  • This study analyzed the output precision of 3D printing methods. The inner impeller of the centrifugal compressor was printed in as a sheet with 100% packing density using two methods: field deposition modelling and stereolithography. Dimensional differences between the initial CAD and printed models were evaluated using a 3D scanner. To investigate the dimensional characteristics of the 3D printed impeller, 3D dimension analysis and point dimension analysis were performed. The point dimension analysis was divided into 3D and 2D for comparative analysis.

  • The aeroacoustic characteristics and noise reduction method of a centrifugal fan for a bagless vacuum cleaner were studied. The major noise source of vacuum cleaner is the centrifugal fan. The impeller of the fan rotates over 30000 rpm and generates very high-level piercing noise. It was found that the dominant noise source of the fan is generated from the aerodynamic interaction between the highly rotating impeller and stationary diffuser. In order to reduce the high tonal sound generated from the aerodynamic interaction between the impeller and diffuser, tapered impeller was carefully designed and tested. The trailing edge of the tapered impeller was inclined and this reduces the flow interactions between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser because of some phase shift. The static efficiency of the new impeller is slightly lower than the conventional one. The overall SPL is reduced about 3.6 dBA. The SPL of blade passing frequency(BPF) is reduced about 6 dBA and the $2^{nd}$ BPF is reduced about 20 dBA. The vacuum cleaner with the tapered impeller has lower noise level than that of the previous impeller and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • The aeroacoustic characteristics of a centrifugal fan for a vacuum cleaner and its noise reduction method are studied in this paper. The major noise source of a vacuum cleaner is the centrifugal fan. The impeller of the fan rotates at over 30000 rpm, and generates very high-level noise. It was revealed that the dominant noise source is the aerodynamic interaction between the rotating impeller and stationary diffuser. The directivity of acoustic pressure showed that most of the noise propagates backward direction of the fan-motor assembly. In order to reduce the high tonal sound generated from the aerodynamic interaction, unevenly pitched impeller and diffuser, and tapered impeller designs were proposed and experiments were performed. Uneven pitch design of the impeller changes the sound quality while the overall sound power level (SPL) and the performance remains similar. The effect of the tapered design of impeller was evaluated. The trailing edge of the tapered fan is inclined. This reduces the flow interaction between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser because of some phase shifts. The static efficiency of the new impeller design is slightly lower than the previous design. However, the overall SPL is reduced by about 4 dB(A). The SPL of the fundamental blade passing frequency (BPF) is reduced by about 6 dB (A) and the 2$\^$nd/ BPF is reduced about 20 dB (A). The vacuum cleaner with the tapered impeller design produces lower noise level than the previous one, and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • 2-dimensional impeller's distinctive feature is expected to have an influence on performance and flow characteristics of centrifugal compressor. And new design method is required for 2-dimensional impeller, because the unique geometry cannot be designed using conventional theories. The objective of this study is to advance new design technology for 2-dimensional impeller and to investigate the performance characteristics of designed 2-dimensional centrifugal compressor. The performance test for 2-dimensional impeller is conducted at 35000, 40000 and 45000rpm. Also numerical calculation is applied by using commercial CFD code, FLUENT, and the results are compared with experimental results.

  • Flows were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes between the inlet and outlet of the impeller rotating at 700 rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were estimated from the measured values. Measurements were made for three flow rates corresponding to zero incidence and two others with the greater and the smaller one than zero. From the measured data in these flow rates, the followings were investigated in the impeller passage, the variation of the primary and secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake's position and its size, the static pressure rise and the loss production mechanism. Furthermore the static pressure and the slip factor were compared with the results of inviscid Quasi-3D calculation.

  • This paper describes a numerical study on the improvement of performance of the 2 vane pump impellers. The design of these impellers was optimized using a commercial computation fluid dynamics code and design of experiments. Geometric design variables were defined by the impeller blade angle distribution. The objective functions were defined as the total head, total efficiency and solid material size of the impellers. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using 2k factorial designs. The interaction between the total head, total efficiency and solid material size, according to the impeller blade angle distribution, is discussed by analyzing the 2k factorial design results.

  • The vacuum cleaner that has no dust bag generates very high level annoying noise. The dominant noise source is the 2$\^$nd/ BPF tone of the rotating impeller. In order to reduce the noise, we identify the acoustic characteristics and reduce the noise of the vacuum cleaner and centrifugal fan. The resonance phenomenon is observed in blade passages and we found out that the resonance frequency is very close to the 2$\^$nd/ BPF. In order to reduce this high-level peak noise, new impeller is designed in this paper. The trailing edge of new impeller is inclined and this makes the flow interactions between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser vane occurs with some phase shift. The performance of new impeller is similar to the old one but the overall SPL is reduced about 3.6dBA. The SPL of BPF is reduced about 6dBA and 2$\^$nd/ BPF is reduced about 20dBA. The vacuum cleaner, which uses newly developed centrifugal fan, generate more comfortable noise than the old model and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the impeller and volute in the 2 vane pump were investigated using response surface method (RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Design variables were defined with the impeller blade angle and volute area distribution. The objective functions were defined as the total head, total efficiency and solid material size of the 2 vane pump. The design optimization of the design variables was determined using the RSM. The numerical results for the reference and optimum models were compared and discussed in this work.

  • Flow patterns were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of the impeller rotating at 700rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From the measured data, the primary/secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake-jet flows, static pressure distribution on blade surfaces and the wake production mechanism in the impeller passage were investigated.
