  • Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

  • It was confirmed that a white porcelain figurine in underglaze iron was damaged after exhibition. This study analyzes the current state of salt damage on the artifact and identifies the factors contributing to its deterioration by examining the material characteristics of the artifact and exhibition environment. The analysis will thus assist in preparing a conservation scheme for artifacts. The crystallized carbonate on the surface of the white porcelain figurine is a water-soluble alkali salt with high hygroscopicity and high solubility in water. This solubility increases as the temperature increases. The figurine was low-fired at approximately 1000℃. A lead glaze was applied, and thin cracks were formed on the glazed surface, indicating poor surface properties. Our analysis suggested that the showcase used in the exhibition likely created a moist environment resulting from condensation, as it was exposed to high temperature and relative humidity, particularly in comparison to the exhibition room where the temperature was regulated using an air conditioner. In addition, the artifacts in the showcase were exposed to sudden changes in temperature and relative humidity as the air conditioner was repeatedly turned on and off. Therefore, it can be deduced that the soluble salt remaining on the white porcelain figurine moved toward the surface of the relatively weak glaze as a result of the temperature, and the crystallized salt exacerbated surface damage as the moisture evaporated in a dry environment.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect any further growth or expansion of preexisting defects or to characterize failure mechanisms. Recently, this kind of technique, that is an in-situ monitoring of inside damages of materials or structures, becomes increasingly popular for monitoring the integrity of large structures like a huge wind turbine blade. Therefore, it is required to find a symptom of damage propagation before catastrophic failure through a continuous monitoring. In this study, a new damage location method has been proposed by using signal mapping algorithm, and an experimental verification is conducted by using small wind turbine blade specimen; a part of 750 kW real blade. The results show that this new signal mapping method has high advantages such as a flexibility for sensor location, improved accuracy, high detectability. The newly proposed method was compared with traditional AE source location method based on arrival time difference.

  • In order to evaluate the limit earthquake resistance of multi-story steel frames influenced by the strength and stiffness ratios of members, a series inelastic response analysis were carried out. From the analysis results, the damage distribution rules of multi-story steel frames were proposed. Conclusions are summarized as follows; 1)As the stiffness ratios of beam and column becomes small, the damage concentrates on the lower end of columns of the first story. 2) Considering the strength and stiffness ratios of the beam and column with weak beam type mechanism, the equations predicting the damage distribution of multi-story steel flames were proposed. 3) Through the equation which was supposed in this study, it is speculated that the damage distribution of the rigid or semirigid beam collapse type multi-story steel structure building can be predicted.

  • The olfactory system is an important model for the study of neuronal degeneration and regeneration, including neuronal diseases. When the olfactory sensory neurons are damaged by nerve injury or are exposed to environmental factors, they degenerate and are replaced by regenerating neurons. To monitor neuronal degeneration in living animal, we established an olfactory-specific GFP transgenic zebrafish. The effects of Triton X-100 or sodium acetate on the olfactory system were examined. A significant decrease in the number of GFP-positive olfactory sensory neurons was observed after chemical lesion. We found a recovery of GFP-positive neurons by 2 days posttreatment. From these results, we expect that further studies of olfactory degeneration and regeneration using this transgenic zebrafish will provide important advances for the study of neuronal degeneration and regeneration.

  • In this study, we present a progressive fatigue damage model for accurately predicting the fatigue life of laminated composites. The proposed model simulates intralaminar damage progression within composites based on the continuum mechanics and employs the LaRC05 failure criteria to predict the initiation of damage in both the fibers and matrix. A damage variable is introduced to capture the degradation of material properties under cyclic loading, which accumulates progressively with each fatigue cycle, enabling reliable fatigue life prediction. The model comprehensively accounts for key failure mechanisms, including fiber fracture, matrix cracking, fiber kinking, and fiber splitting and provides a detailed analysis of the damage evolution within the composite. The algorithm is implemented into the UMAT subroutine of ABAQUS. To validate the model, simulations were conducted using T700/2510 composite laminates, evaluating fatigue life with various stacking sequences and stress ratios. The simulation results were compared with experimental S-N curves, and showed a strong correlation, thereby confirming the accuracy and reliability of the proposed model.

  • The most of the goals of pump designers and users are efficient operation and productivity. But the safety-grade pumps in nuclear power plants are needed to operate continuously for an essential condition of system operation. Also, most of the rules and regulatory standards that have been prepared for nuclear pumps are dedicated to achieve public safety. The study examined pump vibration in a pump outlet flow and distinguished the regions of pump vibration frequency cause by cavitation and recirculation. The study made a counterproposal in determination of pump outlet flow so that the discharge flow will be able to minimize the long-term damage of the pump.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking or debonding of the reinforcements cause a significant damage mode because the damaged reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. An incremental constitutive relation of discontinuously-reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of the composites is demonstrated.
