  • As the advance in technology requires micro mechanical systems, the production methods for micro parts are of a great interest of many researchers. Although MEMS is one of the most popular methods. it can only produce 2D microstructures. The micro manufacturing with micro-mill and micro-lathe has a great potential for producing arbitrary 3D shapes and are being researched. In this paper, a PC based 5-axis milling machine with high precision was developed. To evaluate the machine performance, micro ribs and micro columns were machined. The machining experiments of micro impeller and micro turbine blade confirmed the possibility of micro system manufacturing by using the developed milling machine.

  • Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known to be an effective and economical technique for improving the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials. In the LAM method, material is preheated using a laser heat source and then the preheated area is removed by following cutting tool. For laser-assisted turning (LAT), the configuration of the system is not complicated because laser irradiates from a fixed position. In contrast, laser-assisted milling (LAMill) system is not only complicated but also difficult to control because laser heat source must always move ahead of the cutting tool along a three dimensional (3D) tool path. LAMill is still early stage and cannot yet be used to machine finished products with 3D shapes. In this study, a laser-assisted fillet milling process was developed for machining 3D shapes. There are no prior studies combining fillet milling and LAMill. Laser-assisted fillet milling strategy was proposed, and effective depth of cut (EDOC) was obtained using thermal analysis. Experiments were designed using response surface method and cutting force prediction equations were developed using statistical analysis and regression analysis. The optimum machining conditions were also proposed, and energy efficiency of the LAMill was analyzed by comparing the specific cutting energy of conventional machining (CM) and LAMill.

  • Although the conventional contour parallel tool path obtained from geometric information has been successful to make desirable shape, it seldom consider physical process concerns like cutting forces and chatters. In this paper, an optimized contour parallel path, which maintains constant MRR(material removal rates) at all time, is introduced and the result is verified. The optimized tool path is based on a conventional contour parallel tool path. Additional tool path segments are appended to the basic tool path in order to achieve constant cutting forces and to avoid chatter vibrations at the entire machining area. The algorithm has been implemented for two dimensional contiguous end milling operations with flat end mills, and cutting tests were conducted to verify the significance of the proposed method.

  • In Al-25Nb binary system, it was observed only formation of $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ intermetallic compound after 5hr milling but it was not observed formation of meta stable phase like L1$_2$ phase. In this state, $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ fabricated had nano sized grain of approximately 20nm. Ternary systems, transition metals such as Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn were added 6~12at.% as substitution of Al, showed formation of $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ like Al-25Nb binary system. In Al- l2Cu-25Nb system, it was observed that broad XRD pattern like amorphization of Al and not observed formation of $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ after 5hr milling. But there was mixed phase of a lot of amorphous Al and little $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ through TEM. In the states of unalloyed, 5~7hr milling time, those showed exothermic reaction at 35$0^{\circ}C$, which was formation of $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ like Al-25Nb binary system. With increasing milling time to 10hr, $D0_{22}$ $Al_3Nb$ was transformed to mixed phase of amorphous and nanocryatlline, having approximately 10nm grain but the meta stable $Al_3Nb$ was not fabricated by adding transition metals.

  • Focused Ion Beam(FIB) systems is a useful tool for the fabrication of micro-nano scale structures. In this study, the effects of FIB etching on the Au microstructure are systematically investigated. As the fabrication parameters, ion dose, dwell time and beam overlap ratio are studied. First, the increases of Ga ion dose makes the milling yield higher and the sidewall of milling profile steeper. Dwell time is found to have little effects on the milling profile due to the relatively large milling area of $1\times1{\mu}m^2$ used in this study. However, beam overlap significantly affects not only milling rate but also milling profile. As the beam overlap ratio changes from positive to negative, the development of regular cross-stripe patterns at the bottom with low milling rate is observed.

  • We have investigated the effects of Ar and$O_2$-ion milling on the exchange coupling field ($H_{ex}$) and coercive field ($H_c$) at the interfaces between substrates and NiO/NiFe films, to understand the exchange biasing mechanism. The $O_2$-ion milling was successfully performed by means of the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) process. We found that the local roughness gradient of the NiO surface increased by $O_2$-ion milling. The ratio of $H_{ex}/H_c$ increased from 0.87 to 1.77, whereas $H_c$ decreased by almost a half as a results of the ion milling. The decrease in $H_c$could be interpreted as due to the refinement of magnetic domain size, which arose from the increase of the local roughness gradient of the NiO surface. The decrease in low $H_c$, and increase in $H_{ex}$ in NiO spin valves by ECR-ion milling are in the right direction far use in magnetoresistance (MR) heads.

  • This paper deals with the phase analysis of $MgB_2$ bulk using spark plasma sintering process after ball milling. Mg and amorphous B powders were used as raw materials, and milled by planetary-mill for 9 hours at argon atmosphere. In order to confirm formation of $MgB_2$ phase, DTA and XRD were used. The milled powders were fabricated to $MgB_2$ bulk at the various temperatures by Spark Plasma Sintering. The fabricated $MgB_2$ bulk was evaluated with XRD, EDS, FE-SEM and PPMS. In the DTA result, reaction on formation of $MgB_2$ phase started at $340^{\circ}C$. This means that ball milling process improves reactivity on formation of $MgB_2$ phase. The $MgB_2$ MgO and FeB phases were characterized from XRD result. MgO and FeB were undesirable phases which affect formation of $MgB_2$ phase, and it's distribution could be confirmed from EDS mapping result. Spark Plasma Sintered sample for 5 min at $700^{\circ}C$ was relatively densified and it's density and transition temperature showing super conducting property were $1.87\;g/cm^3$ and 21K.

  • Carbonyl iron (CI) is successfully incorporated as an additive into a polystyrene (PS) matrix via a highenergy ball milling method, under an n-hexane medium with volume fractions between 1% and 5% for electromagnetic interference shielding applications by the combination of magnetic CI and an insulating PS matrix. The morphology and the dispersion of CI are investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, which indicates a uniform distribution of CI in the PS matrix after 2 h of milling. The thermal behavior results indicate no significant degradation of the PS when there is a slight increase in the onset temperature with the addition of CI powder, when compared to the as-received PS pellet. After milling, there are no interactions between the CI and the PS matrix, as confirmed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. In this study, the milled CI-PS powder is extruded to make filaments, and can have potential applications in the 3-D printing industry.

  • For the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR), a V2O5WO3/TiO2 (VW/nTi) catalyst was prepared using V2O5 and WO3 on a nanodispersed TiO2 (nTi) support by simple impregnation process. The nTi support was dispersed for 0~3 hrs under controlled bead-milling in ethanol. The average particle size (D50) of nTi was reduced from 582 nm to 93 nm depending on the milling time. The NOx activity of these catalysts with maximum temperature shift was influenced by the dispersion of the TiO2. For the V0.5W2/nTi-0h catalyst, prepared with 582 nm nTi-0h before milling, the decomposition temperature with over 94 % NOx conversion had a narrow temperature window, within the range of 365-391 ℃. Similarly, the V0.5W2/nTi-2h catalyst, prepared with 107 nm nTi-2h bead-milled for 2hrs, showed a broad temperature window in the range of 358~450 ℃. However, the V0.5W2/Ti catalyst (D50 = 2.4 ㎛, aqueous, without milling) was observed at 325-385 ℃. Our results could pave the way for the production of effective NOx decomposition catalysts with a higher temperature range. This approach is also better at facilitating the dispersion on the support material. NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, FT-IR, and XPS were used to investigate the role of nTi in the DeNOx catalyst.
