  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of the gingiva-colored composite resin and the tooth-colored composite resin to porcelain, metal and zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty cylindrical specimens were fabricated and divided into the following 6 groups (Group 1-W: tooth-colored composite bonded to porcelain, Group 1-P: gingiva-colored composite bonded to porcelain, Group 2-W: tooth-colored composite bonded to base metal, Group 2-P: gingiva-colored composite bonded to base metal, Group 3-W: tooth-colored composite bonded to zirconia, Group 3-P: gingiva-colored composite bonded to zirconia). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine after thermocycling and the failure mode was noted. All data were analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance test and the Bonferroni post-hoc test at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. The mean shear bond strength values in MPa were 12.39, 13.42, 8.78, 7.98, 4.64 and 3.74 for Group 1-W, 1-P, 2-W, 2-P, 3-W and 3-P, respectively. The difference between the two kinds of composite resin was not significant. The shear bond strength of Group 1 was the highest and that of Group 3 was the lowest. The differences among Group 1, 2 and 3 were all significant (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The shear bond strength of the gingiva-colored composite was not less than that of the tooth-colored composite. Thus, repairing or fabricating ceramic restorations using the gingiva-colored composite resin can be regarded as a practical method. Especially, the prognosis would be fine when applied on porcelain surfaces.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to assess the clinical longevity of a bulk-fill resin composite in Class II restorations for 3-year. Materials and Methods: Patient record files acquired from the 40 patients who were treated due to needed 2 similar sizes Class II composite restorations were used for this retrospective study. In the experimental cavity, the flowable resin composite SDR was inserted in the dentinal part as a 4 mm intermediate layer. A 2 mm coverage layer with a nano-hybrid resin composite (CeramX) was placed on SDR. The control restoration was performed by an incremental technique of 2 mm using the nano-hybrid resin composite. The restorations were blindly assessed by 2 calibrated examiners using modified United States Public Health Service criteria at baseline and 1, 2, and 3 years. The data were analyzed using non-parametric tests (p = 0.05). Results: Eighty Class II restorations were evaluated. After 3-years, 4 restorations (5%) failed, 1 SDR + CeramX, and 3 CeramX restorations. The annual failure rate (AFR) of the restorations was 1.7%. The SDR + CeramX group revealed an AFR of 0.8%, and the CeramX group an AFR of 2.5% (p > 0.05). Regarding anatomical form and marginal adaptation, significant alterations were observed in the CeramX group after 3-years (p < 0.05). The changes in the color match were observed in each group over time (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The use of SDR demonstrated good clinical durability in deep Class II resin composite restorations.

  • In this study, the piezoelectric ceramics/polymer composite transducers with 1-3 connectivity have been studied. A piezoelectric ceramics PZT prepared by Wet-Dry Combination method was used as a filler in polymer matrix Eccogel. We've got the pulse-echo response for 1-3 type piezc-electric composite transducers in water. It was shown that the transmitting and receiving sensitivity of 1-3 type piezoelectric composite transducers could be improved in comparison with that- of solid PZT transducers. The reason is for that 1-3 type Piezoelectric composites have low dielectric constant and density. There was in a good agreement between the resonant frequencies calculated from one period and observed results on the Ultrasonic Transducer Analyzer. According to these results we could be figured out the distance in water by virture of the pulse-echo response.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach to describe the vibration characteristics in the 1-3 piezoelectric composite arrayed on a cylindrical surface. By homogenizing the composite composed of a piezoelectric ceramic and a polymer the physically useful parameters were defined and then used to derive the governing equation of radial motion for the cylindrical 1-3 piezoelectric composite. Applying mechanical and electric boundary conditions has yielded a characteristic equation for radial vibration of the composite. Theoretical calculations of the resonance frequency have been compared with those obtained by the finite-element analysis and have shown a good agreement.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the microhardness of restorative composite resin and dual-cured composite resin cement which were light cured through the 1.5mm thickness composite overlay. For restorative materials, Z100 and Tetric Ceram were used. For dual cured composite cements, Variolink II((VL II) of three consistency (low, high, ultra high) were used. To determine the optimal microhardness of Z100, Tetric Ceram and Variolink II, each material was packed into the 1mm thickness teflon mold without composite overlay and light cured for 60 seconds. Then the microhardnesses of each sample were measured, averaged and regarded as optimal hardness of each material. To evaluate the microhardness of restorative composite resin and dual-cured composite resin cement which were light cured through the 1.5mm thickness composite overlay, the composites were packed into 1mm thickness teflon mold, coverd with celluloid strip, and then precured composite overlay which was made of Targis(Ivoclar/Vivadent, Liechtenstein) was positioned. 2 types of visible light curing machine, the power density of one of which was 400$mW/cm^2$ and the other was 900$mW/cm^2$, and one type of argon laser were used to cure the restorative composite and dual cured cement. For each group, 10 sample were assigned. The light curing tip was positioned over the composite overlay and light cured for 1min., 2min. or 3min with visible light curing machine or 15sec, 30 sec, 45sec, and 60 sec with argon laser. The Vickers hardnesses of upper and lower surface of Z100, Tetric Ceram, and 3 types of VL II cement were measured. When the 900 $mW/cm^2$ curing light was used, 2min. was needed for optimal curing of Z100 and Tetric Ceram. Variolink II did not be cured optimally even though the curing time was extended to 3min. When 400$mW/cm^2$ curing light was used, 3min. was necessary for Z100, whereas 3min. was not enough for Tetric Ceram. Variolink II was not cured optimally even though the curing time was extended to 3min. When argon laser was used, Z100, Tetric Ceram and Variolink II were not cured optimally in 60 seconds.

  • The composite membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was developed using $H_3O^+-{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ powder and perfluorosulfonylfluroride copolymer (Nafion) resin. The perfluorosulfonylfluroride copolymer (Nafion) resin was mixed with $H_3O^+-{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ powder and it was made to sheet form by hot pressing. The electrodes were prepared with 60 wt% PtRu/C and 60wt% Pt/C catalysts for anode and cathode, respectively. The morphology and the chemical composition of the composite membrane have been investigated by using SEM and EDXA, respectively. The composite membrane and $H_3O^+-{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ were analyzed by using FT-IR and XRD. The methanol permeability of the composite membranes was also measured by gas chromatography (GC). The performance of the MEA containing the composite membrane (2wt% $H_3O^+-{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$) was higher than that of normal pure Nafion membrane at high operating temperature (e.g. $110^{\circ}C$), due to the homogenous distribution of $H_3O^+-{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$, which decreased the methanol permeability through the membrane and enhanced the water contents in the composite membrane.

  • A composite with 1-3 connectivity was fabricated by filling spurrs epoxy in arried PZT bars. The composite bad lower density(2220 Kg/$m^3$), lower dielectric constant, lower piezoelectric coefficient d33(260*$10^{12}$ C/N), and higher voltage coefficient(110.1*$10^{-3}$ Vm/N) than that of solid PZT. The probe was fabricated by using composite transducer that was made above. The underwater testing of the composite transducer was performed with water backing.

  • Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.

  • We report improved low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) effects of the $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1+d}O_3-Mn_3O_4$ composite films with the nominal composition of $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$(LSMO)-50 mol% $Mn_3O_4$. The composite films were fabricated by ex-situ solid phase crystallization (SPC) of amorphous films at the annealing temperature region of $900-1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a pure oxygen atmosphere. The amorphous films were deposited on polycrystalline $BaZrO_3$ (poly-BZO) substrates by dc-magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The Curie temperatures ($T_C$) of all composite films were insignificantly altered in the range of 368-372 K. The highest LFMR value of 1.29 % in 0.5 kOe with the maximum dMR/dH value of $37.4%kOe^{-1}$ at 300 K was obtained from 900 nm-thick composite film annealed at $1100^{\circ}C$. The improved LFMR properties of the composite films are attributed to effective spin-dependent scattering at the $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1+d}O_3$ grain boundaries sharpened by adjacent chemically compatible $Mn_3O_4$ grains.
