Facial Feature Extraction with Its Applications

  • Purpose In the many face-related application such as head pose estimation, 3D face modeling, facial appearance manipulation, the robust and fast facial feature extraction is necessary. We present the facial feature extraction method based on shape regression and feature selection for real-time facial feature extraction. Materials and Methods The facial features are initialized by statistical shape model and then the shape of facial features are deformed iteratively according to the texture pattern which is selected on the feature pool. Results We obtain fast and robust facial feature extraction result with error less than 4% and processing time less than 12 ms. The alignment error is measured by average of ratio of pixel difference to inter-ocular distance. Conclusion The accuracy and processing time of the method is enough to apply facial feature based application and can be used on the face beautification or 3D face modeling.

3D Data Dimension Reduction for Efficient Feature Extraction in Posture Recognition (포즈 인식에서 효율적 특징 추출을 위한 3차원 데이터의 차원 축소)

  • 3D posture recognition is a solution to overcome the limitation of 2D posture recognition. There are many researches carried out for 3D posture recognition using 3D data. The 3D data consist of massive surface points which are rich of information. However, it is difficult to extract the important features for posture recognition purpose. Meanwhile, it also consumes lots of processing time. In this paper, we introduced a dimension reduction method that transform 3D surface points of an object to 2D data representation in order to overcome the issues of feature extraction and time complexity of 3D posture recognition. For a better feature extraction and matching process, a cylindrical boundary is introduced in meshless parameterization, its offer a fast processing speed of dimension reduction process and the output result is applicable for recognition purpose. The proposed approach is applied to hand and human posture recognition in order to verify the efficiency of the feature extraction.

A 3D Face Reconstruction Method Robust to Errors of Automatic Facial Feature Point Extraction (얼굴 특징점 자동 추출 오류에 강인한 3차원 얼굴 복원 방법)

  • A widely used single image-based 3D face reconstruction method, 3D morphable shape model, reconstructs an accurate 3D facial shape when 2D facial feature points are correctly extracted from an input face image. However, in the case that a user's cooperation is not available such as a real-time 3D face reconstruction system, this method can be vulnerable to the errors of automatic facial feature point extraction. In order to solve this problem, we automatically classify extracted facial feature points into two groups, erroneous and correct ones, and then reconstruct a 3D facial shape by using only the correctly extracted facial feature points. The experimental results showed that the 3D reconstruction performance of the proposed method was remarkably improved compared to that of the previous method which does not consider the errors of automatic facial feature point extraction.

  • In order to present a space in details, it is indispensable to acquire 3D shape and texture simultaneously from the same platform. 3D shape is acquired by Laser Scanner as point cloud data, and texture is acquired by CCD sensor. Positioning data is acquired by IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). All the sensors and equipments are assembled on a hand-trolley. In this research, a method of integrating the 3D shape and texture for automated construction of Digital Surface Model is developed. This Digital Surface Model is applied for efficient feature extraction. More detailed extraction is possible , because 3D Digital Surface Model has both 3D shape and texture information.

Evaluation of Volumetric Texture Features for Computerized Cell Nuclei Grading

  • The extraction of important features in cancer cell image analysis is a key process in grading renal cell carcinoma. In this study, we applied three-dimensional (3D) texture feature extraction methods to cell nuclei images and evaluated the validity of them for computerized cell nuclei grading. Individual images of 2,423 cell nuclei were extracted from 80 renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). First, we applied the 3D texture mapping method to render the volume of entire tissue sections. Then, we determined the chromatin texture quantitatively by calculating 3D gray-level co-occurrence matrices (3D GLCM) and 3D run length matrices (3D GLRLM). Finally, to demonstrate the suitability of 3D texture features for grading, we performed a discriminant analysis. In addition, we conducted a principal component analysis to obtain optimized texture features. Automatic grading of cell nuclei using 3D texture features had an accuracy of 78.30%. Combining 3D textural and 3D morphological features improved the accuracy to 82.19%. As a comparative study, we also performed a stepwise feature selection. Using the 4 optimized features, we could obtain more improved accuracy of 84.32%. Three dimensional texture features have potential for use as fundamental elements in developing a new nuclear grading system with accurate diagnosis and predicting prognosis.

Facial Feature Extraction using Nasal Masks from 3D Face Image (코 형상 마스크를 이용한 3차원 얼굴 영상의 특징 추출)

  • This paper proposes a new method for facial feature extraction, and the method could be used to normalize face images for 3D face recognition. 3D images are much less sensitive than intensity images at a source of illumination, so it is possible to recognize people individually. But input face images may have variable poses such as rotating, Panning, and tilting. If these variances ire not considered, incorrect features could be extracted. And then, face recognition system result in bad matching. So it is necessary to normalize an input image in size and orientation. It is general to use geometrical facial features such as nose, eyes, and mouth in face image normalization steps. In particular, nose is the most prominent feature in 3D face image. So this paper describes a nose feature extraction method using 3D nasal masks that are similar to real nasal shape.

Feature Extraction and Classification of Multi-temporal SAR Data Using 3D Wavelet Transform (3차원 웨이블렛 변환을 이용한 다중시기 SAR 영상의 특징 추출 및 분류)

  • In this study, land-cover classification was implemented using features extracted from multi-temporal SAR data through 3D wavelet transform and the applicability of the 3D wavelet transform as a feature extraction approach was evaluated. The feature extraction stage based on 3D wavelet transform was first carried out before the classification and the extracted features were used as input for land-cover classification. For a comparison purpose, original image data without the feature extraction stage and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based features were also classified. Multi-temporal Radarsat-1 data acquired at Dangjin, Korea was used for this experiment and five land-cover classes including paddy fields, dry fields, forest, water, and built up areas were considered for classification. According to the discrimination capability analysis, the characteristics of dry field and forest were similar, so it was very difficult to distinguish these two classes. When using wavelet-based features, classification accuracy was generally improved except built-up class. Especially the improvement of accuracy for dry field and forest classes was achieved. This improvement may be attributed to the wavelet transform procedure decomposing multi-temporal data not only temporally but also spatially. This experiment result shows that 3D wavelet transform would be an effective tool for feature extraction from multi-temporal data although this procedure should be tested to other sensors or other areas through extensive experiments.

A study on hand gesture recognition using 3D hand feature (3차원 손 특징을 이용한 손 동작 인식에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper a gesture recognition system using 3D feature data is described. The system relies on a novel 3D sensor that generates a dense range mage of the scene. The main novelty of the proposed system, with respect to other 3D gesture recognition techniques, is the capability for robust recognition of complex hand postures such as those encountered in sign language alphabets. This is achieved by explicitly employing 3D hand features. Moreover, the proposed approach does not rely on colour information, and guarantees robust segmentation of the hand under various illumination conditions, and content of the scene. Several novel 3D image analysis algorithms are presented covering the complete processing chain: 3D image acquisition, arm segmentation, hand -forearm segmentation, hand pose estimation, 3D feature extraction, and gesture classification. The proposed system is tested in an application scenario involving the recognition of sign-language postures.

Development of the Computer Vision based Continuous 3-D Feature Extraction System via Laser Structured Lighting (레이저 구조광을 이용한 3차원 컴퓨터 시각 형상정보 연속 측정 시스템 개발)

  • A system to extract continuously the real 3-D geometric fearture information from 2-D image of an object, which is fed randomly via conveyor has been developed. Two sets of structured laser lightings were utilized. And the laser structured light projection image was acquired using the camera from the signal of the photo-sensor mounted on the conveyor. Camera coordinate calibration matrix was obtained, which transforms 2-D image coordinate information into 3-D world space coordinate using known 6 points. The maximum error after calibration showed 1.5 mm within the height range of 103mm. The correlation equation between the shift amount of the laser light and the height was generated. Height information estimated after correlation showed the maximum error of 0.4mm within the height range of 103mm. An interactive 3-D geometric feature extracting software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 under Windows system environment. Extracted 3-D geometric feature information was reconstructed into 3-D surface using MATLAB.

Rotation Invariant 3D Star Skeleton Feature Extraction (회전무관 3D Star Skeleton 특징 추출)

  • Human posture recognition has attracted tremendous attention in ubiquitous environment, performing arts and robot control so that, recently, many researchers in pattern recognition and computer vision are working to make efficient posture recognition system. However the most of existing studies is very sensitive to human variations such as the rotation or the translation of body. This is why the feature, which is extracted from the feature extraction part as the first step of general posture recognition system, is influenced by these variations. To alleviate these human variations and improve the posture recognition result, this paper presents 3D Star Skeleton and Principle Component Analysis (PCA) based feature extraction methods in the multi-view environment. The proposed system use the 8 projection maps, a kind of depth map, as an input data. And the projection maps are extracted from the visual hull generation process. Though these data, the system constructs 3D Star Skeleton and extracts the rotation invariant feature using PCA. In experimental result, we extract the feature from the 3D Star Skeleton and recognize the human posture using the feature. Finally we prove that the proposed method is robust to human variations.
