  • The present study examines the development of self-esteem from young adulthood to old age, as well as predictors of change in self-esteem over time. The eight waves of Korean Welfare Panel Data(KOWEPS) were used for analyses, and a nationally representative sample of 15,511 individual aged 19 years and above were included. The multilevel growth curve model was specified to address the research questions. The result shows that the self-esteem trajectory differed across different age groups with those in early adulthood and adulthood showed an increasing linear trajectories while the old age showed a declining slope. Furthermore, predictors of changes in self-esteem also differed across the age groups that while depression and relationship variables were constant in predicting self-esteem change for all three age groups, some variables such as marital status, poverty status, and employment status predicted individuals in certain age groups. Such results demonstrate the need to understand and examine the change in self-esteem at the individual level.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the effects of parents' self-esteem on preschool aged children's emotional responses and attention, mediated by their self-esteem, utilizing data from the 7th Panel Study of Korean Children. This study analyzed the main survey of the 7th year survey of the Panel Study on Korean Children and 1383 families from which both parents participated in the survey (1383 couples of parents and 1383 children). The results revealed that mother's self-esteem had a direct effect on children's self-esteem and that children's self-esteem had direct effects on their emotional responses and attention. Mother's self-esteem also had direct effects on children's emotional responses and attention, as well as indirect effects on their emotional responsiveness and attention, and these effects were mediated by parents' self-esteem. Overall, the study revealed the impact of parents' self-esteem on children's emotional responsiveness and attention and provided basic data for the development of an education program for preschool aged children and parents. Thus, it is necessary to develop educational programs to improve preschool aged children's self-esteem and to develop a program for the formation and maintenance of mother's positive self-esteem.

  • This study focused on the sex culture and the sexual rights of women, examining the gender-role stereotype that is related to the protection of the sexual rights of female college students and identifying the influence of self- esteem. The research was conducted on gender-role stereotypes, sexual assertiveness, and self-esteem among female university students attending four-year universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Four hundred eighty-two copies were used for analysis. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to identify the correlation between the variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the mediated effects of self-esteem in the effects of gender-role stereotypes on sexual assertiveness. The Sobel test was conducted to confirm that the effects were statistically significant. The results of this study were as follows. First, the gender-role stereotype had negative correlations with self-esteem and sexual assertiveness. Self-esteem had positive correlations with sexual assertiveness. Second, self-esteem was found to be a partial mediating factor when the gender-role stereotype had a statistically significant effect on sexual assertiveness. Therefore, a coping strategy under the influence of the gender-role stereotype is necessary for improving the sexual assertiveness skill of female students. This study also suggests the need for sex role-related education programs or counseling on self-esteem.

Second, the fandom activity predicted the self - esteem as a negatively. Third, ego - resilience predicts self - esteem statistically and significantly. Fourth, ego - resilience partially mediated the relationship between fandom activity and self - esteem. In other words, it is confirmed that the fandom activity directly lowers the self - esteem but indirectly decreases through the ego - resilience. • The purpose of this research is to identify the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between family social capital and self-esteem of adolescents. Five waves of panel data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey were employed for this research. Korean Adolescents Policy Research Institute collected the first wave data in 2004 from elementary school children in 4th grade. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was performed to analysis the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between family social capital and self-esteem. The major findings were as follows. First, stability coefficient of family social capital and self-esteem showed that both variables were significantly stable over time. Secondly family social capital(t) had statistically significant effect on self-esteem(t+1), whereas self-esteem did not predict family social capital at a statistically significant level. These findings suggest that family social capital and self-esteem is stable overtime, and that obtaining family social capital and establishing positive self-esteem is important during this period in childhood. In addition, the results show that family social capital affects self-esteem, which highlights the importance of family social capital accumulation on the development of adolescent self-esteem.
