  • As the demand for urban underground space increases recently, urban tunnel planning is actively progressing. In the urban area, a underground station is planned in consideration of the living environment of residents, and 2-arch tunnel is applied for the stability of existing structures and reduction of environmental damage. However, since the depth of weak rock mass is deeply distributed in the urban area due to severe weathering, careful planning is required to secure tunnel stability. In addition, if TBM mechanical excavation is applied as the main tunnel excavation method considering the composite ground in urban area, the construction connectivity with the 2-arch tunnel of the NATM concept may be deteriorated. In this study, the design case of applying TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel for the first time in Korea was mainly described. The main considerations for the segment design of TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel were explained for side tunnels. Also, a stability analysis was conducted to verify the effectiveness and adequacy of the TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel.

  • In this study, wish to analyze effect that affect on each tunnel (right and left tunnel) according as proceeding of leading tunnel (right tunnel), following tunnel (left tunnel) and pilot tunnel excavation through behavior of tunnel and surrounding base by model tests. And stress-transfer mechanism that occurs from in-situ loosing area and arching effect by difference of stiffness ratio and overburden heights were verified experimentally. The model tests were carried out by varying the stiffness of reinforced area and overburden height, measured deformation of tunnel and displacement of surrounding base. The model tests followed exactly the real 2-Arch tunnel construction stages.

  • Recently, due to the effective land utilization and environmental protection, the construction of 2-arch tunnel has been gradually increased. In spite of this tendency, the mechanical information for the 2-arch tunnel, especially such as its behavior characteristics and mechanism are not enough. Therefore in this study, the theoretical and numerical studies on the behavior characteristics of 2-arch tunnel are carried out and longitudinal optimum separated distance of tunnel face is proposed by considering the analysis results from the behavior of advanced excavation of tunnel and stress of central pillar. As a result, longitudinal optimum separated distance of tunnel face is in 0.5D for the better safety of 2-arch tunnel by rapidly decreasing the stress concentration of central pillar.

  • Due to increase in urban tunnelling as urban population and traffic volume increase, problems related with site security and civil appeal also increase. This paper presents a comparative analysis between conventional 2-arch tunnel method and non-pilot 2 arch tunnel method, which were performed in the basic design of Wie-Rae region. According to the analysis results, non-pilot 2-arch tunnel method is more efficient in terms of stability, constructability, and economic aspect. It is authors' wish that design procedure and method presented in this paper could help the design and construction of non-pilot 2-arch tunnel that should be planned in the near future.

  • This case was successfully constructed as a leakage prevention case of primary 2-arch tunnel located in Anyang, Gyungkido. The leakage of primary 2-arch tunnel was observed at middle wall of tunnel and girder of tunnel. Such a leakage of primary 2-arch tunnel generally occurred due to the damage of the waterproof membrane constructed on the middle wall during the blasting works of right and left tunnel after construction of the middle wall. As the leakage, icicles hanged from girder of tunnel in the winter. In such phenomenon, the risk of the traffic accident in the tunnel was high. In this case, leakage prevention works were successfully constructed using the heat insulated drainage.

  • This paper concerns optimum design of 2-Arch tunnel. A 2-Arch tunnel adopted in a subway tunnel construction site is considered in this study. A calibrated 3D finite element model was adopted to conduct a parametric study on the lagged distance between left and right tunnel faces. The results of analysis were examined to determine optimum lagged distance for minimizing the interaction between the left and right tunnels. The results indicated that the shotcrete lining stress and the center pillar load are more influenced by the second tunnel excavation than the tunnel deformation. Also shown is that a lagged distance of 20m is sufficient to minimize the interaction between two tunnels. Fundamental mechanism of 2-arch tunnel was also investigated based on the results.

  • In this study, the behavior of a shallow 2-arch tunnel during the excavation in the sandy ground containing vertical discontinuity plane was experimentally studied. Load transfer mechanism in the pillar caused by a 2-arch tunnel excavation was observed. The position of the vertical discontinuity plane was varied. Model tests were carried out in the normal construction sequence of 2-arch tunnel. Test results-showed that the load transfer caused by the 2-arch tunnel excavation was concentrated in the discontinuity plane, and was cut by the discontinuity plane, so no load transfer took place above the discontinuity plane. It was also shown that the effect of adjacent tunnel excavation on the pillar load and the ground deformation was greater when excavating the upper half-face of the main tunnel, more than when excavating the lower half-face.

  • In mountainous area, Two parallel tunnels have been usually recognized as a road tunnel which has benefits in aspects of cost and stability. However, Design and construction of 2-Arch road tunnel are growing recently due to environmental destruction, compensation of land and difficulty of route separation. As studies are mainly undergoing on only guaranteeing stability and developing a waterproofing-drainage system to avoid water leakage through comprehension for characteristics of 2-arch tunnel behaviors, there is a tendency to evaluate quantity of support by empirical method with a tunnel which has a complicated cross-section and lack of construction ability. In this study, therefore, we made a plan of tunnel cross-section which had shown good construction ability and developed the waterproofing-drainage system which is able to solve the water leakage problem fundamentally by analyzing precedented 2-arch tunnels and investigating their sites in and out of nation. We also determined fixed quantity of support by a large-scale model test and numerical analysis. We want to contribute to 2-arch tunnel design hereafter introducing design procedure and method applied here.

  • The behaviour of ground induced by tunneling of 2arch tunnels may differ from the one caused by usual type tunnels. This paper describe the behaviour created by the size of pilot tunnel and the condition on the construction method of center piller Also, loads acting on the supports of the first tunnel and the center pillar during the excavation of second tunnel is investigated by numerical analyses. The results of numerical analyses are compared to the data records of measurement results, i.e. force on the support system and ground displacement.

  • This paper concerns the behavior of 2-Arch tunnel constructed under various conditions. A 2-Arch tunnel section adopted in a subway tunnel construction site is considered in this study. A calibrated 3D finite element model was adopted to conduct parametric studies on a variety of construction scenarios including lagged distance between left and right tunnels, overburden, and geological condition. The results of analyses were examined in terms of crown settlement, shotcrete lining stress, and load on center column in relation to the lagged distance, cover depth, and the ground condition. The results indicate that the shotcrete lining stress and the center pillar load are more influenced by the second tunnel excavation than the tunnel deformation. Also shown is that a greater lagged distance is required to minimize the interaction between two tunnels when the ground condition becomes weaker. Fundamental mechanisms of 2-arch tunnel were also discussed based on the results.
