  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective switchless wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). The network efficiency is significantly increased by spatially reusing wavelengths and exploiting multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) of the AWG employed in the architecture. We have analyzed the performance of this architecture by simulating in $Optsim^{TM}$ with a control channel which exploits the broadband light source, i.e., an LED. The data was successfully transmitted to a distance of 30 km without using any EDFA's in the network, with a reasonable BER of $4.0530{\times}10^{-14}$. We have analyzed the performance of this architecture with a control channel which exploits the broadband light source, i.e., an LED, by simulating in $Optsim^{TM}$.

  • A simple water level measurement method based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is proposed and demonstrated. The measurement principle is based on the change of Fresnel reflection occurring at the end facet of the optical fiber tip (OFT). To increase the spatial resolution of water level sensing, a broadband light source (BLS) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) are employed. The OFTs are multiplexed with the dedicated wavelength channels of AWG. By measuring all of the reflection powers reflected at the OFTs with a proposed on-site reflectometer, the water level can be monitored continuously for a fast emergency response. Moreover, it can be implemented easily with the commercially available optical components and devices with the simple configuration.

  • A polymeric arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) has been proposed and demonstrated by exploiting the nanoimprint method. A PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) stamp with device patterns engraved was developed out of a master mold made of quartz glass. The device was fabricated by transferring the pattern in the PDMS stamp to a spin-coated polymer film without using any etching process. The device had 8 output channels, while the center wavelengths of each output channel were positioned from 1543.7 nm to 1548.3 nm with the spacing of 0.8 nm. The achieved average channel crosstalk and the 3-dB bandwidth were about 10 dB and 0.8 nm respectively.

  • We investigated an interrogation system for fiber Bragg gratings by using a 50-GHz 96-channel array waveguide grating. Linearity of the sensitivity (the wavelength shift in response to the change in strain or temperature) is achieved for a Bragg grating of sufficiently wide bandwidth. The present wavelength-monitoring system could measure the change in Bragg wavelength with a resolution of 0.01 nm, at intervals of 10 seconds. When this interrogation system was used for a linear array of 12 acrylaterecoated fiber gratings, the wavelength sensitivity changed from 0.018 nm/℃ to 0.01 nm/℃ when the operating temperature changed from -25℃ to 85℃.

  • The purpose of hull stress monitoring system(HSMS) is to lead hull structure to be safer at lower cost. We proposed a hull stress monitoring system for leisure boats using fiber-optic bragg grating(FBG) strain sensor. Fiber optic sensors are well suited for structure monitoring system, due to their ability to withstand harsh environments, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and reduce cabling installation cost when employing wavelength multiplexing. This paper presents an overview of current research and design of hull stress monitoring system for leisure boats.

  • There are range and azimuth direction resolution of synthetic aperture radar on the aircraft or satellite. Wide bandwidth chirp pulse generation technology is prerequisite for SAR image with fine resolution. There are two kinds of digital chirp pulse generation technology as arbitrary waveform generator(AWG) and direct digital synthesizer(DDS). In this paper, we design and implement a digital chirp pulse generator to generate 300MHz wide bandwidth linear FM chirp pulse for the fine resolution image with direct digital synthesizer. Implemented chirp pulse generator can be useful for the SAR sensors to make 50cm range resolution image.
