  • The purpose for this study was to investigate the health status according to the age and BMI by interviewing male workers in their twenties and thirties in the Daegu Gyeongbuk region. The body measurement was assessed by height, weight, BMI, body circumference (waist, hip), waist-hip ratio and body fat mass. The health status has been analyzed and assessed as normal group, health concerned group and health suspected groups. Weight, percent ideal body weight (PIBW), BMI and body circumference (waist, hip) and waist-hip ratio was proven higher according to the order of obese group, overweight group and normal group. Waist-hip ratio was proved to be higher in the thirties group than the twenties. Body fat mass was higher in the obese, overweight and normal groups. In the concerns of health status, the ratio of health concerned group and health suspected group increased according to the increase of BMI. Blood pressure (SBP, DBP) was higher in the obese group than in the normal group and overweight groups, and blood glucose was higher in the thirties than in the twenties. SGOT, SGPT, ${\gamma}-GTP$ has been proven higher in the obese group than in the normal group and overweight group, ${\gamma}-GTP$ was higher in the thirties than in the twenties. Investigating the correlation of the anthropometric characteristics and biochemical characteristics, the heavy weight resulted in heavier BMI, PIBW, body circumference (waist, hip), waist-hip ratio and higher body fat mass. Blood pressure (SBP, DBP), total cholesterol, blood glucose, SGOT, SGPT and ${\gamma}-GTP$ all became higher according to these influences. In conclusion, male workers have to recognize that health status becomes worse and possibilities of chronic disease prevalence rate increases according to aging and the increase of BMI. Accordingly, it is necessary to make an effort to prevent chronic diseases.

  • Background: Most of all studies about the relation between the health risk and obesity are based on the European and American data. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between adiposity and risk factors for cardiovacular disease (CVD) in normal weight individuals. Materials and Methods: Normal weight subjects with a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and $23kg/m^2$ (76 subjects) and overweight subjects with a BMI between 23 and $25kg/m^2$ (53 subjects) were retained for this study. Normal weight subjects were divided into three group of each adiposity variable, then three group and the overweight group were evaluated for the presence of CVD risk factors and analyze the correlation coefficients between adiposity variables and risk factors controlled for age in normal weight, overweight groups. Using logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio (OR) for the prevalence of risk factors for each group of adiposity variables and the overweight group was estimated relative to the first group in normal weight subjects. Results: Systolic BP, diastolic BP, LDL cholestrol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides in normal weight subjects were significantly correlated with all adiposity variables (P<0.01). Third group (3.7 for %fat and 4.7 for fat mass)of adiposity variables in the normal weight group and the overweight group (6.6 for %fat and 11.5 for fat mass) tended to have higher ORs compared to first group for risk factor variables. Conclusion: Normal weight subjects with elevated adiposity had higher prevalence of risk factors than normal weights subjects with less adiposity. Measuring of adiposity added additional information of cardiovascular disease risk factors in normal weight subjects.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of line dance exercise on HOMA-IR and energy metabolic factors in postmenopausal obese women. The subjects were 24 obese women composed of the line dance group(n=12) trained for 12-week and the control group(n=12). The variables of body composition, HOMA-IR and energy metabolic factors were measured in all the subjects before and after the 12-week line dance exercise. The results of the study in the line dance group were as follows; The body weight, %fat, BMI, WHR and VFA had significantly decreased, but LBM had increased. The ghrelin, HDL-C had significantly increased, but leptin, insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, TC, TG, LDL-C, SBP and DBP had decreased. And ghrelin, leptin, insulin, and glucose were the energy metabolic factors affecting the HOMA-IR in the line dance group. Therefore, regular and continuous line dance exercise will be effective for preventing the life-style diseases with improvement of the energy metabolic factors and insulin resistance by decreasing the body fat.

  • This study measured physical characteristics and physical composition of 16 middle-aged obese women using a body composition analyzer. TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C were investigated in order to analyze components of serum liquids. The study also compared changes regarding cardiovascular risk factors before and after a 12-week exercise program by measuring insulin and intensity of TNF-$\alpha$. To examine such changes, the study carried out a 12-week, complex training program for middle-aged obese women who did not regularly exercise. The results of the study were as follows: 1) after 12 weeks of complex training, in changes of physical characteristics, weight, BMI and WHR were significantly reduced. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure increased, but there were no significant differences; 2) after 12 weeks of complex training, in changes of physical composition, body fat mass and body fat rate were significantly reduced and fat free mass was significantly increased; 3) after 12 weeks of complex training, in changes of serum liquids, TC, TG and LDL-C were significantly reduced. HDL-C increased, but this was not statistically significant; 4) after 12 weeks of complex training, in changes of cardiovascular risk factors, insulin and TNF-$\alpha$ were significantly reduced.

  • The purpose of this study was to investgate combined effects of L-carnitine supplementation and exercise on body composition, serum lipids and adiponectin in obese high school female students. Eighteen female students with 35% fat in body weight participated in the study. Students were randomly divided into the following three groups; exercise and L-carnitine supplementation group (ELG: n=5), exercise group (EG: n=6) and control group (CG: n=7), each with seven students. They underwent 10 weeks of exercise (50 min/day, 5 times/wk, 10 wk, RPE 11~16). ELG was given L-carnitine (1 g/day), EG and CG were given placebos. Before and after this period, body composition, serum lipids and adiponectin in plasma were measured. The results of the study in the three groups were as follows: Fat mass and %BF were significantly decreased in ELG. On the other hand, free fat mass was significantly increased in ELG, however, other groups showed no changes. Total cholesterol was significantly increased in the control group. High density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were not different in the three groups. Triglyceride was significantly decreased in ELG. Adiponectin was significantly increased in ELG. This study demonstrated that exercise and carnitine supplementation have a positive effect on fat mass, %BF, free fat mass and adiponetin. Thus, we can improve proper dietary and training programs for obese students.

  • Purpose: This study compared the effects of a high glycemic load (high GL) diet and low glycemic load (low GL) diet on the body weight, body fat, blood pressure, and blood lipid indicators. Methods: Twenty-one young adults aged between 21 and 28 years who were overweighted or obese (body mass index [BMI] between 23 and 33.5 kg/㎡) before the study and after calorie reduction diets with either low GL or high GL for 2 weeks each were examined. The study was a randomized crossover design with a 2-week washout period between the 2 types of diet. The order of the low GL and high GL diet periods was randomized. The body weight, body fat, blood pressure, levels of blood lipids, fasting glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) insulin, C-peptide, and HOMA C-peptide were measured at the baseline, as well as 2, 4, and 6 weeks after starting the experiment. Results: When subjects were on the low GL diet, they lost more weight than those eating the high GL diet (mean ± SD, -2.77 ± 1.09 vs. -1.56 ± 0.78 kg; p < 0.001); there were greater decreases in body fat mass (-1.62 ± 1.19 vs. -0.88 ± 0.91 kg; p = 0.024) and BMI (-0.95 ± 0.32 vs. -0.56 ± 1.08 kg/㎡; p < 0.001). On the other hand, there were no significant differences in changes in biochemical parameters, such as blood lipids and fasting glucose levels, and blood pressure. The body weight, body fat mass, BMI, percent body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol (total, low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein), fasting glucose, C-peptide, HOMA-insulin resistance-C-peptide levels were decreased significantly at 6 weeks. Conclusion: The low GL diet may be more effective in losing body weight, body fat mass, and BMI than the high GL diet for 2 weeks in healthy young overweight or obese adults.
