  • The sloshing phenomenon can be defined as the nonlinear movement of the free-surface of liquids inside tanks. It generates dynamic loads on the tank structure and thus becomes a problem of relative importance in the design of marine structures. The present study describes a experiment of the sloshing of flows with free-surface which contained in a rectangular tank moving in pitching motion.

Study on Sloshing Behaviors in Liquid Storage Tank with Rectangular Cross Section (사각단면 액체저장탱크에서의 슬로싱 거동 연구)

  • In this study, experimental procedures were suggested to investigate the sloshing behavior of a liquid storage tank subjected to inevitably external vibrating conditions. For this purpose. liquid storage tank with rectangular cross section was made of an acrylic resin for the visualization of liquid fluctuation. A specially designed vibrator was used to provide a specified vibrating condition to the liquid storage tank. Extrapolation technique was applied to determine sloshing natural frequency by using various sloshing frequencies at each vibrating displacement and liquid contents at a fixed vibrating frequency. Sloshing mode was also determined from continuous images or liquid fluctuation captured from a video camera. In addition, change in the height of the liquid free surface was measured by using a floating target and a laser displacement sensor. It is found that the suggested method can be applicable to identify the sloshing behavior of liquid storage tank with rectangular cross section.

Numerical analysis of 2-DOF motions of an ocean floater with sloshing effects (슬로싱 영향을 동반한 해양 부유체의 2자유도 거동 수치해석)

  • The sloshing of liquid inside an ocean floater is caused by disturbances due to waves. For the analysis of sloshing impact within the floater and that of waves on the floater, the coupled analysis method is used. The Stokes $5^{th}$ order non-linear wave theory equations were adapted for wave making. Furthermore, Navier-Stokes equation and Shear-Stress Transport (SST) turbulent model were used to Computational Fluid dynamics, where the ocean floater motions are considered the heave and the pitch motion. The results obtained confirms the mutual relationship between the rigid body motions and that of sloshing, where the sloshing behaviour within the floater is characterized by the wave effects on the floater.

  • The purpose of the development of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system is reduction in royalty and increase in competitiveness of shipbuilding industry. An assessment of structure safety for LNG cargo containment system under sloshing load due to ship motion has become an important design element. The ideal way is to implement fully interaction of the fluid domain and the cargo containment system. However the irregular sloshing pressure were idealized in the form of a triangular wave for safety assessment because the fluid- structure interaction analysis is taken the extensive computation time and difficult to ensure the accuracy of the results. In this study, the sloshing load was assumed to be a triangular wave with a maximum pressure of 10 bar during 15/1000 seconds. In the analytic results, the basic insulation panel of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system was assessed to be structurally safe for sloshing load.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict sloshing pressure of a actual tank by using measured pressure in scaled down tank and to evaluate with structural strength of LNG Corner Block. For this purpose, we performed sloshing analysis about 138K class tank by using Ansys CFX program, and were measured both average pressure and maximum peak pressure according to scaled tank ratio. Also, measured pressure was converted to pressure of the actual tank by Froude scale law, and we conducted the evaluation of structural strength about the conner block of actual size KC-1.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional least-square, level-set-based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The code was validated by solving some benchmark problems. The proposed method was found to provide improved results against other existing methods, by using a coarser mesh. The results of the numerical experiments conducted during the course of this study showed that the proposed method was both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems. Using a substantially coarse grid, historical results of the dynamic pressure at a selected position corresponded with existing experimental data. The pressure history with a finer grid was similar to that of a coarse grid; however, a fine grid provided higher peak pressures. The present method could be extended to the analysis of a sloshing problem in a complex geometrical configuration using unstructured meshes owing to the features of FEM.

  • The two-dimensional sloshing problem in a rigid rectangular tank with a free surface is considered. The flow is generated by a container in harmonic motion in time along the horizontal axis, i.e., a container excited by u=Asin($2{\pi}ft$) where u denotes the container velocity imposed externally, A is the amplitude of the oscillation velocity, and f is the frequency of oscillation. Experimental apparatus is arranged to investigate the large-amplitude sloshing flows in off-resonant conditions, where the large amplitude means that A~O(1), and the distance, S, is comparable to the breadth, L, of the container, i.e., L/S~O(1). Comprehensive particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are obtained, which show that the flow physics of the nonlinear off-resonant sloshing problem can be characterized into three peculiar free surface motions: standing-wave motions similar to those of linear sloshing, a run-up phenomenon along the vertical sidewall at the moment of turn-over of the container, and gradually propagating bore motion from the sidewall to the interior fluid region, like a hydraulic jump.

  • Sloshing of LNG cargo can cause high impact loads on the supporting and containing structures. This is particularly critical for membrane-type tanks since these will have flat surfaces and corner regions which can lead to increased peak pressures for sloshing impacts. The membrane-type containment system is much more flexible compared to the steel hull structure. As a result, fluid-structure interaction plays an important role in the structural analysis of the containment system under sloshing load. This study is based on the direct calculation method of applying sloshing loads to the KC-1 basic insulation system using finite element analysis. The structural analysis of KC-1 basic insulation system considers the dashpot as fluid-structure interaction between liquid cargo and the LNG containment system. The maximum stress of the polyurethane form for KC-1 insulation system is 1.5 times lower than one without dashpot.

Experimental Study on Sloshing Characteristics of a Ferrofluid in the Spherical Container (구형 용기 내 자성유체의 슬로싱 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This work describes the experimental investigations on sloshing characteristics of water and ferrofluid as working fluids in the spherical container with the horizontal oscillation motion and compared the results obtained by two working fluids. In order to Investigate the sloshing characteristics of the sphere container with the horizontal oscillation, experiments are performed with the magnetic intensities from 0 mT to 50 mT and horizontal oscillation motions from 5 mm to 15 mm. As results, Ferrofluid without magnetic field in the sphere container showed a similar liquid surface movement with water. The resonance point of the ferrofluid in the sphere container happened at higher value than that of the theoretical resonance frequency with the rise of the magnetic field. In addition, the sloshing characteristics of the ferrofluid in the sphere container can be controlled with the resonance frequency with the magnetic intensity and the liquid surface displacement could be also controlled.

  • To ensure the structural integrity of membrane type LNG tank, the rational assessment of impact pressure and structural responses due to sloshing should be preceded. The sloshing impact pressures acting on the insulation system of LNG tank are typical irregular loads and the structural responses caused by them also very complex behaviors including fluid structure interaction. So it is not easy to estimate them accurately and huge time consuming process would be necessary. In this research, a simplified method to analyze the dynamic structural responses of LNG tank insulation system under pressure time histories obtained by sloshing model test or numerical analysis was proposed. This technique basically based on the concept of linear combination of the triangular response functions which are obtained by the transient response analysis under the unit triangular impact pressure acting on structures in time domain. The validity of suggested method was verified through the example calculations and applied to the structural analysis of real Mark III type insulation system using the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model test.
