This paper presents a signal processing algorithm to control the dynamic bandwidth of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) dynamic sensor system. An accelerometer is a representative SDF sensor system. In this paper, a moire-fringe-based fiber optic accelerometer is newly used for the test of the algorithm. The accelerometer is composed of one mass, one damper and one spring as a SDF dynamic system. In order to increase the dynamic bandwidth of the accelerometer, it is needed to increase the spring constant or decrease the mass. However, there are mechanical difficulties of this adjustment. Therefore, the presented signal processing algorithm is very effective to overcome the difficulties because it is just adjustment in the signal processing software. In this paper, the novel fiber optic accelerometer is introduced shortly, and the algorithm is applied to the fiber optic accelerometer to control its natural frequency and damping ratio. Several simulations and experiments are carried out to prove the performance of the algorithm. As a result, it is shown that the presented signal processing algorithm is a good way to broaden the dynamic bandwidth of the fiber optic accelerometer.
This paper presents a study on the development of a multi-sensing inertial sensor with a single mechanical structure, which can be used both as a gyroscope and an accelerometer. The proposed MEMS gyro-accelerometer is designed to detect the angular rate and the acceleration at the same time using two separate detection circuits for one proof mass. In this study, the detection and signal processing circuit for an effective signal processing of different inertial measurements is designed, fabricated, and tested. The experimental results show that the performances of the gyro-accelerometer have resolutions of 1mg and 0.025deg/sec and nonlinearities of less than 0.5% for the accelerometer and the gyroscope, respectively, which are similar results with those of sensors with different structures and different detection circuits. The size of the sensor is reduced almost by 50% comparing with the sensors of separated proof mass.
This paper presents a novel fiber optic accelerometer system for monitoring vibration of large-size structures. The system is composed of one (or multiple) sensor head, a light control unit and a signal processing unit. The sensing mechanism of the sensor head is based on a novel integration of the moire fringe phenomenon with fiber optics to achieve a robust performance in addition to its immunity to EM interference, easy cabling, and low cost. In this paper, a prototype of the fiber optic accelerometer system has been developed successfully. A low-cost light control unit has been developed to drive the system's optic and electronic components. A unique algorithm has also been developed to derive the sensor's acceleration from the raw signals of the light control unit; it is implemented via a separate signal processing unit. Finally, the shaking table tests successfully demonstrate the performance and the potential of the moire fringe fiber optic sensor system to monitor the health of civil infrastructures.
Estimation of human motion states is important enabling technologies for realizing a pervasive computing environment. In this paper, an improved method fur estimating human motion state from accelerometer data is introduced. Our method fur estimating human motion state utilizes various statistics of accelerometer data, such as mean, standard variation, skewness, kurtosis, eccentricity, as features for classification, and therefore is expected to be more robust than other existing methods that rely on only a few simple statistics. A series of experiments fur testing the effectiveness of the proposed method has been performed, and its result is presented.

This paper proposes a single accelerometer sensor control algorithm to mobile inverted pendulum, generally called 'Segway', and evaluates the performance of this system comparing to the conventional ones. The commercialized 'Prototype Segway-PT' is initially considered as a next-generation transport vehicle. However, this robot is operated by three gyroscopes and two accelerometers to control the posture and speed, and it requires the complex signal processing for fusing the two sets of data. As the result of this, the growth rate of market size of 'Segway' is slow because of its high price mainly. In this paper, the mobile inverted pendulum is operated by a single accelerometer to simplify the control system to lower the price. Low pass filter is one of the good sensors to reducing the variation of an accelerometer, but it has time delay. This time delay disturbs real-time mobile inverted pendulum control. Like this, other various algorithms are used for this system, but each one has its own weak point. So this paper proposes a new filtering method, median filter and EKF. Median filter is used to image processing to reject impulse elements like salt and pepper noise. As the major performance evaluation parameter for the accelerometer, the high-frequency to low frequency ratio from FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is used. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithms has been verified through the real experiments and the results are demonstrated.

This paper presents the damage assessment of a building structure by using a novel optical fiber accelerometer system. Especially, a sub-scaled building model is designed and manufactured to check up the feasibility of the optical fiber accelerometer for structural health monitoring. The novel accelerometer exploits the moir$\acute{e}$ fringe optical phenomenon and two pairs of optical fibers to measure the displacement with a high accuracy, and furthermore a pendulum to convert the displacement into acceleration. A prototype of optical fiber accelerometer system has been successfully developed that consists of a sensor head, a control unit and a signal processing unit. The building model is also designed as a 4-story building with a rectangular shape of $200{\times}300$ mm of edges. Each floor is connected to the next ones by 6 steel columns which are threaded rods. Basically, a random vibration test of the building model is done with a shaker and all of acceleration data is successfully measured at the assigned points by the optical fiber accelerometer. The experiments are repeated in the undamaged state and the damaged state. The comparison of dynamic parameters including the natural frequencies and the eigenvectors is successfully carried out. Finally, the optical fiber accelerometer is proven to be prospective to evaluate dynamic characteristics of a building structure for the damage assessment.
The vibration signals of driving parts of electric train are distorted its signal patterns due to the impact components, which occurs when wheel passes rail joints. An elimination method of the impact components is investigated using adaptive signal processing technique in this study The result shows that adaptive interference canceling method seems to be more effective than line enhancement technique. The application of adaptive interference canceling method to the signal measured at bogie shows that the extractions of the signals of driving parts of traction motor, reduction gear, and axle bearing are successful. Therefore, only the signals of bogie, which is the place to attach an accelerometer easily, is sufficient for the fault diagnosis and the safety evaluation of electric train. Also, adaptive interference canceling method can be applicable to evaluate the performance of vibration isolation between bogie and car body and to investigate the characteristics of indoor sound.

Many industrial operations require continuous or nearly-continuous operation of machines, which if interrupted can result in significant financial loss. The condition monitoring of these machines has received considerable attention recent years. Rapid developments in semiconductor, computing, and communication with a remote site have led to a new generation of sensor called "smart" sensors which are capable of wireless communication with a remote site. The purpose of this research is the development of smart sensor using which can on-line perform condition monitoring. This system is addressed to detect conditions that may lead to equipment failure when it is running. Moreover it will reduce condition monitoring expense using low cost MEMS accelerometer. This sensor can receive data in real-time or periodic time from MEMS accelerometer. Furthermore, this system is capable for signal preprocessing task (High Pass Filter, Low Pass Filter and Gain Amplifier) and analog to digital converter (A/D) which is controlled by CPU. A/D converter that converts 10bit digital data is used. This sensor communicates with a remote site PC using TCP/IP protocols. Wireless LAN contain IEEE 802.11i-PSK or WPA (PSK, TKIP) encryption. Developed sensor executes performance tests for data acquisition accuracy estimations.

This paper presents the use of a novel fiber optic accelerometer system to monitor ambient vibration (both wind-induced one and vehicle-induced) of a real bridge structure. This sensor system integrates the $Moir\'{e}$ fringe phenomenon with fiber optics to achieve accurate and reliable measurements. A low-cost signal processing unit implements unique algorithms to further enhance the resolution and increase the dynamic bandwidth of the sensors. The fiber optic accelerometer has two major benefits in using this fiber optic accelerometer system for monitoring civil engineering structures. One is its immunity to electromagnetic (EM) interference making it suitable for difficult applications in such environments involving strong EM fields, electrical spark-induced explosion risks, and cabling problems, prohibiting the use of conventional electromagnetic accelerometers. The other is its ability to measure both low- and high-amplitude vibrations with a constantly high resolution without pre-setting a gain level, as usually required in a conventional accelerometer. The second benefit makes the sensor system particularly useful for real-time measurement of both ambient vibration (that is often used for structural health monitoring) and strong motion such as earthquake. Especially, the semi-strong motion and the small ambient one are successfully simulated and measured by using the new fiber optic accelerometer in the experiment of the structural health monitoring of a real bridge.
Mobile authentication/identification has grown into a priority issue nowadays because of its existing outdated mechanisms, such as PINs or passwords. In this paper, we introduce gait recognition by using a mobile accelerometer as not only effective but also as an implicit identification model. Unlike previous works, the gait recognition only performs well with a particular mobile specification (e.g., a fixed sampling rate). Our work focuses on constructing a unique adaptive mechanism that could be independently deployed with the specification of mobile devices. To do this, the impact of the sampling rate on the preprocessing steps, such as noise elimination, data segmentation, and feature extraction, is examined in depth. Moreover, the degrees of agreement between the gait features that were extracted from two different mobiles, including both the Average Error Rate (AER) and Intra-class Correlation Coefficients (ICC), are assessed to evaluate the possibility of constructing a device-independent mechanism. We achieved the classification accuracy approximately $91.33{\pm}0.67%$ for both devices, which showed that it is feasible and reliable to construct adaptive cross-device gait recognition on a mobile phone.
