  • This study explores the concepts and programs of 'makerspaces' at public libraries. It examines the extended and sustainable service outreach strategies of 14 Korean public libraries whose makerspaces were identified as "infinite imagination spaces." Through interviews with staff members, the study identifies the needs, effects, limitations, and future direction of makerspaces. The study also evaluates the development, types, funding sources, and outcomes of makerspaces in public libraries through related literature reviews and case studies. The study's findings suggest that strategies with stable and varied funding, staffing, and training are crucial to fostering makerspaces that not only become communal gathering spots, but also become gateways to technological tinkering that 'make' spaces for community archives.

  • Based on the current status of use of L-Commerce installed in the Yongsan Public Library and Mapo Lifelong Learning Center, this study suggested the direction of spatial design for the public library's makerspace with L-Commons model. To this end, we investigated the literature research on library makerspaces and the case studies of makerspaces installed in 25 public libraries in Korea and 18 public libraries in the US. And In-depth interviews and user surveys were conducted. The public library makerspace presented through this study should be an open space where everyone in the community can easily enter, break down barriers between all classes in the region, and lead to smooth communication. Second, it should be a learning, cooperation, and creative space where resources can be shared and cooperation for creative activities and projects can be carried out. Third, it should be a creative workspace where community members can turn ideas into physical things that anyone can't do elsewhere or work on something interesting.

  • The "fourth industrial revolution" is changing society as a whole. Public innovation is needed to enhance national competitiveness. Amid these times' demands, the "maker movement," a new form of DIY movement that has revived since 2000, is regarded as a "popular innovation activity" that can respond to changing needs. In particular, "Makerspace," a significant activity area for the maker's movement, is drawing attention as a place where "Maker" shares each other's knowledge and resources, and share results. Makerspace has recently expanded its functions into a 'public innovation platform' or (preparation) start-up preparation space for start-ups. South Korea has also supported various types of "Makerspace" since 2010 as a policy for fostering an innovation base. The Ministry of Small and Medium Venture Business has been pushing for expansion of Makerspace since 2018 and is providing support by dividing it into "general rap" and "professional wrap" and "zero to Maker" spaces for novice makers in the beginning and necessary stages of makers, while "professional rap" is divided into "Maker to Maker" spaces for professionals. This study is about Makerspace, space where makers are active among the topics related to manufacturers. Thus, in this study, significant domestic and international studies related to Makerspace have been investigated so far, and trends in related studies have analyzed. Based on this, the research needs and specifics of Makerspace, which has recently expanded its role and functions. In particular, the Commission intends to present the need for research on Makerspace and specific areas of study from a start-up management perspective to promote qualitative growth of Makerspace, which is changing into a popular innovation platform in the era of the fourth industry, and inducing a start-up management interest in new manufacturing industry types.

  • As makerspaces continue to be introduced in academic libraries in Korea, this study explores potential operating strategies of, and long-term justifications for, makerspaces as digital literacy eduational spaces and services at academic libraries. By examining related literature reviews and case studies of makerspaces, this study analyzes various programs and their respective creation, funding, development, and outcomes, including educational value and library-specific goals such as digital literacy and lifelong learning. This study also considers the perspectives of librarians at academic libraries in Korea who were asked about the purpose, impact, and limitations of makerspaces. Certain common themes appear: for example, it is necessary for makerspaces to resolve challenges related to stable funding, as well as staffing and training of professional librarians assisting with the on-the-ground operation of makerspaces. This study proposes that designing makerspaces for an academic library setting goes deeper than providing a collaborative environment with access to new technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters, and it may be uniquely appropriate to draw connections to libraries' objectives to provide digital literacy education and universities' mission to foster innovation and creativity among students.

  • In this study, I focus on makerspaces, which have rapidly spread since the late 2000s in the world's major cities. Makerspaces, born amid great social change, reflect the core characteristics of industrial space. I analyze the makerspace based on the theoretical perspectives of urbanism in the macroscopic aspect and placeness in the microscopic aspect. The urbanism of makerspaces is manifested through entry into the inner cities and their connections with urban capabilities. This means that convergence with innovation factors is becoming more important than optimization of factor costs and agglomeration economies in the locational determinants of industrial space. The placeness of makerspaces is being re-formed through an emphasis on taste, the expansion of autonomy, and the strengthening of connections. This reveals how the value creation process within the industrial space is changing, from forming-placelessness through standardization, uniformity, and compartmentalization to forming-placeness through restoration of individual humanity and interaction. The results of the urbanism and placenesss analysis carry implications for the present moment, when it is necessary to diversify the spatial planning of industrial spaces.

  • The purpose of this study is to recommend practical guidelines for developing and operating makerspaces in public libraries. Using the results of prior research, this study examines eight public library makerspaces across key elements, including space, size, staff, equipment, programs, and budget. This study finds that public library makerspaces should be built according to the library's size, budget, and purpose, and should also employ sustainable operating strategies. On that basis, this study suggests three models of guidelines for implementing and developing makerspaces in public libraries: the "craft" makerspace at the basic level, the "studio" makerspace at the intermediate level, and the "platform" makerspace at the regional level.
