  • Three kind of ASE (Accelerated Solvent Extraction) and SPMDs (Semi-Permeable Membrane Devices) combined methods (ASE-SPMDs, ASE-accelerated SPMDs and SPMDs without extraction) and general Soxhlet-GPC were compared each other for the analysis of PCDD/FS in sediment. The average recovery rate of three types ASE and SPMDs combined methods (108.1%) were higher than that of the Soxhlet-GPC (79.5%) for three samples in each method using surrogate internal standards. The average coefficient of variation (10%, $2.1{\sim}25.2%$) for each congener of PCDD/Fs shows the reasonable results. Total PCDD/Fs concentrations after SPMDs without extraction were quite low, but those after ASE-SPMDs and ASE-accelerated SPMDs methods were close to the Soxhlet-GPC. Thus, the ASE-SPMDs and ASE-accelerated SPMDs methods are considered as the excellent pre-treatments method because they need less solvent and time without quality degradation.

  • To implement a generalization of value functions in Adaptive Search Element (ASE)-reinforcement learning, CMAC (Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) is integrated into ASE controller. ASE-reinforcement learning scheme is briefly studied to discuss how CMAC is integrated into ASE controller. Neighbourhood Sequential Training for CMAC is utilized to establish the look-up table and to produce discrete control outputs. In computer simulation, an ASE controller and a couple of ASE-CMAC neural network are trained to balance the inverted pendulum on a cart. The number of trials until the controllers are established and the learning performance of the controllers are evaluated to find that generalization ability of the CMAC improves the speed of the ASE-reinforcement learning enough to realize the cartpole control system.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • The properties related to the temperature and oxygen stability of the cytoplasmic hydrogenases from the fermentative strict anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium butyricum NCIB 9576 (Cl. butyricum), and purple sulfur phototrophic bacterium, Thiocapsa roseopersicina NCIB 8347 (T. roseopersicina), were compared. The optimum temperatures for the growth of Cl. butyricum and T. roseopersicina were 37$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas those for the H$_2$ evolution of the cytoplasmic hydrogenases prepared from Cl. butyricum (C-H$_2$ase) and T. roseopersicina (T-H$_2$ase) were 45$^{\circ}C$ and 65$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The T-H$_2$ase was more thermostable than the C-H$_2$ase and retained its full activity for 5 h at 50$^{\circ}C$ under anaerobic conditions and 90% of its activity at 60$^{\circ}C$, whereas the C-H$_2$ase lost its activity drastically at 50$^{\circ}C$. The optimum pHs for H$_2$ oxidation of the C-H$_2$ase and T-H$_2$ase were 9.0 and 7.5, respectively. Both enzymes showed a maximum H$_2$ evolution activity at pH 7.0. Under aerobic conditions, 80% of the T-H$_2$ase activity was retained for 10 h at 30$^{\circ}C$, and 50% of the activity remained after 6 days under the same experimental conditions. However, the C-H$_2$ase was labile to oxygen and lost its activity immediately on exposure to air. Therefore, these properties of the T-H$_2$ase are expected to be advantageous for application in in vitro biological H$_2$ production systems.

  • The maximum number of nodes in WDM self healing ring network in limited by several factors including network architecture and ASE noise due to EDFAs at each optical ADM node. In this paper, the maximum node numbers for several protection architectures and bit rates limited by ASE are calculated and compared with the number limited by wavelength numbers. Appropriate design rules can be deduced from these results.

  • We report a technique that improves the spatial resolution of optical coherence tomography (OCT) by utilizing fiber-based spectral filtering. The proposed technique improves the resolution by filtering out the erbium’s characteristic peak from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source spectrum, and reshaping the spectrum to Gaussian-like. We used a long period fiber grating (LPG) and an erbium doped fiber (EDF) absorber for the spectral filtering. An in-house made ASE source as well as a commercial ASE source [ASE-FL7002] was used as the OCT sources to study the proposed technique. The resolution of the OCT based on an in-house made ASE source is enhanced from 200 to 40 ㎛ with an LPG. While, the resolution of the OCT based on a commercial ASE source is enhanced from 25 to 19 ㎛ with the aid of an EDF absorber. However, sidelobes still exist in the interferogram due to imperfect spectral filtering, which limited the resolution. Further enhancement in the spatial resolution of the OCT system using the ASE source is possible with the aid of cascaded LPGs and/or carefully designed EDF absorber.

  • A large incoherent crosstalk (IC) caused by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise power from Tx-disabled optical network units and a differential path loss has been shown to degrade upstream transmission performance in time-division multiplexing passive optical networks. This paper considers the IC-induced power penalty of an upstream signal both in an XG-PON and in a TWDM-PON. We investigate the degradation of the extinction ratio and relative intensity noise through a simulation and experiments. For the XG-PON case, we observe a 9.6 dB difference in the level of ASE noise power from Tx-disabled ONUs (hereafter known simply as ASE noise) between our result and the ITU-T XG-PON PMD recommendation. We propose an optical filtering method to mitigate an IC-induced power penalty. In the TWDM-PON case, the IC-induced power penalty is naturally negligible because the ASE noise is filtered by a wavelength multiplexer at the optical line terminal. The results provide design guidelines for the level of ASE noise in both XG-PONs and TWDM-PONs.

  • Fermentative strict anaerobic bacterium, Clostricium butyricum NCIB 9576 (Cl. butyricum) and purple sulfur phototrophic bacterium, Thiocapsa roseopersicina NCIB 8347 (T. roseopersicina) were compared on their temperature and oxygen stabilities of cytoplasmic hydrogenases. Cell growth phase and the specific activities of evolution $H_2ase$ were related for both strains, exhibiting the highest cytoplasmic $H_2ase$ activities during the logarithmic growth phases which were 4 and 18 hrs after the incubation for Cl. butyricum and T. roseopersicina, respectively. The optimum temperatures for the growth of Cl. butyricum and T. roseopersicina were 37$^{\circ}C$ and 27$^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those for $H_2$ evolution of cytoplsmic hydrogenases prepared from Cl. butyricum ($C-H_2ase$) and T. roseopersicina ($T-H_2ase$) were 45$^{\circ}C$ and 65$^{\circ}C$, respectively. $T-H_2ase$ was more thermo-stable than $C-H_2ase$. $T-H_2ase$ retained its full activity for 5 hrs at 50$^{\circ}C$ and retained 90% of its original activity for 5 hrs at 60$^{\circ}C$, however, $C-H_2ase$ lost its activity drastically at 50$^{\circ}C$. The optimum pHs for $H_2$ oxidation of $C-H_2ase$ and $T-H_2ase$ were 9.0 and 7.5 respectively. The both enzymes showed maximum $H_2$ evolution activity at pH 7.0. Under the aerobic condition, 80% of $T-H_2ase$ activity was retained for 10 hrs at 30$^{\circ}C$, and 50% of activity was still remained after 6 days at the same experimental conditions. But the $C-H_2ase$ was labile to oxygen and lost its activity immediately after the exposure to air.

  • The purpose of this paper is to implement Web 3D environment that is not provider - oriented but client-oriented in order to provide dynamic information and to analyze knowledges by executing programs on Web pages. For these, The 3D Viewer program that parses and renders ASE files - the most general 3D Model Data file and exported text file of 3D Max Studio - is made and then converted into ActiveX 3D Viewer Component that can be used on the Web. With the purpose of managing ASE and texture file efficiently and interacting between clients and server, ActiveX Component link ASP and Database with Web Service. The 3D View Web Service can make dynamic information and cooperative works easier in Networked Virtual Reality.
