  • Our research objectives are to determine under what conditions microalgal-based $CO_2$capture from flue gases is economically attractive. Specifically, our objective here was to select microalgae that are temperature, pH and flue gas tolerant. Microalgae were grown under five different temperatures, three different pH and five different flue gas mixtures besides 100% $CO_2$(gas concentrations that the cells were exposed to ranged 5.7-100% $CO_2$, 0-3504ppm SO$_2$, 0-328ppm NO, and 0-126ppm NO$_2$). Our results indicate that the microalgal strains tested exhibit a substantial ability to withstand a wide range of temperature (54 strains tested), pH (20 strains tested) and flue gas composition (24 strains tested) likely to be encountered in cultures used for carbon sequestration from smoke stack gases. Our results indicate that microalgal photosynthesis is a limited but viable strategy for $CO_2$capture from flue gases produced by stationary combustion sources.

  • Attrition characteristics of $CO_2$ absorbents for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture were investigated to check attrition loss of those absorbents and to determine solid circulation direction and the better $CO_2$ absorbent. The cumulative attrition losses of two absorbents increased with increasing time. However, attrition loss under a humidified condition was lower than that under a non-humidified condition case. Between two absorbents, attrition loss of PKM1-SU absorbent was higher than that of P4-600 absorbent. The average particle sizes of the attrited particles were less than $2.5{\mu}m$ for two absorbents under a non-humidified condition case, and therefore, we could conclude that the main mechanism of attrition for two absorbents is not fragmentation but abrasion. Based on the results from the test for the effect of humidity on the attrition loss, we selected solid circulation direction from SEWGS reactor to regeneration reactor because the SEWGS reactor contains more water vapor than regeneration reactor. Attrition loss and make-up rate of two absorbents were compared based on the results from $CO_2$ sorption capacity tests and attrition tests. Required make-up rate of P4-600 absorbent was lower than that of PKM1-SU absorbent. However, more detail investigation on the optimum regeneration temperature, manufacturing cost, solid circulation rate, regeneration rate, and long-term sorption capacity should be considered to select the best $CO_2$ absorbent.

  • A gasification process with pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture process, which converts coal into environment-friendly synthetic gas, might be promising option for sustainable energy conversion. In the coal gasification for power generation, coal is converted into $H_2$, CO and $CO_2$. To reduce the cost of $CO_2$ capture and to maximize hydrogen production, the removal of CO and the additional production of hydrogen might be needed. In this study, a 2l/min water gas shift system for a coal gasifier has been studied. To control the concentration of major components such as $H_2$, CO, and $CO_2$, MFCs were used in experimental apparatus. The gas concentration in these experiments was equal with syngas concentration from dry coal gasifiers ($H_2$: 25-35, CO: 60-65, $CO_2$: 5-15 vol%). The operation conditions of the WGS system were $200-400^{\circ}C$, 1-10bar. Steam/Carbon ratios were between 2.0 and 5.0. The commercial catalysts were used in the high temperature shift reactor and the low temperature shift reactor. As steam/carbon ratio increased, the conversion (1-$CO_{out}/CO_{in}$) increased from 93% to 97% at the condition of CO: 65, $H_2$: 30, $CO_2$: 5%. However the conversion decreased with increasing of gas flow and temperature. The gas concentration from LTS was $H_2$: 54.7-60.0, $CO_2$: 38.8-44.9, CO: 0.3-1%.

  • Owing to the abnormal weather conditions due to global warming, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has attracted global attention as a countermeasure to reduce CO2 emissions. In the Pohang CCS demonstration project in South Korea, 100 tons of CO2 were successfully injected into the subsurface CO2 storage in early 2017. However, after the 2017 Pohang earthquake, the Pohang CCS demonstration project was suspended due to an increase in social concerns about the safety of the CCS project. In this study, to reconfirm the structural suitability of the CO2 storage site in the Pohang Basin, we employed seismic imaging based on reverse-time migration (RTM) to analyze small-scale ocean-bottom seismic data, which have not been utilized in previous studies. Compared with seismic images using marine streamer data, the continuity of subsurface layers in the RTM image using the ocean-bottom seismic data is improved. Based on the obtained subsurface image, we discuss the structural suitability of the Pohang CO2 storage site.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical and carbon-capture properties of foam concrete containing stainless steel argon oxygen decarbonization(AOD) slag. AOD slag was used as a binder, and foam concrete having a foaming ratio of 69 ± 0.5 % and a slurry density of 573.2 to 578.6 kg / ㎥ was produced. In order to examine the effect of carbonation, blended specimen was cured by two types : normal curing and CO2 curing. As a result of the experiment, the specimens incorporating AOD slag showed higher compressive strength than Plain after CO2 curing. According to the analysis of the image of foam concrete, it was confirmed that the ST30 has a lower total pore volume and average pore size than plain, resulting in high compressive strength. The SEM analysis confirmed the formation of calcite by carbonation of AOD slag. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, the increase of CO2 uptake was confirmed by the incorporation of AOD slag. Foam concrete has a higher porosity than normal concrete, so it is expected that carbon-capture performance can be improved by using a AOD slag.

  • To enhance the performance of SEWGS system by holding the WGS catalyst in a SEWGS reactor using bed inserts, effects of insert geometry and shape of WGS catalysts on CO conversion were measured and investigated. Small scale fluidized bed reactor was used as experimental apparatus and WGS catalyst (particle and tablet) and sand were used as bed materials. The parallel wall type and cross type bed inserts were used to hold the WGS catalysts. The CO conversion with steam/CO ratio was determined based on the exit gas analysis. The measured CO conversion using the bed inserts showed high value comparable to physical mixing cases. Moreover, gas flow direction was confirmed by bed pressure drop measurement for each case. Most of input gas flowed through the catalyst side when we charged tablet type catalyst into the bed insert and this can cause low $CO_2$ capture efficiency because the possibility of contact between input gas and $CO_2$ absorbent is low in this case. New bed insert geometry was proposed based on the results from this study to enhance contact between input gas and WGS catalyst and $CO_2$ absorbent.

However, the spring type bed insert showed good reactivity and good distribution of gas, and therefore, the spring type bed insert was selected as the best bed insert for SEWGS process.

  • The Korean government attempts to reduce $CO_2$ emissions by 37% to 314.7 Mt $CO_2$, down from the estimated 850.6 Mt $CO_2$ until 2030 in order to confront green house effect. In this context, in 2014, Korean government launched $CO_2$ Storage Environmental Management Research (K-COSEM) Center for carrying out pilot-scale research on $CO_2$ leakage from underground $CO_2$ storage facilities. For the detection of $CO_2$ leakage, it is necessary to identify hydrologeological and geophysical characteristics of the subject area. In the study site of Naesan-ri, Daeso-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungbuk Province, two times injection tests (June 28-July 24, 2017 and August 07-September 11, 2017) of $CO_2$ and $SF_6$ dissolved waters, respectively, was conducted to understand the leakage behavior of $CO_2$ from underground. The injection well was drilled to a depth of 24 m with a 21-m casing and screen interval of 21~24 m depth. Two times resistivity surveys on August 18, 2017 and September 1, 2017, were conducted for revealing the flow of the injected water as well as the electrical properties of the study site. The study results have shown that the high-resistivity zone and the low-resistivity zone are clearly contrasted with each other and the flow direction of the injected water is similar to natural groundwater flow. Besides, the low resistivity zone is widely formed from the depth of injection to the shallow topsoil, indicating that the weathered zone of high permeability has high $CO_2$ leakage potential.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of postural sway on the kinematic variables of the putter head during golf putting and to provide information to the importance of postural sway control in the putting stroke for novice golfers. Method: The center of pressure (CoP) and Kinematics variables of the putter head were calculated during 2 m flat golf putting using 8 motion capture cameras (250 Hz) and 2 force plate (1,000 Hz). SPSS 24.0 was used to perform Pearson's correlation coefficient and simple regression analysis, and the statistically significance level was set to .05. Results: As a result of analyzing the correlation between CoP variables and the putter head rotation angle, the CoP moving length, CoP moving range (ML direction), and CoP moving velocity (ML direction) showed a positive correlation with the putter head rotation angle (yaw axis) and were statistically significant. Conclusion: Therefore, In order to perform the accurate putting stroke maintaining the ball's directionality, it is determined that it is important to control posture sway in the ML directions by minimizing the movement and velocity of the CoP.

  • Limitation of photosynthesis in detached Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) leaves was induced by feeding of mannose (25 mM) for 12 h in the light, and changes in the basic thylakoid functions under this condition were investigated. The acid soluble phosphate contend and CO2 uptake rate was decreased by 66% and 67%, respectively. However, the starch content was increased by 24% compared to those of controls. From the fast induction curves of chlorophyll fluorescence, dark level fluorescence (Fo) slightly increased while intermediate plateau fluorescence level (FI) to peak level fluorescence (Fp) transient was significantly decreased with a slight decrease in the Fo-to-FI transient. This data means that reduction of secondary electron acceptor of PSII (QB) might be more severely inhibited than that of primary electron acceptor of PSII (QA) by decrease in phosphate level. The strong decline of (Fv)m//Fm ratio suggests that efficiency of excitation energy capture by PSII was decreased markedly. The quenching of Fo (qO), an indicator of state transition, was also occurred over the slow induction kinetics of chlorophyll fluorescence. From quenching analysis, fluorescence was dominantly quenched by nonphotochemical quenchings (qE+qT). These results showed that the capture and transfer efficiency of excitation energy to PSII reaction center in thylakoid was decreased with the decline of leaf phosphate level, and that the state transition was occurred during the induction of photosynthesis under these conditions.
