We report the nitrogen monoxide (NO) gas sensing properties of p-type CuO-nanorod-based gas sensors. We synthesized the p-type CuO nanorods with breadth of about 30 nm and length of about 330 nm by a hydrothermal method using an as-deposited CuO seed layer prepared on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate by the sputtering method. We fabricated polycrystalline CuO nanorod arrays at $80^{\circ}C$ under the hydrothermal condition of 1:1 morality ratio between copper nitrate trihydrate [$Cu(NO_2)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$] and hexamethylenetetramine ($C_6H_{12}N_4$). Structural characterizations revealed that we prepared the pure CuO nanorod array of a monoclinic crystalline structure without any obvious formation of secondary phase. It was found from the gas sensing measurements that the p-type CuO nanorod gas sensors exhibited a maximum sensitivity to NO gas in dry air at an operating temperature as low as $200^{\circ}C$. We also found that these CuO nanorod gas sensors showed reversible and reliable electrical response to NO gas at a range of operating temperatures. These results would indicate some potential applications of the p-type semiconductor CuO nanorods as promising sensing materials for gas sensors, including various types of p-n junction gas sensors.

A novel design of gas sensor using Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films which are deposited on low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates is presented. The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 ${\mu}m$ are fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The GZO thin films with different thickness are deposited on LTCC substrates, by RF magnetron sputtering method. The microstructure and sensing properties of GZO gas sensing films are analyzed as a function of the film thickness. The films are well crystallized in the hexagonal (wurzite) structure with increasing thickness. The maximum sensitivity of 3.49 is obtained at 100 nm film thickness and the fastest 90% response time of 27.2 sec is obtained at 50 nm film thickness for the operating temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ to the $NO_2$ gas.

In this study, phthalocyanine thin films were prepared by vacuum sublimation method and investigated sensing characteristics of the films. The phthalocyannies used for the prepaation of the NO$_{x}$ sensors were metal-free Pc(H$_{2}$Pc) and metal Pc(CuPc, CoPc, PbPc). And the substrate temperatures maintained during the fomation of Pc films were varied between R.T. and 200$^{\circ]C$, and the base pressure was 5${\times}10^{6}$ torr. The relationships between NO$_{2}$ sensing properties and SEM analyses as a function of substrate temperatures during the formation of the films were investigated. Among the Pc films, PbPc film showed the best sensing characteristics. Particularlly, the PbPc films prepared at 70$^{\circ]C$ of the substrage temperature showen good sensitivity of 85% to 1ppm NO$_{2}$ gas at operating temperature 190$^{\circ]C$ and response time was about 24 seconds.
This study investigates the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing characteristics of an Si MOSFET gas sensor with a tungsten trioxide (WO3) sensing layer deposited using the sputtering method. The Si MOSFET gas sensor consists of a horizontal floating gate (FG) interdigitated with a control gate (CG). The WO3 sensing layer is deposited on the interdigitated CG-FG of a field effect transistor(FET)-type gas sensor platform. The sensing layer is deposited with different thicknesses of the film ranging from 100 nm to 1 ㎛ by changing the deposition times during the sputtering process. The sensing characteristics of the fabricated gas sensor are measured at different NO2 concentrations and operating temperatures. The response of the gas sensor increases as the NO2 concentration and operating temperature increase. However, the gas sensor has an optimal performance at 180℃ considering both response and recovery speed. The response of the gas sensor increases significantly from 24% to 138% as the thickness of the sensing layer increases from 100 nm to 1 ㎛. The sputtered WO3 film consists of a dense part and a porous part. As reported in previous work, the area of the porous part of the film increases as the thickness of the film increases. This increased porous part promotes the reaction of the sensing layer with the NO2 gas. Consequently, the response of the gas sensor increases as the thickness of the sputtered WO3 film increases.
The gas sensing characteristic of $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were investigated. $MoO_3$-carbon composite spheres were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of aqueous droplets containing Mo-source and sucrose in nitrogen, which were converted into $MoO_3$ yolk-shell spheres by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ in air. Subsequently, $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were prepared by the partial sulfidation of $MoO_3$. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres showed relatively low and irreversible gas sensing characteristics at < $200^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the sensor showed high and reversible response (S=resistance ratio) to 5 ppm $NO_2$ (S=14.8) at $250^{\circ}C$ with low cross-responses (S=1.17-2.13) to other interference gases such as ethanol, CO, xylene, toluene, trimethylamine, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and HCHO. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres can be used as reliable sensors to detect $NO_2$ in a selective manner.
$SnO_2:CNT$ thick films for gas sensors were fabricated by screen printing method on alumina substrates and were annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ in air. The nano $SnO_2$ powders were prepared by solution reduction method using tin chloride ($SnCl_2.2H_2O$), hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) and NaOH. Nano $SnO_2:CNT$ sensing materials were prepared by ball-milling for 24h. The weight range of CNT addition on the $SnO_2$ surface was from 0 to 10 %. The structural and morphological properties of these sensing material were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope. The structural properties of the $SnO_2:CNT$ sensing materials showed a tetragonal phase with (110), (101), and (211) dominant orientations. No XRD peaks corresponding to CNT were observed in the $SnO_2:CNT$ powders. The particle size of the $SnO_2:CNT$ sensing materials was about 5~10 nm. The sensing characteristics of the $SnO_2:CNT$ thick films for 5 ppm $H_2S$ gas were investigated by comparing the electrical resistance in air with that in the target gases of each sensor in a test box. The results showed that the maximum sensitivity of the $SnO_2:CNT$ gas sensors at room temperature was observed when the CNT concentration was 8wt%.

Urchin-structured zinc oxide(ZnO) nanorod(NR) gas sensors were successfully demonstrated on a polyimide(PI) substrate, using single wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) as the electrode. The ZnO NRs were grown with ZnO shells arranged at regular intervals to form a network structure with maximized surface area. The high surface area and numerous junctions of the NR network structure was the key to excellent gas sensing performance. Moreover, the SWCNTs formed a junction barrier with the ZnO which further improved sensor characteristics. The fabricated urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors exhibited superior performance upon $NO_2$ exposure with a stable response of 110, fast rise and decay times of 38 and 24 sec, respectively. Comparative analyses revealed that the high performance of the sensors was due to a combination of high surface area, numerous active junction points, and the use of the SWCNTs electrode. Furthermore, the urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors showed sustainable mechanical stability. Although degradation of the devices progressed during repeated flexibility tests, the sensors were still operational even after 10000 cycles of a bending test with a radius of curvature of 5 mm.
