundary layer removal has a higher blade loading along the most span. Furthermore the flow loss decreases and distributes uniformly along the span.

A program based on a 2-D CFD code has been developed to simulate a gas turbine engine. 2-D Navier-Stokes implicit code with
$k-\omega$ turbulent model is used in compressor and turbine. Lumped method chemical equilibrium code with 10 species of molecular is applied to combustor with assuming perfect mixture and 100% combustion efficiency at constant pressure state. Fluid properties are shared on interfaces between engine components. Compressor supplies outlet temperature and pressure to combustor. At the same time, combustor also carries temperature and pressure to turbine. The back pressure of compressor outlet is transferred by inlet pressure of turbine. Unsteady phenomena in rotor-stator are covered by mixing-plane method. The running condition of engine can be determined only by given the inlet condition of compressor, the outlet condition of turbine, equivalence ratio and rotating speed. -
An numerical investigation of the flow characteristics inside a diffusing S-duct inlet with and without vortex generators(VGs) was conducted. The primary discussion herein focuses on development of secondary flow in the S-duct with and without VGs, pressure recovery and distortion at the exit are also discussed. Full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite volume method and
$k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is employed. In order to validate the credibility of the numerical methods, predicted results of surface pressure are compared with flight test for the S-duct inlet without VGs, and it shows fairly good agreement. The result shows that VGs alter the flow characteristics in the S-duct and are effective in reducing distortion and ineffective in improving pressure recovery. -
The effects of squealer rim height on three-dimensional flows and aerodynamic losses downstream of a high-turning turbine rotor blade have been investigated for a typical tip gap-to-chord ratio of h/c=2.0%. The squealer rim height-to-chord ratio is changed to be
$h_{st}/c$ =0.00(plane tip), 1.37, 2.75, 5.51, and 8.26%. Results show that as$h_{st}/c$ increases, the tip leakage vortex tends to be weakened and the interaction between the tip leakage vortex and the passage vortex becomes less severe. The squealer rim height plays an important role in the reduction of aerodynamic loss when$h_{st}/c{\leq}2.75%$ . In the case of$h_{st}/c{\geq}5.51%$ , higher squealer rim cannot provide an effective reduction in aerodynamic loss. The aerodynamic loss reduction by increasing$h_{st}/c$ is limited only to the near-tip region within a quarter of the span from the casing wall. -
Three different geometry shapes of the blade leading edge in a centrifugal compressor were investigated in this paper. Numerical simulation was done to analyze the effect of the leading edge shape on the performance of the centrifugal compressor. The result shows that compared to the blunt leading edge, the circular leading edge will raise the chocking mass flow. The pressure ratio and efficiency will increase obviously. Using elliptical leading edge will get a further improvement on the performance than circular leading edge. The analysis of the flow field shows that the leading edge often causes flow separation near the inlet; using circular leading edge and elliptical leading edge will reduce the separation. What's more, using circular and elliptical leading edge will also reduce the wake loss near the outlet of the impeller. In a centrifugal compressor, using circular or elliptical leading edge on the splitter will improve the pressure loading distribution of main blade near the position of the splitter leading, which will increase the pressure ratio.

Gas turbine engine for aircraft are usually operated at the altitude condition which is quite different from the ground condition. In order to measure the precise performance data at the altitude condition, the engine should be tested at the altitude condition by a real flight test or an altitude simulation test with an altitude test facility. In this paper describes the design of altitude test facility for turbo shaft engine. This facility will be located in test cell #2 at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Test Cell #2 will be used for altitude testing engines with mass flow rate up to 40kg/s and inlet temperatures in the range from
$-65^{\circ}C$ to$200^{\circ}C$ . The existing compressor/exhauster station with heater & cooler system will be used to simulate altitude conditions in Test Cell #2. -

Because the types and severities of most engine faults are various and complex, it is not easy that the conventional model based fault detection approach like the GPA(Gas Path Analysis) method can monitor all engine fault conditions. Therefore this study proposed newly a diagnostic algorithm for isolating and diagnosing effectively the faulted components of the smart UAV propulsion system, which has been developed by KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute), using the fuzzy logic and the neural network algorithms. A precise performance model should be needed to perform the model-based diagnostics. The based engine performance model was developed using SIMULINK. For the work and mass flow matching between components of the steady-state simulation, the state-flow library was applied. The proposed steady-state performance model can simulate off-design point performance at various flight conditions and part loads, and in order to evaluate the steady-state performance model their simulation results were compared with manufacturer's performance deck data. According to comparison results, it was confirm that the steady-state model well agreed with the deck data within 3% in all flight envelop. The diagnosis procedure of the proposed diagnostic system has the following steps. Firstly after obtaining database of fault patterns through performance simulation, then secondly the diagnostic system was trained by the FFBP networks. Thirdly after analyzing the trend of the measuring parameters due to fault patterns, then fourthly faulted components were isolated using the fuzzy logic. Finally magnitudes of the detected faults were obtained by the trained neural networks. Because the detected faults have almost same as degradation values of the implanted fault pattern, it was confirmed that the proposed diagnostic system can detect well the engine faults.

In the jet engines on the aircrafts cruising at high altitude over 20 km and subsonic speed, the Reynolds number in terms of the compressor blades becomes very low. In such an operating condition with low Reynolds number, it is widely reported that total pressure loss of the air flow through the compressor cascades increases dramatically due to separation of the boundary layer and the secondary-flow. But the detail of flow mechanisms causes the total pressure loss has not been fully understood yet. In the present study, two series of numerical investigations were conducted to study the effects of Reynolds number on the aerodynamic characteristics of compressor cascades. At first, the incompressible flow fields in the two-dimensional compressor cascade composed of C4 airfoils were numerically simulated with various values of Reynolds number. Compared with the corresponding experimental data, the numerically estimated trend of total pressure loss as a function of Reynolds number showed good agreement with that of experiment. From the visualized numerical results, the thickness of boundary layer and wake were found to increase with the decrease of Reynolds number. Especially at very low Reynolds number, the separation of boundary layer and vortex shedding were observed. The other series, as the preparatory investigation, the flow fields in the transonic compressor, NASA Rotor 37, were simulated under the several conditions, which corresponded to the operation at sea level static and at 10 km of altitude with low density and temperature. It was found that, in the case of operation at high altitude, the separation region on the blade surface became lager, and that the radial and reverse flow around the trailing edge become stronger than those under sea level static condition.

A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the low Reynolds number on the loss characteristics in a transonic axial compressor, Rotor67. As a gas turbine becomes smaller in size and it is operated at high altitude, the operating condition frequently lies at low Reynolds number. It is generally known that wall boundary layers are thickened and a large separation occurs on the blade surface in axial turbomachinery as the Reynolds number decreases. In this study, it was found that the large viscosity did not affect on the bow shock at the leading edge but significantly did on the location and the intensity of the passage shock. The passage shock moved upstream towards leading edge and its intensity decreased at the low Reynolds number. This change had large effects on the performance as well as the internal flows such as the pressure distribution on the blade surface, tip leakage flow and separation. The total pressure rise and the adiabatic efficiency decreased about 3% individually at the same normalized mass flow rate at the low Reynolds number. In order to analyze this performance drop caused by the low Reynolds number, the total pressure loss was scrutinized through major loss categories such as profile loss, tip leakage loss, endwall loss and shock loss.

This paper describes an application of centrifugal compressor optimization system, in which the blade profile of impeller is represented with NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) curve. A commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program named NUMECA fine/turbo was used to evaluate the performance of the whole centrifugal compressor flow passage including impeller and diffuser. The whole optimization design system was integrated based on iSIGHT, a commercial integration and optimization software, which provides a direct application of some optimization algorithms. To insure the practicability of optimization, the performance of centrifugal compressor under all condition was concerned during the optimizing process. That means a compositive object function considering the aerodynamic efficiency, pressure ratio and mass flow rate under different work condition was applied by using different weight number for different conditions. Using the optimization method described in this paper, an optimized design of the impeller blade of centrifugal compressor was obtained. Comparing to the original design, optimized design has a better performance not only under the design work condition, but also the off-design work condition including near stall and near choke condition.

When the heat release and acoustic pressure fluctuations are generated in the combustor by irregular combustion, these fluctuations affect the mass flow rate of the propellants injected through the injectors. Also, the variations of the mass flow rate by these fluctuations again bring about irregular combustion and furthermore that is related with combustion instability. Therefore, it is very important to identify the mass variation for the pressure fluctuation on the injector and to investigate its transfer function. So, we first have studied quantifying the variation of mass flow rate generated in simplex swirl injector by injection pressure fluctuation. To acquire the transient mass flow rate in orifice with time, we have tried to measure of the flow axial velocity and liquid film thickness in orifice. The axial velocity is acquired through theoretical approach after measuring the pressure in orifice and the flow area in the orifice is measured by electric conductance method. As results, mass flow rate calculated by axial velocity and liquid film thickness measuring in orifice accorded with mass flow rate acquired by direct measuring method in the small error range within 1 percents in steady state and within 6 percents as average mass flow rate in pulsated state. Hence this method can be used to measure the mass flow rate not only in steady state but also in unsteady state because the mass flow rate in the orifice can acquire with time and this method shows very high accuracy based on the experimental results.

Grain design has always been a vital and integral part of Solid Rocket Motor(SRM) design. Basing on the design objectives set by the system designer, the SRM designer has many options available for selecting the Grain configuration. Many of the available configurations may fulfill the required parameters of volumetric loading fraction, web fraction & Length to diameter ratios and produce internal ballistic results that may be in accordance to the design objectives. However, for any given set of design objectives, it is deemed necessary that best possible configuration be selected, designed and optimized. Hence optimal results of all applicable configurations are vital to be attained in order to compare and finalize the design that will produce most efficient performance. Generally the engineers pay attention and have skills on a specific grain configuration. The designing methodologies and computer codes available usually focus on single grain configuration may it be Star, Wagon Wheel or slotted tube. Hardly one can find a software or a design methodology where all such configurations can be worked on jointly and not only adequate designs be found but optimal solutions reached by applying an optimization method to find final design best suited for any design objective. In the present work design requirements have been set, grain configurations have been selected and their designing has been conducted. The internal ballistic parameters have been calculated and after finding the preliminary design solutions, the optimal solutions have been found. In doing so, software has been developed comprising of computer programs for designing the 2D grains including Star, Wagon Wheel and Slotted Tube configurations. The optimization toolbox of Matlab Fmincon has been used for getting optimal solutions. The affects of all the independent geometric design variables on the optimized solutions have been analyzed. Based on results attained from Optimization Method, an in depth comparison of Grain Configurations and analysis of performance prediction outputs have been conducted to come to conclusion as to which grain configuration is ideal for the current design requirement under study.

Demonstration of Propulsion System for Microsatellite Based on Hydrogen Peroxide in SOHLA-2L ProjectAn innovative Panel ExTension SATellite(PETSAT) and propulsion system for PETSAT, are presented in this paper. First, we outline what PETSAT is. Next, based on PETSAT ethos, design policy of the propulsion system is provided. According to the policy, we designed propulsion system and concretely estimated and assembled mono-propellant and bi-propellant systems, and it indicated that mono-propellant propulsion with 50-60 seconds of specific impulse and 1 N of thrust is probable. In the case of bi-propellant, 120-150 seconds of specific impulse is valid even based on the design policy. We conducted captive tests of mono-propellant and bi-propellant propulsions with a breadboard model of propulsion system for PETSAT, and obtained good operations and performances. Based on the test results, we designed and manufactured flight model propulsion system for PETSAT. We are planning to demonstrate it in SOHLA-2L project progressed by the Space Oriented Higashiosaka Leading Association(SOHLA). SOHLA-2L will be the first on-orbit demonstrator of PETSAT in 2008.

This paper is to consider analytical thermodynamic modeling of bipropellant propulsion system. The objective of thermodynamic modeling is to predict thermodynamic conditions such as pressures, temperatures and densities in the pressurant tank and the propellant tank in which heat and mass transfer occur. In this paper also it shows analytic equations that calculate the evolution of ullage volume and interface areas. Since the ullage interface areas are time-varying,(the liquid propellant volume decreases as the rocket engine is firing; the change of ullage volume correspond to the change of liquid propellant volume) for a numerical convenience non-dimensionalized correlations are commonly used in most literatures with limitations; a few percentages of inherent error. The analytic equations are derived from analytic geometry, subsequently without inherent error. Those equations are important to calculate the heat transfer areas in the heat transfer equations. It presents the comparison result of both analytic equations and correlation method.

This paper presents the spray characteristics of the oxidizer rich preburner injector which can be used in the high-thrust rocket system. We designed the basic shape of the liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector for the rocket oxidizer rich preburner injection system. To understand the spray angle variation with the high pressure environment, the spray visualization in the high pressure chamber was preformed. Also we measured the droplet velocity, the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD), the volume flux and the number density with the PDPA system by using water in atmospheric pressure. The results show that the spray angle is reduced by increasing ambient pressure and maximum droplet velocity is shown from a nozzle tip and then the droplet velocity decreases as a spray moves to the downstream. The SMD decreases on the axial distance from 20 mm to 50 mm but it increases over 50 mm. That is due to the increasing number of collision with each droplet and interaction with ambient air on going downstream direction.

A numerical scheme for solid propellant rocket has been studied using preconditioning method to research unsteady combustion processes for the double-base propellant with a converging-diverging nozzle. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by dualtime stepping method with finite volume method. The turbulence model uses a shear stress transport modeling. The species equation follows up the method of Xinping WI, Mridul Kumar and Kenneth K. Kuo. A preconditioned algorithm is applied to solve incompressible regime inside the combustor and compressible flow at nozzle. Mass flux was evaluated using modified advective upwind splitting method. The simulated result the comparison a fully coupled implicit method and a semi implicit method in terms of accuracy and efficiency. This report shows the result of solid rocket propellant combustion.

Generation mechanisms of pressure waves from the H-IIA launch vehicle are analyzed numerically. The Mach wave radiated downstream from wavy shearlayer of supersonic exhaust plume is revealed to be the dominant noise source. Reflecting from the constructions of the launch-pad, the Mach wave turns to propagate to the vehicles. It was also found that the fluctuating supersonic plume entering into the flame duct is the dominant noise source that appears in the flame duct. Then, the pressure wave propagates through the flame duct and is ejected outside to the vehicle.

This paper presents numerical investigation of multi-phase flow in solid rocket motor nozzle and effect of multi-phases on the performance prediction of the Solid Rocket Motor. Aluminized propellants are frequently used in solid rocket motors to increase specific impulse. An Eulerian-Lagrangian description has been used to analyze the motion of the micrometer sized and discrete phase that consist of the larger particulates present in the Solid Rocket Motor. Uniform particles diameters and Rosin-Rammler diameter distribution method has been used for the simulation of different burning of aluminum droplets generating aluminum oxide smokes. Roe-FDS scheme has been used to simulate the effects of the multi-phase flow. The results obtained show the sensitivity of this distribution to the nozzle flow dynamics, primarily at the nozzle inlet and exit. The analysis also provides effect of two phases on performance prediction of Solid Rocket Motor.

The foremost criterion in the design of a Satellite Launch Vehicle(SLV) is its performance capability to boost the designated payload to the desired mission orbit; it starts from focusing on the SLV configuration to achieve the velocity requirements(
$}\Delta}V$ ) for the mission. In this paper we review an analytical approach which is suitable enough for preliminary conceptual design and is used previously to optimize stage configurations for Two Stage to Orbit SLV for Low Earth Orbit(LEO) Missions; we have extended this approach to Three Stage to Orbit SLV and compared different propellant options for the mission. The objective is to minimize the Gross Lift off Weight(GLOW). The primary performance figures of merit were the total inert weight of the SLV and the payload weight that the SLV could lift into LEO, given candidate propulsion systems. The optimization is achieved by configuring the$}\Delta}V$ between stages. A comparison of configurations of single-stage and multi-stage SLVs is made for different propellants. Based upon the optimized stage configurations a comparative performance analysis is made between Liquid and Solid fueled SLV. A 3 degree of freedom trajectory-analysis program is modeled in SIMULINK and used to conduct the performance analysis. Furthermore, a cost analysis is performed on our stage optimized SLVs. The cost estimation relationships(CER) used give us a comparison of development and fabrication costs for the Liquid vs. Solid fueled SLV in man years. The pros and cons of the production, operation ability, performance, responsiveness, logistics, price, shelf life, storage etc of both Solid and Liquid fueled SLVs are discussed. The statistics and data are used from existing or historical(real) SLV stages. -
Efficient designing of SRM Grains in the field of Rocketry is still the main test for most of the nations of world for scientific studies, commercial and military applications. There is a strong need to enhance thrust, improve the effectiveness of SRM and reduce mass of motor and burning time so as to allow the general design to increase the weight of payload/on board electronics. Moreover burning time can be increased while keeping the weight of the propellant and thrust in desired range, so as to give the time to control / general design group in active phase for incorporating delayed cut off if required. A mathematical design, optimization & analysis technique for Slotted Tube Grain has been discussed in this paper. In order to avoid the uncertainties that whether the Slotted Tube grain configuration being designed is best suited for achieving the set design goals and optimal of all the available designs or not, an efficient technique for designing SRM Grain and then getting optimal solution is must. The research work proposed herein addresses and emphasizes a design methodology to design and optimize Slotted Tube Grain considering particular test cases for which the design objectives and constraints have been given. In depth study of the optimized solution have been conducted thereby affects of all the independent parametric design variables on optimal solution & design objectives have been examined and analyzed in detail. In doing so, the design objectives and constraints have been set, geometric parameters of slotted tube grain have been identified, performance prediction parameters have been calculated, thereafter preliminary designs completed and finally optimal design reached. A Software has been developed in MATLAB for designing and optimization of Slotted Tube grains.

A pyrogen igniter was designed to satisfy the required condition of kick motor system for the space launch vehicle. We analyzed the ignition characteristics and performed the combustion tests to verify the internal ballistic performance. In the design process, the arc-image test was carried out to find the sufficient heat flux as varying the initial pressure from 10 to 700kPa. The analysis indicated that the initial pressure condition would delay ignition time within a range from 100 to 500ms. The combustion test with an inert chamber was also performed to understand the ignition characteristics with the variation of the initial pressure of free chamber volume. Finally, we confirmed that the igniter could provide the acceptable energy to ignite the propellant of kick motor at the ground test. The result of the ground tests showed that the ignition delay time was within the design range at the atmospheric pressure condition.

In the framework of COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) programme, the first bipropellant propulsion system for GEO satellite has been developed successfully. So far Korea has its own experience of development of a monopropellant propulsion system for LEO satellites, i.e., KOMPSAT's. Other types of propulsion systems for a satellite, such as cold gas and electric propulsion etc., are being developed somewhere in Korea, however they are not commercialised yet, apart from those two systems aforementioned. This paper mainly focused on the design of the Chemical Propulsion System(CPS) for the COMS, joint scientific and communications satellite. It includes descriptions of the general system design and a summary of the supporting analysis performed to verify suitability for space flight. Essentially it provides an overview and guide to the various engineering rationale generated in support of the COMS CPS design activities. The manufacture and subsequent testing of COMS CPS are briefly discussed. Feasibility of COMS CPS to an interplanetary mission is proposed as well.

We present an innovative method of multi physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, high temperature, strong shock waves and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that make it suitable for high strain rate multi-material interacting problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We heave devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress application of our integrated framework.

The influence of thermodynamic transition associated with transcritical nitrogen injection upon the flow structure was investigated to explore numerical simulation of the injectant dynamics of oxygen/hydrogen coaxial jet in liquid rocket engines. Single and coaxial nitrogen jets were treated by comparing the transcritical and perfect-gaseous conditions, wherein the numerical model was accommodative to the real-fluid thermodynamics and transport properties at supercritical pressures. The model was in the first place validated by comparing the results of transcritical nitrogen injection between calculations and available experiments. For a single jet under the transcritical condition, the nitrogen kept a relatively high density up to its pseudo-critical temperature inside the mixing layer, since it remains less expanding until heated up to its pseudo-critical temperature. Numerical analysis revealed that cryogenic jets exhibit strong dependence of specific enthalpy profile upon the associated density profile that are both dominated by turbulent thermal diffusion. In the numerical model, therefore, exact evaluation of turbulent heat fluxes becomes very important for simulating turbulent cryogenic jets under supercritical pressures. Concerning the coaxial jets due to transcritical/gaseous nitrogen injections, the density profile inside the mixing layer was again affected by the thermodynamic transition of nitrogen. However, hydrodynamic instability modes of the inner jet did not show significant differences by this thermodynamic transition, so that further study is needed for the mixing process downstream of the near injection position.

Ground-based interceptors(GBI) comprise a major element of the strategic defense against hostile targets like Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles(ICBM) and reentry vehicles(RV) dispersed from them. An optimum design of the subsystems is required to increase the performance and reliability of these GBI. Propulsion subsystem design and optimization is the motivation for this effort. This paper describes an effort in which an entire GBI missile system, including a multi-stage solid rocket booster, is considered simultaneously in a Genetic Algorithm(GA) performance optimization process. Single goal, constrained optimization is performed. For specified payload and miss distance, time of flight, the most important component in the optimization process is the booster, for its takeoff weight, time of flight, or a combination of the two. The GBI is assumed to be a multistage missile that uses target location data provided by two ground based RF radar sensors and two low earth orbit(LEO) IR sensors. 3Dimensional model is developed for a multistage target with a boost phase acceleration profile that depends on total mass, propellant mass and the specific impulse in the gravity field. The monostatic radar cross section (RCS) data of a three stage ICBM is used. For preliminary design, GBI is assumed to have a fixed initial position from the target launch point and zero launch delay. GBI carries the Kill Vehicle(KV) to an optimal position in space to allow it to complete the intercept. The objective is to design and optimize the propulsion system for the GBI that will fulfill mission requirements and objectives. The KV weight and volume requirements are specified in the problem definition before the optimization is computed. We have considered only continuous design variables, while considering discrete variables as input. Though the number of stages should also be one of the design variables, however, in this paper it is fixed as three. The elite solution from GA is passed on to(Sequential Quadratic Programming) SQP as near optimal guess. The SQP then performs local convergence to identify the minimum mass of the GBI. The performance of the three staged GBI is validated using a ballistic missile intercept scenario modeled in Matlab/SIMULINK.

Liquid hydrocarbon fuels are gathering increasing attention as candidates for a scramjet engine fuel. Experimental researches on supersonic combustion of kerosene have been conducted in model scramjet combustors. Through these works, understanding of combustion characteristics of kerosene have been revealed on some level, and so we decided to work on other kinds of liquid hydrocarbon fuels in order to explore effects of fuel properties on supersonic combustion performances, especially self-ignition and flame-holding. In addition, comparing the results of new fuels with kerosene, the relationship between fuel properties and supersonic combustion characteristics was discussed. -
Endothermic fuels are known as a probable fuel for hypersonic atmospheric flight vehicles and advanced propulsion systems, as well as cryogenic fuels. Especially, from the standpoint of the advanced regenerative cooling use, they are quite useful as a coolant fuel because of their large heat sink due to their chemical decompositions; so-called endothermic cooling effect. However, no heat transfer equations have been proposed taking into account such endothermic reactive behaviors concretely. This paper describes an analytical method for evaluation of the heat transfer rates between endothermic reacting coolant fuel and coolant-side wall in the regenerative cooling passages. Heat transfer mechanism is indicated based on a classical transport-phenomenological approach. A new relational expression of Nusselt number ratio for forcedconvective heat transfer with such endothermic reactions is also proposed by theoretical approaches using some classical hypotheses. Its applicability is assessed provisionally by comparison with confirmed results of heated tube tests for supercritical JP-7 fuel carried out at NASA Lewis Research Center, using its heat sink characteristics evaluated by United Technologies Research Center(UTRC). As a result, it has been suggested that the proposed relational equation is applicable to the evaluation of enhancement of Nusselt numbers due to such reactions in developed turbulent flows such as in the regenerative cooling passages.

The spray cross-section characteristics of two-phase spray that using external-mixing nozzle injected into a subsonic cross flow were experimentally studied with various ALR ratio that is
$0{\sim}59.4%$ . Suction type wind tunnel was used and experiments were conducted to ambient environment. Several plain orifice nozzles with L/d of 30 and orifice diameter of 0.5 mm and orifice length 1.5 mm were tested. Free stream velocity profiles at the injection location were measured using hot wire. Spray images were captured to study collision point and column trajectory. Phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) was utilized to quantitatively measuring droplet SMD, volume flux. Measuring probe of PDPA positions was moved 3-way transverse machine. SMD distributions were layered structure and peaked at the top of the spray plume and low value at bottom of the spray. Volume flux of spray was distributed to the two side region and volume flux quantity decreased when ALR ratio increased. It was found that the perpendicularly injected two-phase spray jet of external mixing into a cross flow showing that mistlike spray moved away from the test section bottom region. -
Spinning detonations propagating in a circular tube were numerically investigated with a one-step irreversible reaction model governed by Arrhenius kinetics. The time evolution of the simulation results was utilized to reveal the propagation mechanism of single-headed spinning detonation. The track angle of soot record on the tube wall was numerically reproduced with various levels of activation energy, and the simulated unique angle was the same as that of the previous reports. The maximum pressure histories of the shock front on the tube wall showed stable and unstable pitch modes for the lower and higher activation energies, respectively. The shock front shapes and the pressure profiles on the tube wall clarified the mechanisms of two modes. The maximum pressure history in the stable pitch remained nearly constant, and the single Mach leg existing on the shock front rotated at a constant speed. The high and low frequency pressure oscillations appeared in the unstable pitch due to the generation and decay of complex Mach interaction on the shock front shape. The high frequency oscillation was self-induced because the intensity of the transverse wave was changed during propagation in one cycle. The high frequency behavior was not always the same for each cycle, and therefore the low frequency oscillation was also induced in the pressure history.

In order to obtain fundamental knowledge of atomization, the three dimensional unsteady phenomenon of pinch off was numerically studied by developed method. Not only liquid shapes but also velocity distributions of numerical results were compared with corresponding experimental ones. They showed satisfactorily good agreement at least in a qualitative sense. The liquid jet shapes, the pressure and velocity distributions, and the inner flow structures were clarified through the comparisons of distinctly different flow fields due to presence or absence of surface tension. The condition of pinch off, which had close correlation with fluid acceleration at injection, was clearly specified.

A 50 N monopropellant thruster being developed for attitude control in a variety of aerospace application systems is described in this paper. Ninety percent hydrogen peroxide was selected as a propellant, since it is much less hazardous than hydrazine. A scaled down thruster with aluminum oxide loaded with the platinum in the reaction chamber was tested to determine propellant decomposition onto a catalyst. A scaled up 50 N thruster, with a catalyst bed of 3 cm in diameter and 4 cm in length, was evaluated by decomposition efficiency based on temperature,
${\eta}_T$ , efficiency of characteristic velocity,${\eta}_{C^*}$ , and measurement of thrust. The performance of a 50 N thruster was 40.5 Newton in thrust, about 100 % in${\eta}_T$ , and 98 % in${\eta}_{C^*}$ , and 125 sec in specific impulse at sea level. -
Flow pattern of cavitation around a plano-convex foil, whose shape is similar to the inducer impeller of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine, was observed by using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of blowdown type for visualization. Working fluids were liquid nitrogen and hot water. The parameter range to be varied was between 20 and 60mm for channel width, 20 and 60mm for foil chord, -1.8 and 13.2 for cavitation number, 3.7 and 19.5m/sec for averaged inlet velocity,
$8.5{\times}10^4$ and$1.5{\times}10^6$ for Reynolds number, -8 and$8^{\circ}$ for angle of attack, respectively. Especially at positive angle of attack, namely, convex surface being downstream, the whole cavity or a part of the cavity on the foil surface departs periodically. Periodic cavitation occurs only in case of smaller cavitation size than twice foil chord. Cavitation thickness and length in 20mm wide channel are larger than those in 60mm due to the wall confinement effect. Therefore, periodic cavitation in 60mm wide channel easily occurs than that in 20mm. These results suggest that the periodic cavitation is controlled by not only the hydrodynamic effect of vortex shedding but also the channel wall confinement effect. -
LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. Though chemical reaction was not accounted for, the results can be useful in determining the turbulence characteristics generated by ring and plate. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution for turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity production and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of TR shape and intrusion length did not change the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing is not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.

It is well known that helium saturated propellants significantly effects the dynamics of propulsion system, thruster cross coupling, water hammer and thruster performance. Especially for the propulsion systems, which have multiple high thrust engines, such as HTV(H-II transfer vehicle), the effect is more important. Therefore full-saturated propellants should be used at ground tests of HTV propulsion system and evaluate its effects. HTV is an advanced space vehicle being developed by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) to enhance cargo delivery capabilities of the fleet of vehicles visiting the International Space Station(ISS). This paper presents an overview of the successful effort of the testing with saturated propellants(MMH/MON3) for HTV propulsion system during the ground firing tests. -
The performance of an entire pump system composed of an inducer, an impeller, a volute and seals has been computationally analyzed. A commercial three dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes method is used in this study. The axial thrust is predicted from the pump calculation in its entirety, which is necessary for such estimation. Moreover, the effects of each component on the pump performance are investigated at a design condition through the analysis of flow structures. The predicted performance is in good agreement with experimental data in terms of head rise, efficiency and volute wall pressure distributions despite of highly complex flow structures being present. The computational results also show that the axial and radial thrusts are within the design limit although corresponding experimental measurements were not taken.

Flow instability in the rocket turbo pump system can be caused by various reasons such as valve, orifice and venturi, etc. The inception of cavitation, especially in the propellant feeding system, is the primary cause of the mass flow and pressure oscillation due to cyclic formation and depletion of cavitation. Meanwhile, the main propellant in liquid rocket engine is the cryogenic one, which is very sensitive to temperature variation, and the variation of propellant properties caused by thermodynamic effect should be accounted for in the flow analysis. The present study focuses on the formation of cryogenic cavitations by adopting IDM model suggested by Shyy and coworkers. Also, the flow instability was investigated in the downstream of orifice by using a developed numerical code. Calculation results show that cryogenic cavitations can lead to flow instability resulting in mass flow fluctuations due to pressure oscillations. And the prediction of cavitations in cryogenic fluid is of vital importance in designing feeding system of LRE.

As pulse detonation engine(PDE) does not need compression mechanisms such as compressors because self-sustained detonation waves are able to compress propellant gases by their incident shock waves, the PDE can have a simple straight-tube structure. In this study, we propose an autonomous driving valve system of the PDE, which fill premixed gases into the PDE tubes at high frequency with high mass flow rate. The proposed valve is composed of only three parts: a piston, a cylinder, and a spring. This valve system can produce intermittent flow at high mass flow rate, and also can keep stable reciprocal motion by using the propellant-gas enthalpy. When the cylinder content product is assumed to be constant, experimental results of the mass flow rate were approximately equal to the calculation model. We confirmed the autonomous driving valve performance by experiments, and concluded that this extremely simple valve with no electrical power and controller can be used as the PDE propellant supply system. -
Electroforming is one of the key technologies for the regenerative thrust chamber of the rocket engine. To use nickel electroforming method for the thrust chamber, direct electroforming of nickel on cupper and the welding method between different materials are needed. Minimizing the internal stress is one of the important factor for making thick electroforming,. Also minimizing contamination(ex. Sulfur containing compound) is another important factor for the stability of quality. This paper includes advanced methods for thick nickel electroforming, those of strength test results and EDS/EPMA inspection results. Advanced for electroforming process makes the achievement of Electro-beam welding between Inconel718(Manifold) and Nickel Electroforming. This paper also includes the influence of the electroforming precipitation angle on strength. Thus advanced electroforming improvement processes and the test results make achievement for manufacturing of the regenerative thrust chamber with direct nickel thick electroforming on cupper materials.

T-burner tests of an Al/HTPB propellant in conjunction with a Pulsed DB/AB Method were conducted to find an acoustic amplification factor. Aluminum-free and aluminum-heavy propellants were examined. Instant surface ignition was successfully made by the use of a supplementary propellant of fractionally higher reaction rate. With the presence of higher aluminum concentration in the propellants, the pressure perturbations were promptly damped down and the pressure fluctuations were no longer dispersive. Addition of aluminum particles into the propellant was advantageous for stabilizing pressure-coupled unstable waves.

Three methods of nozzle flow analysis, frozen-equilibrium, shifting-equilibrium and non-equilibrium approaches, were used to rocket nozzle flow, those were coupled with the methods of computational fluid dynamics code. For a design of high temperature rocket nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. Frozen fluid analysis presents the minimum performance of the nozzle because of no consideration for the energy recovery. On the other hand, the case of chemical-equilibrium analysis is able to forecast the maximum performance of the nozzle due to consideration for the energy recovery that is produced for the fast reaction velocity compared with velocity of moving fluid. In this study, using the chemical equilibrium flow analysis code that is combined the modified frozen-equilibrium and the chemical-equilibrium. In order to understand the thermochemical characteristic components and the accompanying energy recovery, shifting-equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the 30

With this condition, variation effects of fuel equivalence ratio, cavity, cowl setting and angle of attack were investigated. In the results, supersonic combustion was observed with low and middle fuel equivalence ratio. At high equivalence ratio, thermal choking was occurred due to the intensive reaction. Cavity and W-shape cowl showed early ignition and enhanced mixing respectively.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of three hypersonic configurations including pure liftbody configuration, pure waverider configuration and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration. Hypersonic forbodies were designed based on these configurations. For the purpose to integrate with ramjet or scramjet, all the forebodies were designed integrated with hypersonic inlet. To better understand the forebody performance, three dimensional flow field calculation of these hypersonic forebodies integrated with hypersonic inlet were conducted in the design and off design conditions. The computational results show that waverider offer an aerodynamic performance advantage in the terms of higher lift-drag ratios over the other two configurations. Liftbody offer good aerodynamic performance in subsonic region. The aerodynamic performance of the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration is not comparable to that of pure waverider in the terms of lift-drag ratios and is not comparable to that of pure liftbody in subsonic. But the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration exhibit good lateral-directional and longitudinal-directional stability characteristics. Both pure waverider and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration can provide relatively uniform flow for the inlet and offer good aerodynamic characteristics in the terms of recovery coefficient of total pressure and uniformity coefficient.

Recent activities on the scramjet and rocket-ramjet combined-cycle engine of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) are herein presented. The scramjet engines and combined-cycle engines have been studied in the world and JAXA has also studied such the engines experimentally, numerically and conceptually. Based on the studies, 2 to 3 m long, hydrogen-fueled engine models were designed and tested at the Ramjet Engine Test Facility(RJTF) and the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel(HIEST). A scramjet engine model was tested in Mach 10 to 14 flight condition at HIEST. A 3 m long scramjet engine model was designed to reduce a dissociation energy loss in a high temperature condition. Drag reduction by a tangential injection and two ways of a transverse fuel injection were examined. Combustor model tests at three operating modes of the combined-cycle engine were conducted, demonstrating the combustor operation and producing data for the engine design at each mode. Aerodynamic engine model tests were conducted in a transonic wind tunnel, demonstrating the engine operation in the ejector-jet mode. A 3 m long combined-cycle engine model has been tested in the ejector-jet mode and the ramjet mode since March 2007. Carbon composite material was examined for application to the engines. Production of the cooling channel on a nickel alloy plate succeeded by the electro-chemical etching.

The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.

The combustion efficiency of the solid fuel ramjet is affected by the inlet air temperature. And this inlet air temperature is dependent on the flight Mach number and the environment air temperature. If the flight altitude is changeable, the inlet air temperature and the air density also vary. The performance efficiency is investigated with this variables related to the combustion efficiency.

In this study, two types of ramjet intake were designed for the flight condition of Mach number 2 and 5 and numerical analysis was performed. In order to widen the flight envelope range(Mach number
$2{\sim}6$ ), movable intake concept was applied. The central body was designed so that the capture area ratio which is one of most important factors of ramjet intake design could be adjusted. And various types of cowl and movable insert part of shell were designed in order to control throat area which could increase total pressure recovery. The numerical results showed that the designed ramjet intake could be applied in various flights Mach number. -
The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomizer internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD(Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using PLLIF(Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. The objectives of this research are getting a droplet distribution and drop size measurement of each condition and compare with the other flows effect. As the result, This research have been showed the droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects and normalized distance from the injector exit length.(x/d, y/d)There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.

For the rectangular nozzle, three types of C-shaped carbon/carbon composite cowls which includes subscale model of the precooled turbojet engine are fabricated and the fine attachment to the ramp is confirmed. For the firing of the S-engine, stainless steel cowl with concrete heat insulator are fabricated and tested for 20 sec. Axisymmetric variable plug nozzle which is made of C/C material is fabricated and pressurized by the cold flow test. The axisymmetric plug nozzle can be operative up to 0.57 MPa of nozzle inlet pressure. -
This paper presents on research findings of how Visual C++ program can be used to generate codes capable of performing ramjet engine simulation To understand the diversity and applicability of this tool an arbitrary ramjet model will be considered for which generated output values will be compared with those from a commercial program GASTURB 9 iterated under the same input parameters. Several governing thermodynamic equations will first be discussed in order that we understand the fundamental idea behind values printed out on the GUI. C++ compiler was chosen as a tool of use due to its availability, ease of use, ability to compute functions faster and uniquely possible to make a stand alone GUI executable in DOS mode. The program is developed in such a way that given the ambient flight conditions, burner exit temperature and several geometry areas the program generates its own input values used in the succeeding stations. A close resemblance of output values that define performance and thermodynamic state of the engine was realized between GASTURB 9 and using this code made from C++ compiler.

The purpose of the current study is to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of two hypersonic vehicles in near space. One is derived from waverider shape, and the other from liftbody. The objective of this study are threefold. The first is to creat an computational database for hypersonic vehicle configurations. The second is to examine the effects of individual vehicle components on hypersonic configurations and to determine the differences in aerodynamic characteristics that result from integrating all vehicle components. The third objective is to evaluate the controllability of each of the fully integrated vehicles and the effectiveness of the control surface design. These objectives were accomplished using DSMC solutions and aerodynamic code developed in Northwestern Polytechnical University. The results are analyzed also in three sections. First, the results of the waverider shape and liftbody shape without integrated vehicle components are presented. Second, the results of adding aircraft components to the waverider shape and liftbody shape are presented. Finally, the aerodynamic characteristics of the fully integrated waverider-derived configuration and liftbody-derived configuration are examined and compared with those of the pure waverider shape and liftbody shape. Comparation between fully integrated waverider-derived configuration and liftbody-derived configuration are also presented in this paper.

Ramjets are capable of much higher specific impulse than liquid rocket engines for high speed flight in the atmosphere. Ramjets, however, cannot generate thrust at low flight speed. Therefore, an additional propulsion device to accelerate the ramjet vehicle to a supersonic speed is required. In this study, we propose a novel ramjet propulsion system with a
$H_2O_2$ /Kerosene rocket as the accelerator for initial stage. In order to test the feasibility of this concept, consecutive reactors was built; one for the decomposition of$H_2O_2$ and the other for kerosene combustion. Decomposed$H_2O_2$ jet was injected to combustor through converging nozzle from gas generator and over this hot oxygen jet, kerosene was injected by spay injector. Through the various test cases, hypergolic ignition test was carried out and steady combustion was achieved. -

A numerical study is conducted to investigate propulsion performance enhancement based on S225 experiment case of ISL(French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis)'s superdetonative ram accelerator. For govern equation, multi-species Navier-Stokes equation coupled with Baldwin-Lomax turbulence modeling is used. Govern equation is discretized by Roe's FDS and integrated by LU-SGS time integration. Detailed chemical reaction about
$H_2/O_2/CO_2$ for high pressure is considered.$2H_2+O_2+2.5CO_2$ mixture was used for propellant gas. For the same over-driven factor, the launching speed of computation was faster than one of S225. Another configuration and condition of S225 was applied. A flame structure is very different from S225. For strong mixture case, it shows ignition by viscous effect. Acceleration and speed increment is higher than S225 computation and experiment. By using more strong mixture, propulsion performance was enhanced. -
We present a model for simulating high energy laser heating and ignition of confined energetic materials. The model considers effect of ablation of steel plate with long laser pulses and continuous lasers of several kilowatts and the thermal response of well-characterized high explosives for ignition. Since there is enough time for the thermal wave to propagate into the target and to create a region of hot spot in the high explosives, electron thermal diffusion of ultra-short(femto- and pico-second) lasing is ignored; instead, heat diffusion of absorbed laser energy in the solid target is modeled with thermal decomposition kinetic models of high explosives are used. Numerically simulated pulsed-laser heating of solid target and thermal explosion of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine(RDX), triaminotrinitrobenzene(TATB), and octahydrotetranitrotetrazine(HMX) are compared to experimental results. The experimental and numerical results are in good agreement.

Present study examines the detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. Numerical approaches used in the previous studies of detonation wave propagation were extended to the present study with OpenMP parallelization for multicore SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.

The rocket technology has the best reliability and the high acceleration performance currently. In addition, next generation propulsion system is acquired to low cost and high payload percentage at that same time. This work is to improve the performance of Diskshaped MHD accelerator which is expected as the one of the solution. In this study we have been focusing on the swirl vane. It is so important to know that how the swirl vane contribute the plasma and its performance. As results, the gas velocities of r-component with inlet swirl were increased about over 3000m/s at the channel exit. And then static gas pressure were also reduced, we found that the case with inlet swirl gives the good influence to the acceleration performance. And the difference of the acceleration by positive and negative inlet swirl is that gas velocity of
$\theta$ -component may operate to the electric field. -

A Magneto Plasma Sail(MPS) produces propulsive force by the interaction between the solar wind and an artificial magnetic field inflated by injecting plasma. Using a 2D hybrid PIC code, we evaluate the inflation of magnetic field when Argon(Ar) plasma with different
${\beta}_{in}$ including the value less than one is injected into the dipolar magnetic field generated by a superconducting coil. It is found that the magnetic field can be inflated by injecting plasma within an angle of$30^{\circ}$ in the polar direction and the magnetic field decays in the polar direction according to$B{\propto}r^{-2.4}$ after the plasma(${\beta}_{in}$ =0.1) is injected. -

A two-dimensional particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation with a Monte-Carlo Collision(MCC) has been developed to investigate the discharge characteristics of the acceleration channel of a HET. The dynamics of electrons and ions are treated with PIC method at the time scale of electrons in order to investigate the particle transport. The densities of charged particles are coupled with Poisson's equation. Xenon neutrals are injected from the anode and experience elastic, excitation, and ionization collisions with electrons, and are scattered by ions. These collisions are simulated by using an MCC model. The effects of control parameters such as magnetic field profile, electron current density, and the applied voltage have been investigated. The secondary electron emission on the dielectric surface is also considered. -
Generally, reaction wheels or thrusters are used for attitude control of a satellite. There is a potential method for the attitude control utilizing the plasma flow on the Low Earth Orbit. In the present study, experiments which simulate attitude control of a Low Earth Orbit Satellite using the ionosphere were conducted. In this experiment, a plasma flow was generated by a steady-state Hall type accelerator. However it is known that the Hall type accelerator, which is used as plasma source, produces a torque around its axis called "swirl torque". This torque would affect the attitude control in the above-mentioned experiments. First of all, we conducted the measurement of the swirl torque. Secondly, experiments using a satellite model with negative electrodes were conducted. The negative electrodes generated torque around the axis, and controlled the attitude of the satellite model by changing the applied voltage.

Recently, the biolistic process is emerging as an effective needle-free drug delivery technique to transfer adequate concentrations of pharmacologic agents to soft living tissues with minimum side effects. We have started developing an effective method for delivering drug coated particles using laser ablation. A thin metal foil with deposited micro-particles on one side is irradiated with laser beam on the opposite side so that a shock wave is generated. This shock wave travels through the foil and is reflected, which causes and instantaneous deformation of the foil. Due to such a sudden deformation, the micro-particles are ejected at a very high speed. Here we present the experimental results of direct and confined laser ablation, which correspond to the initial stage of the whole experiment.

In spite of many experimental studies of low-power applied-field magnetoplasmadynamic(AFMPD) thrusters, thrust efficiencies of the past thrusters are very low. Hence, drastic improvement in thrust performance is required for AF-MPD thrusters to compete against other types of electric propulsion in a moderate power regime around 10 kW. For the optimization of AF-MPD thrusters, a numerical code for the flowfield simulation is now under development. A preliminary result shows that the code can deal with a complicated mixture of the induced and applied magnetic fields, which will lead to a combination of the self-field, swirl, Hall, as well as electrothermal accelerations.

A spacecraft propulsion system utilizing the energy of the solar wind was reviewed. The first plasma sail concept was proposed by Prof. Winglee in 2000, and that was called M2P2(mini-magnetospheric plasmapropulsion). However, the first M2P2 design adopting a small(20-cm-diamter) coil and a small helicon plasma source design was criticized by Dr. Khazanov in 2003. He insisted that: 1) MHD is not an appropriate approximation to describe the M2P2 design by Winglee, and with ion kinetic simulation, it was shown that the M2P2 design could provide only negligible thrust; 2) considerably larger sails(than that Winglee proposed) would be required to tap the energy of the solar wind. We started our plasma ssail study in 2003, and it is shown that moderately sized magnetic sails can produce sub-Newton-class thrust in the ion inertial scale(
${\sim}70$ km). Currently, we are continuing our efforts to make a feasibly sized plasma sail(Magnetoplasma sail) by optimizing the magnetic field inflation process Winglee proposed. -
Performance of a pulsed heat source high temperature inert gas plasma MHD electrical power generator, which can be one of the candidates of space-based laser-to-electrical power converter, is examined by a time dependent two dimensional numerical simulation. In the present MHD generator, the inert gas is assumed to be ideally heated to about
$10^4K$ pulsed-likely within short time(${\sim}1{\mu}s$ ) in a stagnant energy input volume, and the energy of high temperature inert gas is converted to the electricity with the medium of pure inert gas plasma without seeding. The numerical simulation results show that an enthalpy extraction ratio(=electrical output energy/pulsed heat energy) of several tens of % can be achieved, which is the same level as the conventional seeded non-equilibrium plasma MHD generator. Although there still exist many phenomena to be clarified and many problems to be overcome in order to realize the system, the pulsed heat source high temperature inert gas MHD generator is surely worth examining in more detail. -
Three-dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating in circular tube were investigated. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-
$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record. -
The anode sheath structure in the hollow anode of an anode-layer type Hall thruster was numerically computed using a fully kinetic 2D3V Particle-in-Cell and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(PIC-DSMC) code. By treating both ions and electrons as particles, anode surface region, which is electrically non-neutral, was analyzed. In order to analyze in detail, the calculation code was parallelized using Message Passing Interface (MPI). The code successfully simulated the discharge current oscillation. In the low magnetic induction case, ion sheath appears in the anode surface because ionization is enough to maintain the plasma occurs in the anode hollow. As the magnetic induction increases, main ionization region move to outside of the anode. At the same time, anode sheath voltage decreases. In the high magnetic induction case, electron sheath appears on the anode surface periodically because the ionization occurs mainly in the discharge channel. This anode sheath condition shift can be explained using the simple sheath model.

The objective of the present study is to actively control the flame oscillation in the experimental lean premixed methane burner by the phase-controlled sound waves. The authors propose the methodology of generating the phase-controlled sound waves by directly sensing the preferential frequency and generating the sensor-triggered sound waves with fixed optimum phase difference with the flame oscillation. The real-time controller is implemented in the present study, and the combustion noise reduction is achieved. The reduction is 20dB at peak frequency and 13dB in the OASPL.

For the purpose of improving accuracy in jet noise prediction and investigating its generation mechanism, high subsonic jets were computed by using compressible Large Eddy Simulation(LES), wherein the inflow forcing or disturbance added in the inflow shear layer was incorporated. The far-field Sound Pressure Levels(SPL) as well as the flow field resulted in good agreement with available experimental data by applying only the high azimuthal modes among the inflow forcing parameters. We found that this result was due to an important role of the inflow forcing upon breaking down the axiymmetric vortices that caused high amplitude velocity and pressure fluctuations. In order to examine generation mechanism of the dominant noise component, wavelet transformation was introduced to reveal the presence of a well-organized structure of pressure fluctuations that originated mainly from vortex motions near the end of the jet potential core. This structure took a train of alternately positive and negative wavelet-transformed pressure regions along the jet distance, spreading towards the downstream with advection and propagation. It was concluded that this structure and its dynamic motion are the reason why a high subsonic jet produces the dominant noise with a particular downstream directivity.

Experiment of active noise control on supersonic jet noise was conducted by use of microjet injection. The microjets were injected to the shear layer of the main jet through 22 small holes at the lip of a rectangular nozzle. Based on the measurement of farfield sound pressure, it was found that the jet noise was effectively reduced by several dB(in some cases up to 10 dB). The power levels of all measurement points were also reduced by use of microjet injection. The microjet affected not only the broadband noise but also the screech tone noise. The sound pressure level, the frequency of the screech tone, and the structure of the jet could be changed by the microjet. Flow visualization with schlieren technique was also made to observe the effect of microjet on the flow field.

Computational methods based on the solution of the flow model are widely used for the analysis of lowspeed, inviscid, attached-flow problems. Most of such methods are based on the implementation of the internal Dirichlet boundary condition. In this paper, the time-domain panel method uses the piecewise constant source and doublet singularities. The present method utilizes the time-stepping loop to simulate the unsteady motion of the rotary wing blade. The wake geometry is calculated as part of the solution with no special treatment. To validate the results of aerodynamic characteristics, the typical blade was chosen such as, Caradonna-Tung blade and present results were compared with the experimental data and the other numerical results in the single blade condition and two blade condition. This isolated rotor blade model consisted of a two bladed rotor with untwisted, rectangular planform blade. Computed flow-field solutions were presented for various section of the blade in the hovering mode.

The 1-D numerical study of the interior ballistics has been conducted. The unsteady compressible 1-D CFD code using SIMPLER algorithm and QUICK scheme has been developed. The mathematical model of the two-phase flow has been established for the behavior of the interior ballistics. The moving boundary due to the projectile motion as the physical phenomena of the interior ballistics results in the varied control volume. In order to analyze the moving boundary, the numerical codes, which apply the ghost-cell extrapolation method and the Lagrangian method respectively, have been developed. The ghost-cell extrapolation method has been used in the Eulerian coordinate system. The Lagrangian method has been used in Non-Eulerian coordinate system. These codes have been verified through the analysis of the free piston motion problem in the tube. Through this study, the basic techniques of the numerical code for the multi-dimensional two-phase flow of the interior ballistics have been obtained.

The effect of Pre-cooled Turbojet Engine installation and nozzle exhaust jet on Hypersonic Turbojet EXperimental aircraft(HYTEX aircraft) were investigated by three-dimensional numerical analyses to obtain aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft during its in-flight condition. First, simulations of wind tunnel experiment using small scale model of the aircraft with and without the rectangular duct reproducing engine was performed at M=5.1 condition in order to validate the calculation code. Here, good agreements with experimental data were obtained regarding centerline wall pressures on the aircraft and aerodynamic coefficients of forces and moments acting on the aircraft. Next, full scale integrated analysis of the aircraft and the engine were conducted for flight Mach numbers of M=5.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, and 2.0. Increasing the angle of attack
$\alpha$ of the aircraft in M=5.0 flight increased the mass flow rate of the air captured at the intake due to pre-compression effect of the nose shockwave, also increasing the thrust obtained at the engine plug nozzle. Sufficient thrust for acceleration were obtained at$\alpha=3$ and 5 degrees. Increase of flight Mach number at$\alpha=0$ degrees resulted in decrease of mass flow rate captured at the engine intake, and thus decrease in thrust at the nozzle. The thrust was sufficient for acceleration at M=3.5 and lower cases. Lift force on the aircraft was increased by the integration of engine on the aircraft for all varying angles of attack or flight Mach numbers. However, the slope of lift increase when increasing flight Mach number showed decrease as flight Mach number reach to M=5.0, due to the separation shockwave at the upper surface of the aircraft. Pitch moment of the aircraft was not affected by the installation of the engines for all angles of attack at M=5.0 condition. In low Mach number cases at$\alpha=0$ degrees, installation of the engines increased the pitch moment compared to no engine configuration. Installation of the engines increased the frictional drag on the aircraft, and its percentage to the total drag ranged between 30-50% for varying angle of attack in M=5.0 flight. -
The ejector is a simple device which can transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. In general, it consists of a primary driving nozzle, a mixing section, and a diffuser. The ejector system entrains the secondary flow through a shear action generated by the primary jet. Until now, a large number of researches have been made to design and evaluate the ejector systems, where it is assumed that the ejector system has an infinite secondary chamber which can supply mass infinitely. However, in almost all of the practical applications, the ejector system has a finite secondary chamber implying steady flow can be possible only after the flow inside ejector has reached an equilibrium state after the starting process. To the authors' best knowledge, there are no reports on the starting characteristics of the ejector systems and none of the works to date discloses the detailed flow process until the secondary chamber flow reaches an equilibrium state. The objective of the present study is to investigate the starting process of an ejector-diffuser system. The present study is also planned to identify the operating range of ejector-diffuser systems where the steady flow assumption can be applied without uncertainty. The results obtained show that the one and only condition in which an infinite mass entrainment is possible is the generation of a recirculation zone near the primary nozzle exit. The flow in the secondary chamber attains a state of dynamic equilibrium at this point.

The leaning angle optimization of turbine blade using the genetic algorithm was conducted in this paper. The calculation CFD technique was based upon the Diagonalized Alternating Directional Implicit scheme(DADI) with algebraic turbulence modeling. The leaning angle of VKI turbine blade was represented using B-spline curve. The control points are the design variable. Genetic algorithm was taken into account as an optimization tool. The objective was to minimize the total pressure loss. The optimized final geometry shows the better aerodynamic performance compared with the initial turbine blade.

In this paper a conventional approach for design and analysis of subsonic air vehicle is used. First of all subsonic aerodynamic coefficients are calculated using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) tools and then wind-tunnel model was developed that integrates vehicle components including control surfaces and initial data is validated as well as refined to enhance aerodynamic efficiency of control surfaces. Experimental data and limited computational fluid dynamics solutions were obtained over a Mach number range of 0.5 to 0.8. The experimental data show the component build-up effects and the aerodynamic characteristics of the fully integrated configurations, including control surface effectiveness. The aerodynamic performance of the fully integrated configurations is comparable to previously tested subsonic vehicle models. Mathematical model of the dynamic equations in 6-Degree of Freedom(DOF) is then simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK to simulate trajectory of vehicle. Effect of altitude on range, Mach no and stability is also shown. The approach presented here is suitable enough for preliminary conceptual design. The trajectory evaluation method devised accurately predicted the performance for the air vehicle studied. Formulas for the aerodynamic coefficients for this model are constructed to include the effects of several different aspects contributing to the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. Characteristic parameter values of the model are compared with those found in a different set of similar air vehicle simulations. We execute a set of example problems which solve the dynamic equations to find the aircraft trajectory given specified control inputs.

A Bubble size distribution model has been developed for the numerical simulation of cryogenic high-speed cavitating flow of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine. The new model is based on the previous one proposed by the authors, in which the bubble number density was solved as a function of bubble size at each grid point of the calculation domain by means of Eulerian framework with respect to the bubble size coordinate. In the previous model, the growth/decay of bubbles due to pressure difference between bubble and liquid was solved exactly based on Rayleigh-Plesset equation. However, the unsteady heat transfer between liquid and bubble, which controls the evaporation/condensation rate, was approximated by a theoretical solution of unsteady heat conduction under a constant temperature difference. In the present study, the unsteady temperature field in the liquid around a bubble is also solved exactly in order to establish an accurate and efficient numerical simulation code for cavitating flows. The growth/decay of a single bubble and growth of bubbles with nucleation were successfully simulated by the proposed model.

A projectile when passes through a moving shock wave, experiences drastic changes in the aerodynamic forces as it moves from a high-pressure region to a low pressure region. These sudden changes in the forces are attributed to the wave structures produced by the projectile-flow field interaction, and are responsible for destabilizing the trajectory of the projectile. These flow fields are usually encountered in the vicinity of the launch tube exit of a ballistic range facility, thrusters, retro-rocket firings, silo injections, missile firing ballistics, etc. In earlier works, projectile was assumed in a steady flow field when the computations start and the blast wave maintains a constant strength. However, in real situations, the projectile produces transient effects in the flow field which have a deterministic effect on the overtaking process. In the present work, the overtaking problem encountered in the near-field of muzzle guns is investigated for several projectile Mach numbers. Computations have been carried out using a chimera mesh scheme. The results show that, the unsteady wave structures are completely different from that of the steady flow field where the blast wave maintains a constant strength, and the supersonic and subsonic overtaking conditions cannot be distinguished by identifying the projectile bow shock wave only.

We performed numerical analysis of base drag phenomenon, when a projectile with backward step flies into atmosphere at supersonic speed. We compared with other researchers. From our previous studies that were 2-dimensional simulation, we found out from sophisticated simulations that need dense mesh points to compare base pressure and velocity profile after from base with experimental data. Therefore, we focus on high order spatial disceretization over 3rd order with TVD such as MUSCL TVD 3rd, 5th, and WENO 5th order, and Limiters such as minmod, Triad. Moreover, we enforce to flux averaging schemes such as Roe, RoeM, HLLE, AUSMDV. In present, one dimensional result of Euler tests, there are Sod, Lax, Shu-Osher and interacting blast wave problems. AUSMDV as a flux averaging scheme with MUSCL TVD 5th order as spatial resolution is good agreement with exact solutions than other combinations. We are carrying out the same approaches into 3-dimensional base flow only candidate flux schemes that are Roe, AUSMDV. Additionally, turbulence models are used in 3-dimensional flow, one is Menter s SST DES model and another is Sparlat-Allmaras DES/DDES model in Navier-Stokes equations.

Monitoring data of pressure pulsation in the turbine is obtained through experiment and is compared with the numerical simulation. And a good coherence is shown between the simulation and the experiment. Then the regularity of the pressure pulsation s distribution and transmission in the turbine is discussed in detail. -
The traditional method to calculate the gravity feed is to assume that only one tank in fuel system supplies the needed fuel to the engine, and then calculated for the single branch. Actually, all fuel tanks compete for supplying oil. Our method takes into consideration all fuel tanks and therefore, we believe, our method is intrinsically superior to traditional methods and is closer to understanding the real seriousness of the oil supply situation. Firstly, the thesis gives the mathematical model for fuel flow pipe, pump, check valve and the simulation model for fuel tank. On the basis of flow network theory and time difference method, we established a new calculation method for gravity feed oil of aeroplane fuel system, secondly. This model can solve the multiple-branch and transient process simulation of gravity feed oil. Finally, we give a numerical example for a certain type of aircraft, achieved the variations of oil level and flow mass per second of each oil tanks. In addition, we also obtained the variations of the oil pressure of the engine inlet, and predicted the maximum time that the aeroplane could fly safely under gravity feed. These variations show that our proposed method of calculations is satisfactory.

Methods for the solution of linear stability for compressible boundary layers are developed. Both the global and local methods for stability analysis are used. Both methods are use in solution of Coutte shear flow and the results are analysis and compare. Some well-known conclusions of Coutte flow are proved by these methods again.

Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).

During the rapid startup transient of a centrifugal pump, in order to investigate its transient characteristics, the torque equations are deduced. Based on these equations, numerical simulation is carried out with the Large Eddy Simulation(LES) method and UDFs(User Defined Functions) are applied during the simulation. Comparison between simulation and experiment results of pump heads and rotational speed shows that they are in good agreement, indicating that the dynamic characteristics of this pump can be predicted accurate comparatively through simulation with LES method during its startup process.

The report presents turbulent Navier Stokes computations on twin engine afterbody model with jet exhaust. The computations are carried out for free-stream Mach number of 0.8 to 1.20 and jet pressure ratio of 3.4 to 7.8. The Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is used in the computations. Comparison is made with experimental data and Cp distribution around the afterbody is found to agree well with experiments. Flow features of the exhaust jet like under expansion, over expansion, Mach discs, etc are well captured. The effect of nozzle pressure ratio and flight Mach number are studied in detail. These computations serve as validation of the in-house code for twin jet afterbody.

This paper reports on the internal flow of a centrifugal mini pump working at the low flow rate operating conditions. The RNG
$\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed to simulate the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the pump. To examine and certify the simulation results, a transparent acrylic centrifugal mini pump model which is suitable for PIV measurement has been developed. The tongue region and the passages region between blades were investigated using PIV. In order to eliminate the effect of refraction on the area closed to the wall and increase the measurement accuracy, the fluorescent particles were scatted into the working fluid with the tracing particles. It is found from the calculation and PIV measurement results that there is a large area of recirculation flow near the tongue at low flow rate operating conditions. The computationally predicted water head using the$\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model at low flow rate operating conditions are in very good agreement with the experimentally measured water head and the mean velocity distributions at investigation area obtained by PIV and calculation showed a satisfactory agreement as well. Meanwhile, the results of PIV measurements show that the flow status in one passage is different to another. And for capturing the internal flow detail information, the$\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is not very suitable. -
The fluorescence ratio method for processing planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF) data was generalized for quantitative imaging of the injectant mole-fraction in supersonic mixing flowfields. The original fluorescence ratio approach was introduced by Hartfield et al. for tests in a special closed-loop wind tunnel to eliminate the effects of thermodynamic property variations in compressible flowfields and to provide a quantitative means of mole-fraction measurement. However, they implicitly assumed that the tracer molecules were seeded at the same fraction in both main and secondary flows. In the present study, we proposed generalizing the Hartfield method by considering differences in the tracer seeding rates. We examined the generalized method in a mixing flowfield formed by sonic transverse injection into a Mach 1.8 supersonic air stream. The injectant molefraction distribution obtained from PLIF data processed by our new approach showed better agreement with the gas chromatograph than one based on the Hartfield method.

Counter-rotating axial flow fan(CRF) consists of two counter-rotating rotors without stator blades. CRF shows the complex flow characteristics of the three-dimensional, viscous, and unsteady flow fields. For the understanding of the entire core flow in CRF, it is necessary to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow field between the rotors. This information is also essential to improve the aerodynamic characteristics and to reduce the aerodynamic noise level and vibration characteristics of the CRF. In this paper, experimental study on the three-dimensional unsteady flow of the CRF is performed at the design point(operating point). Flow fields in the CRF are measured at the cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor using the
$45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. The phase-locked averaged hot-wire technique utilizes the inclined hot-wire, which rotates successively with 120 degree increments about its own axis. Three-dimensional unsteady flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow in the CRF are shown in the form of the axial, radial and tangential velocity vector plot and velocity contour. The phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the CRF are analyzed by means of the stationary unsteady measurement technique. At the mean radius of the front rotor inlet and the outlet, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles show more the periodical flow characteristics than those of the hub region. At the tip region of the CRF, the axial velocity is decreased due to the boundary layer effect of the fan casing and the tip vortex flow. The radial and the tangential velocity profiles show the most unstable and unsteady flow characteristics compared with other position of rotors. But, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the downstream of the rear rotor show the aperiodic flow pattern due to the mixture of the front rotor wake period and the rear rotor rotational period. -
The possibility of manufacturing titanium hollow cylinder tank for ramjet engine was demonstrated with superplastic forming of subscale article. An innovative manufacturing method to produce complex configuration from titanium multi-sheets by low hydrostatic pressure was presented. Finite element analysis on superplastic blow forming process has been carried out in order to improve the forming process when manufacturing subscale hollow cylinder structure using Ti-6Al-4V multi-sheets. The simulation focused on the reduction of forming time and obtaining finally required shape throughout investigating the deformation mode of sheet according to the forming conditions and die geometry. From pre-sized titanium sheets, near net shape of hollow cylinder tank is obtained by superplastic blow forming conducted using gas pressure of 15bar at 1148K. The result shows that the manufacturing method with superplastic forming of multi-sheets of titanium alloy has been successful for near net shape forming of subscale hollow cylinder tank of ramjet engine.

In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9
$MW/m^2$ . No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected. -
Previously study on structural design of the main wing of the twenty-seat class WIG(Wing in Ground Effect) craft. In the final design, three spars construction was selected for safety in the critical flight load, and the Carbon-Epoxy material was selected for lightness and structural stability. In this study, the forced vibration analysis was performed on the composite main wing structure of the twenty-seat class WIG craft with two-stroke pusher type reciprocating engine. The vibration analysis based on the finite element method was performed using a commercial FEM code, MSC/NASTRAN. Excitations for the frequency response analysis were assumed as the H-mode(horizontal mode), the V-mode(vertical mode) and the X-mode(twisted mode) which are typical main vibration modes of engine. And excitations for the transient response analysis were assumed as the L-mode(longitudinal mode) with the oscillating propeller thrust which occurs in operation. According to the result of forced vibration analysis, structural design was modified to reduce the vibrations.

The present work has been developed the interpretation processor including analysis of the failure stress in pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device, which has the release characteristic without fragmentation and pyro-shock, using SoildWorks, COSMOS Works and ANSYS programs. The aim of the invention is to propose a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. The pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device according to the invention is simple, compact and inexpensive in structure. It is simple to implement and permit the use of only a reduced quantity of pyrotechnic composition, such composition possibly being devoid of any primary explosive at all. The present work is only focused on the design of structure and the material characteristics. To analyze the fracture morphology resulted from tensile test in the different ball type bolts, the present work has been performed to estimate the failure stress of material and to make the same result from tensile test. The failure stress of SUS 630 in ductile material is approximately 1050 Mpa. The failure stress of SUS 420 in brittle material is about 1790 Mpa. Among the models used the ductile material, the model 6 is suitable a design of structure compared to that of other models. The use of this interpretation processor developed the present work could be extensively helped to estimate the failure stress of material having a complex geometry such as the ball type bolt

The effects of blade leading edge sweep on both the aerodynamic performance and the structure stress of a high pressure centrifugal compressor impeller are numerically investigated. Changes in the flow structure occur as a result of the effect of leading edge sweep on the loading distribution in the tip region. The flow separation is avoided by introducing a sweep of the main blade leading edge and the strength of shock is reduced at the same time. Backswept of the leading edge is found to be beneficial to the impeller performance improving. On the other hand, the structural analysis indicated that high rotating speed of the impeller will cause substantial high bending stresses and radial deflections of the blade. Studies have shown that it is possible to control the stress distribution along the tip and root of the blade by slight adjustments to the sweep angle of the leading edge. These adjustments may be used to design the impeller with lower blade root stress distribution without aerodynamics performance penalty.

To develop an engineering-model of hydrogen-fueled ultra-micro combustor for Ultra Micro Gas Turbine(UMGT), we reviewed and summarized the problems in downsizing combustors, and determined a suitable burning method. The key issue to actualize practical ultra-micro combustors is reducing heat loss from the combustor to compressor and turbine. The reduction of heat loss was discussed from 3 different viewpoints; heat-insulation material, high-space-heating-rate combustion, and combustor-insolated gas turbine structure. Use of heat-insulation material induced the heat loss reduction to the surroundings. The heat loss ratio decreased substantially in reverse proportion to space heating rate, leading the idea that it could be reduced by burning at a high space heating rate. By settling the combustor insolated from the compressor and turbine, the heat transfer from the combustor to the compressor and turbine becomes smaller. For a selection of the suitable burning method, comparison between 2 burning methods, flat-flame and swirling-flamer types, was conducted. Synthetically the flat-flame burning method was confirmed to be more suitable for ultra-micro combustors than latter one. Base on them, an engineering-model of hydrogen-fueled flat-flame ultra-micro combustor was developed. To obtain high overall heat-insulation, heat-resistant and strength, the engineering-model combustor had triple layer structure with an advanced ceramic, a heat insulation material and a stainless steel. To simplify heat transfer issue in the combustor, it was isolated from the other components. Furthermore it was designed by considering structure, size, material, velocity, pressure loss and prevention of flashback.

Propulsion of gene coated micro-particles is desired for non-intrusive drug delivery inside biological tissue. This has been achieved by the development of a device that uses high power laser pulses. The present paper looks at the mechanisms of micro-particle acceleration. Initially, a high power laser pulse is focused onto the front side of a thin aluminium foil leading to its ablation. The ablation front drives a compression wave inside the foil, thus leading to the formation of a shock wave, which will later reflect from the rear side of the foil, due to acoustic impedance mismatch. The reflected wave will induce an opposite motion of the foil, characterized by a very high speed, of the order of several millimeters per microsecond. Micro-particles, which are deposited on the rear side of the foil, thus get accelerated and ejected as micro-projectiles and are able to penetrate several hundreds of micrometers inside tissue-like material. These processes have been observed experimentally by using high-speed shadowgraphy and considered analytically.

We have been developing a 1500N-thrust Swirling-Oxidizer-Flow-Type hybrid rocket engine. In order to put the engine into practical use, we conducted long duration burning experiments up to 25s to examine the influence of configuration change of fuel grain on the engine performance and designed an LOX vaporization nozzle to supply GOX for the 1500N-thrust engine. The experiment with a small hybrid rocket engine showed that combustion was stable and the engine performance was approximately constant during combustion. There was no essential problem to with increasing combustion time. The LOX vaporization nozzle designed had 30 rectangular channels with a depth of 0.5mm. During passing through the nozzle, the LOX increased in temperature and vaporized sufficiently.

Micro wave rotor is expected to improve the performance of micro gas turbines drastically. In the present study, a micro wave rotor test rig was designed and built for micro gas turbines of 1-10 kW output range, and its test runs were carried out with cold air flow. In the previous experiments, the leakage loss had large influence on its operating condition. Therefore, abradable coating was applied on the end walls to achieve the operation with zero clearance for leakage reduction and its improvement on the operating condition is discussed in this study.

Wireless energy supply for an MAV propulsion system using microwave was developed. This system consists of three sub system; the transmitter system, the rectenna system, and the tracking system. In the transmitter system five horn antennas were used as the antenna elements for the phased array system and both the beam divergence and steering angle was about 9deg. Eight rectennas were arrayed in parallel to obtain enough power to drive the electric motor on the MAV(the voltage was 250mV and the current was 6.8mA) in rectenna system. In tracking system two units of antenna system with leaf pattern which received the linearly-polarized wave despite the MAV yaw angle were set in each axis(x, y) for tracking an MAV in a 2-Dimentional space. And three output voltages
$V_{com},\;V_1$ and$V_2$ were loaded in the PC to detect if the distance between transmitter and receiver was not constant. Finally when the microwave beam was steered by the phased array system the output voltage from rectenna was measured at 62cm while the MAV circled around above the transmitter system. -
In this study, we designed cold gas propulsion system with minimum 0.25 mm nozzle and micro-thrust measurement system to analyze flow characteristic of micro propulsion system in ambient and vacuum condition. Argon and Nitrogen are used for propellant and the result of experiments is compared with CFD analysis and theory. But there is a point where reduced scale versions of conventional propulsion systems will no longer be practical. Therefore, a fundamentally different approach to propulsion systems was taken. That is thermal transpiration based micro propulsion system. It has no moving parts such as lubricants, pressurizing system and can pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only(cold to hot). We are advancing basic research of propulsion system based on thermal transpiration in vacuum conditions and had tried experiment process and theoretical access in advance. To characterize membrane of Knudsen pump, we select Polyimide material that has low thermal conductivity(0.29 W/mK) and can stand high temperature(
$300^{\circ}C$ ) for long time. And we fabricated hole diameter 1, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1 mm using precision manufacturing. Experimental results show that pressure gradient efficiency of Knudsen pump is increased to maximum 82% according to Knudsen number and thick membranes are more effective than thin membranes in transition flow regime. -
The blade vibration problem of bladed disk is the most critical subject to consider since it directly affects the stable performance of the engine as well as life of the engine. Especially, due to complicated vibration pattern of the bladed disk, more effort was required for vibration analysis and test. The research of measuring the vibration of the bladed disk, using NSMS(Non-intrusive stress measurement) instead of Aeromechanics testing method requiring slip ring or telemetry system with strain gauge, was successful. These testing can report the actual stresses seen on the blades; detect synchronous resonances that are the source of high cycle fatigue(HCF) in blades; measure individual blade mis-tuning and coupled resonances in bladed disks. In order to minimize the error being created due to heat expansion, the tip timing sensor is installed parallel to the blade trailing edge, yielding optimal result. Also, when working on finite element analysis, the whole bladed disk has gone through three-dimensional analysis, evaluating the family mode. The result of the analysis matched well with the test result.

In this article, in order to fabricate polymer based electrospray device with super hydrophobic nozzle we use PTFE(polyfluorotetraethylene) plate and PMMA(polymethylmethacrylate). To obtain the super hydrophobic surface nozzle, PTFE surface is treated by argon and oxygen plasma treatment process. And evaluate the treated surface, perform measuring contact angle, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and AFM(Atomic Force Microscope). We compare the performance of the super hydrophobic PTFE surface nozzle with raw PTFE and PMMA surface nozzle. For the ion beam treated PTFE nozzle, the liquid doesn't overflow and it keeps initial position and meniscus shape. From these results, we expect in cease of superhydrophobic surface nozzle jetting becomes more stable and repeatable.

A survey is offered of the present status of microaluminized propellants industrially used worldwide in most space applications, but new directions are also pointed out making profitable use of the nanoaluminized propellants currently tested in many laboratories. Different industrial- and research-type of solid rocket propellants, mainly but not only, of the well-known family oxidizer/Al/HTPB(oxidizer being AP, AN or a mixture of the two) were experimentally analyzed at the Space Propulsion Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano. In general, they feature the same nominal composition but implement different grain size distributions of the oxidizer or metal fuel. The basic properties of all formulations were compared to that of a standard propellant already certified for flight.
