The oxidation of Fe-(21.8, 24.1, 27.2)%Al intermetallics (Fe-(21.8, 24.1, 27.2)%Al 금속간 화합물의 고온 산화)

  • Pure $Fe_3$Al alloys with three different compositions of Fe-21.8%Al, Fe-24.1%Al and Fe-27.2%Al were prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by homogenization and hot forging. The long-time oxidation behavior of the prepared alloys was studied at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air. The oxidation resistance greatly increased with an increase in Al contents. Thin and uniform oxide scales were always formed on Fe-27.2%Al, while thick and fragile oxide scales were formed on Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al. Internal oxidation was observed in Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al, when oxidized above 1273K. The major oxidation product of all the oxidized alloys was always $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$.

  • Cross-shape structures of spin tunneling junctions were fabricated using DC magnetron sputtering and metal masks. The film structures were $substrate/Ta/NiFe/FeMn/NiFe/CoFe/Al_2O_3/CoFe/NiFe$ and $substrate/Ta/NiFe/CoFe/ Al_2O_3/CoFe/NiFe/FeMn/NiFe$. Fabrication conditions of insulating layer ($Al_2O_3$) and thickness and sputtering power of each film layer were varied, and maximum magnetoresistance ratio of 24.3 % was obtained. Magnetic characteristic variations in the above mentioned two structures and two types of substrates (Corning glass 7059 and Si(111)) were compared. Annealing of the junctions was performed to find out magnetic characteristic variations expected from the device fabrication. Magneoresistance Ratio were observed to maintain as-deposited value up to 150 $^{\circ}C$ annealing and then to drop rapidly after 180 $^{\circ}C$ annealing.

  • The sulfidation behaviour of Fe-XAl-0.3Y(X=5, 10, 14, 25 $wt.\%$) alloys was investigated at 1123 K in $H_2/H_{2}S$ gas atmosphere for $1\sim24$ hrs using SEM/EDX, XRD and EPMA. The weight changes of Fe-XAl-0.3Y alloys followed the parabolic rate law, Sulfidation rates of iron aluminide alloys with high Al content were one-twentieth lower than that of 5Al alloys. This is due to the formation of protective $Al_{2}O_3$ oxides on the surface of 10Al, 14Al and 25Al alloys. By calculating partial pressure of impurity oxygen contained $H_2/H_{2}S$ gas, the $Al_{2}O_3$ oxides formation could be explained using Fe-Al-S-O thermodynamic stability diagram. The sulfidation product scales of the 5Al alloy showed that thick iron sulfide scale(FeS) containing porosities formed during early stages of sulfidation. With continued sulfidation, aluminum sulfide was formed at the alloy/scale interface.

Nano-Granular Co-Fe-AI-O Soft Ferromagnetic Thin Films for GHz Magnetic Device Applications

  • Co-Fe-Al-O nanogranular thin films were fabricated by RF-magnetron sputtering under an $Ar+O_2$ atmosphere. High resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that the Co-Fe-Al-O films are composed of bcc (Co, Fe) nanograins finer than 5 nm and an Al-O amorphous phase. A very large electrical resistivity of $374{\mu}{\Omega}cm$ was obtained, together with a large uniaxial anisotropy field of 50 Oe, a hard axis coercivity of 1.25 Oe, and a saturation magnetization of 12.9 kG. The actual part of the relative permeability was measured to be 260 at low frequencies and this value was maintained up to 1.3 GHz. The ferromagnetic resonance frequency was 2.24 GHz. The resulting Co-Fe-Al-O nanogranular thin films with a high electrical resistivity and high resonance frequency are considered to be suitable for GHz magnetic device applications.

  • The oxidation behaviour of Fe-XAl-0.1Y(X= 5, 10, 14 wt.%) alloys were investigated at 1073, 1173 and 1273 K in oxygen/ nitrogen gas atmosphere for 1∼24 hrs using SEM/EDX, XRD and EPMA. The weight changes of Fe-XAl-0.1Y alloys followed the parabolic rate law. Oxidation rates of 10Al and 14Al alloys were ten times lower than that of 5Al alloys. This is attributed to the formations of protective $A1_2$$O_3$oxides on the surface of 10Al and 14Al alloys.   • The efects of mechanical aloying conditions and the type of reducing agent on the solid state reductionof haematite $Fe_2O_3$ have been investigated at room temperature. Aluminium titanium zinc and copper were used as reducing agent. Nanocomposites of metal-oxide in which oxide particles with nano size were dispersed in Fe matrix were obtained by mechanical alloying of $Fe_2O_3$ with aluminium and titanium respectively However the reduction of $Fe_2O_3$ by coppe was not occurred Composite materials of iron with $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ were obtained from the system of $Fe_2O_3-Al$ and $Fe_2O_3-Ti$ after ball milling for 20 hrs and 30 hrs respectively. And the system of $Fe_2O_3-Zn$ resulted in the formationof FeO with ZnO after ball milling of 120 hrs. The final grain sizes of iron estimated by X-ray diffraction line-width measurement were in the ranges of 24~33 nm.

Texture and Toughness of Chuncheon Nephrite, Korea (춘천산 연옥의 조직 및 인성에 관한 연구)

  • 연옥은 구성광물의 조직, 결합양상 및 화학조성 등에 의해 일반적인 투각섬석과 구분되며, 색, 경도 및 인성 등에 의해 등급과 가치가 달라진다. 본 연구에서는 춘천산 연옥을 대상으로 연옥의 물리적 특성(조직, 경도 및 인성) 등의 연구가 수행되었다. 춘천산 연옥은 구성광물인 투각섬석의 조직, 입도 및 공생광물(불순물)의 특성에 따라 세 가지 유형(유형 I, 유형 II, 유형 III)으로 구분된다. 유형 I은 치밀한 극미립의 초미정질(<5$\mu\textrm{m}$) 투감섬석의 치밀한 집합체로서 구성되며, 유형 II와 유형 III은 미정질(10~30$\mu\textrm{m}$) 및 세립 (>50$\mu\textrm{m}$)의 투각섬석 집합체로서 투휘석, 활석, 녹니석 및 사문석 등이 미량으로 함유된다.연옥을 구성하는 세 유형의 투각섬석의 화학조성은 Fe, Al 성분이 유형 III에서 가장 높은 함량(1.07~1.88wt.% FeO, 1.3~2.59wt.% Al2O3)을 나타내며, 유형 II(0.22~0.37wt.% FeO, 0.66~0.77wt.% Al2O3), 유형 I (0.20~0.24wt.% FeO, 0.05~0.12wt.% Al2O3)의 순으로 감소함을 보이고, SiO2 성분은 유형 I (59.13~59.67 wt.%), 유형 II(58.02~59.40wt.%), 유형 III (57.34~58.63 wt.%)순으로 함량이 낮아짐을 알 수 있다.연옥의 미경도(VHN=311~659)와 파괴인성치(2.38$\times$105~5.62$\times$105 dyne.cm-3/2)는 유형 I, 유형 II, 유형 III의 순으로 낮아진다. 이러한 결과는 조직 및 집합구조의 특성과 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있음을 반영한다.

Al-Fe Partitioning between Coexisting Garnet and Epidote from Metamorphic Rocks

  • The assemblage epidote and grandite garnet occurs in low-to medium-grade metabasites and calc schists of various geotectonic settings and in hydrothermally altered calcareous rocks in skarn deposits. The compositions of sixteen epidote-garnet paris have been analysed by means of electron microprobe. Al-Fe partitioning between coexisting grandite garnet and epidote is considered and measured at the grain boundaries on the supposition that the surface equilibrium was maintained in the following exchange reaction: 2$Ca_2Al_3Si_3O_12$(OH)+$Ca_3Fe_2Si_3O_12$=2$Ca_2A_l2FeSi_3O_12$(OH)+$Ca_3Al_2Si_3O_12$ Partition coefficients confirms the differences in thermal conditions between low-grade and medium-grade metamorphic rocks. $K_D$ values ($X_{$CO_2$}$=($Fe^{+3}$/Al)$^{Ep}$/($Fe^{+3}$/Al)$^{Gr}$, where Fe=$Fe^{+3}$) from greenschist facies rocks of the estimated metamorphic temperatures, 330~$390^{\circ}C$, range approximately between 0.02 and 0.17. Epidote-amphibolite facies rocks and calcareous skarns of the estimated temperatures, 400~$550^{\circ}C$, have $K_D$ values between 0.24 and 0.37. $K_D$ values from the rocks of the temperatures, 640~$700^{\circ}C$, range nearly between 0.58 and 0.75. The diagrams in Figs. 2 and 3 can serve as a mineralogic thermometer for relatively shallow rocks, assuming that the pressure dependence of partition coefficients for the iron-exchange reaction in the two minerals can be neglected.

Fabrication and Characterization of High Purity Al2O3 by Decomposition of Selicite (세리사이드 분해에 의한 고순도 Al2O3의 제조 및 특성에 관한 연구)

  • High purity Al2O3 has been extracted from serlcite of clayminerals, selicite was treated by H2SO4(2N∼18N) solution, NH4OH treatment(PH8.5∼10.0) and metallic impurities such as Fe were removed by NaOH treatment. The tendency of extraction yield of ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 have been investigated by relating reaction time, acid concentration. Reaction products were analyzed by DT-TGA, chemical analysis and X-ray diffractometer. Prepared ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 power is fired in air at 1400$^{\circ}C$, 1600$^{\circ}C$ 2hr. The results are as follows; 1. The most suitable extracting conditions of ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 from Selicite were N-H2SO4, 120 min acidtreating time. 2. The optimum pH condition was 9.0. 3. Physical properties of sintered Al2O3 bodies were as follows. Relative density is 99%. Water absorption is 0.26%. Rock well hardness is 89.

Effect of oxalic acid on the iron content of pottery stone (도석의 탈철에 관한 Oxalic acid의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The pottery stones from the Taebek area consist of abundant quartz with kaolinite. In this study, the characteristics of pottery stones were examined by XRD (X-ray diffractometer), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometer), TG-DTA and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). The chemical compositions of the raw ore showed 71.75 wt%$SiO_2$, 22.10 wt%$Al_2O_3$, 1.86 wt%CaO, 2.97 wt%$K_2O$, 0.62 wt%$Fe_2O_3$. When pottery stone of 3 mm size was leached at $80^{\circ}C$ with 10 % oxalic acid, the content of $Fe_2O_3$ was reduced from 0.62 wt% to 0.24 wt% and the whiteness was enhanced. Grinding of pottery stone was conducted by a planetary ball mill using media of zirconia, the average particle size was 2~5 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
