A Study on the Model for Determining Cultivation Quantities of the Abalone (전복 양성물량 결정모형에 관한 연구)

  • Abalone aquacultural industry has been growing rapidly in a short period of time, however, there has been just a few researches related to the forecast of the supply, demand and price. Even the models developed by these researches have problems of low compatibility and reliability. To resolve these problem, a biological supply model needs to be developed that maintains time difference and linkage among the quantity of juvenile abalone into the plots, quantity of cultivation, quantity of shipment, and at the same time juvenile abalone is transplanted into the plot, matured and shipped by the expected market price. This study focus on the development of the model for determining quantity of the abalone cultivation, which is the core part of the entire abalone demand and supply model. Key factors that affect cultivation quantity were identified and verified the causal relationship among these variables and cultivation quantity. It turned out that the quantity of juvenile abalone transplanted and the relative price(the abalone price of the place of produce divided by the brown seaweed price) have a great influence on the cultivation quantity. Also, the similarity of the variation for the cultivation quantity of the observed value and the forecasted value implies that the model developed in this study has a high compatibility.

The cultivation and characterization of imaged abalone pearls (문양화 전복진주의 양식 및 특성평가)

  • The nacre of imaged abalone pearls was obtained as a calcium carbonate of aragonite type. This result was same the nacre of natural abalone pearl. From the observation of SEM for the nacre adhered on the pearl nucleus, it was known that the layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolin were stratified. The growth rate of nacre was found to be 0.0056∼0.0074 mm/day, which is twice faster than that of traditional method used shells. The pendant and brooch were manufactured using the imaged abalone pearls.

  • The study was carried out on the artificial cultivation of the abalone mushroom, Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Miller. The pine sawdust substrates with 20% rise bran were good for mycelial growth and high quantity of P. cystidiosus in the bottle cultivation. Moreover, the proper volume for bottle cultivation was 850 ml and the removal of spawn and surface layer of the medium before pin-heading was more efficient. The yields of P. cystidiosus were higher in sawdust substrates added calcium carbonate than those not added calcium carbonate. The volume of 3 kg polypropylene bag is good for yield and biological efficiency in bag cultivation of P. cystidiosus. Cotton wastes were proper substrates for bag cultivation. In the effect of different cultivation temperature, $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ cultivation temperature was good for for primordial formation after inoculation.

Comparison of the cultivation performance between Korean (Sugwawon No. 301) and Chinese strains (Huangguan No. 1) of kelp Saccharina japonica in an aquaculture farm in Korea

  • Saccharina japonica was introduced to both Korea and China from Hokkaido, Japan, and it has become an economically important species in both nations. After a long period of cultivation, several varieties of S. japonica have been developed in Korea and China. In this study, we conducted aquacultural research on the persistence of thalli from two kelp cultivars, one from China (Huangguan No. 1) and one from Korea (Sugwawon No. 301), between December 2015 and November 2016 in Haenam, Korea. The maximum length was $247.8{\pm}13.0$ and $227.5{\pm}42.0cm$, respectively, which were significantly longer in Sugwawon No. 301 than in Huangguan No. 1. The maximum width was $29.9{\pm}5.4$ and $23.2{\pm}1.9cm$, respectively, which were significantly wider in Huangguan No. 1 than in Sugwawon No. 301. The mean biomass obtained from the culture ropes was for Sugwawon No. 301 was $3.5{\pm}0.3kg\;wet\;wt\;m^{-1}$ and for while Huangguan No. 1 was $3.1{\pm}1.0kg\;wet\;wt\;m^{-1}$ of culture rope. After August, the persistence of the thalli of Sugwawon No. 301 was two months longer than that of Huangguan No. 1. We found that the Sugwawon No. 301 performed as well as the Huangguan No. 1 in Korean waters possibly due to increased flexibility as a result of the different cell arrangements of the two cultivars. Overall, the use of the Sugwawon No. 301 cultivar rather than the Huangguan No. 1 cultivar of S. japonica appears the best alternative to help to ensure a stable year round algal feed supply for the Korean abalone industry.

Kelps in Korea: from population structure to aquaculture to potential carbon sequestration

  • Korea is one of the most advanced countries in kelp aquaculture. The brown algae, Undaria pinnatifida and Saccharina japonica are major aquaculture species and have been principally utilized for human food and abalone feed in Korea. This review discusses the diversity, population structure and genomics of kelps. In addition, we have introduced new cultivar development efforts considering climate change, and potential carbon sequestration of kelp aquaculture in Korea. U. pinnatifida showed high diversity within the natural populations but reduced genetic diversity in cultivars. However, very few studies of S. japonica have been conducted in terms of population structure. Since studies on cultivar development began in early 2000s, five U. pinnatifida and one S. japonica varieties have been registered to the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). To meet the demands for seaweed biomass in various industries, more cultivars should be developed with specific traits to meet application demands. Additionally, cultivation technologies should be diversified, such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and offshore aquaculture, to achieve environmental and economic sustainability. These kelps are anticipated to be important sources of blue carbon in Korea.

Cultivation of Laminaria japonica (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) in Udo Coast, Jeju, Korea

  • In order to produce Laminaria japonica in Jeju as feed for abalone, a transplant experiment was performed with the Baekryungdo and the Wando cultivar stocks at the Udo aquafarm from January to July 2003. Eight water conditions at the aquafarm and eleven traits of the two cultivar stocks were measured once a month. The water temperature ranged from 12.9$^{\circ}C$ to 23.5$^{\circ}C$. The salinity was 31.3-36.8‰ the DO was 5.40-9.86 mg ${\cdot}$ $l^{-1}$ the pH was 7.82-9.61. Concentrations of $NO_2-N,\;NO_3-N,\;NH_4-N\;and\;PO_4-P$ were 0.02-0.15 $\mu$M, 2.27-3.49 $\mu$M, 0.16-0.56 $\mu$M and 0.07-0.99 $\mu$M, respectively. The whole frond length of the Baekryungdo and the Wando specimens were 173.84 and 153.67 cm. The blade width, stipe length, blade length, fascia length, blade thickness, total weight and substantiality of the Baekryungdo and the Wando specimens were 14.61 and 13.05 cm, 3.94 and 3.02 cm, 169.88 and 150.65 cm, 155.81 and 137.10 cm, 1.01 and 0.96 cm, 258.04 and 200.96 cm, and 101.56 and 94.62, respectively at the conclusion of the experiment in July. The measurements of the Baekryungdo specimens were slightly higher than those of Wando specimens. The fascia width, stipe thickness and fascia thickness of the Wando specimens were slightly higher than those of the Baekryungdo specimens. The relative growth rates of these traits of two cultivar stocks during the growth test were very similar. Generally, the performance of the Baekryungdo cultivar stock seems to be better than that of the Wando samples. Further study of the physiological ecology for cultivation and breeding is needed in the future.

Studies on the Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Miller, the Abalone Mushroom (전복느타리버섯(Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K.Miller)의 형태적 및 생리적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The pileus of Pleurotus cystidiosus was attached at the side and was spatular-shape. It grew to the size of $7.6{\sim}9.8\;cm$ with dark brown color. The length of stem was $1.4{\sim}2.9\;cm$. The individual weight of fruiting-body was 25.4 g in average. This study was conducted to Investigate the physiological characteristics and to develop the artificial cultivation technique of P. cystidiosus. To find out the optimum condition of mycelial growth of P. cystidiosus, physiological conditions such as media, temperature, pH carbon sources and nitrogen sources were investigated. Various cultural media were used for the cultivation of P. cystidiosus and compost dextrose agar was favorable for mycelial growth. The optimal growing temperature and pH were in range of 25 to $30^{\circ}C$, pH $7{\sim}9$, respectively. When different carbon sources were compared, glucose was found to be best. However nitrogen sources were different with each strains. When different C/N ratio were compared, 20:1 of C/N ratio was found to be best.
